New President......the Winner Is...

Who do Accy Webbers think will win the forthcoming American presidential elections?Do you give a toss?Would an Obama victory be a breath of fresh air in world/American politics?I'd certainly prefer him to a coffin dodging ex POW. with a far right, gun loving mad mother ready to step in his shoes.Loves to pull the trigger...might love to push the button.(no innuendo intended:D

I think McCain may win. Having an American presidential social on 4th nov till 6am so I'll be there for the result whatever happens.

If the Republicans pull the same cheating stunt as in the last election then they will win. That's the only possible way. If Obama is not elected, I sincerely hope that the American public are not stupid enough to believe and accept the result. It will be an utter tragedy if John McCain is elected.

We're having a late night party too for the elections. Getting all the Labour Club together for the result. Should be brilliant :D Come on Obama!

Without being seen as non PC , can anyone tell me the name of just one Black person who has reached the Presidency/Prime Ministership of his/her country and made a success of it , I think sub-saharan Africa has about 30 or so countries and every one is a shambles and a killing field , Oh and lets not forget the country with the longest history of 'Black' independance, Haiti ......anyone want to go visit ? ....thought not . How about all the countries in the Carribean ? all havens for corruption and drug dealing .

Can anyone name one city in the US which is thriving thru having 'Black' leadership ?
Mayor Nagin and his city council made a really good job of leadership in New Orleans during Katrina , Marion Berry the Mayor of Washington DC is someone who I'm sure you would want your daughters to know , that is unless you have objections to drug use, firearms and under-age sex .

replies on a postcard ......... ;) ;)

God help us if you think America is free of firearms, drug use and under age sex under Bush. Lots of leaders make mistakes and have bad beliefs, regardless of their colour. I think it would be quite naive to say that every black person in the world must be incapable of leadership.

It's got ****** all to do with skin colour at this stage. Obama is the only person who can pull together a team of people to lead America properly. Obama has no interest in the tabloid politics that have come to surface with the Bush administrations and people recognise that clarity and honesty.

Don't fret even if Obama does become president, and all the blacks in America start ranting on about the brothers rule etc, there are enough die hard rednecks over there, to see him go the same way as Kennedy.

Crimes are committed by every race of person as well. And I am aware of more crimes committed by white people than black people in America. Perhaps I am a little misled by the media but the only black person that comes to mind when I think of American crimes is the obvious... OJ.

Dare I point out that many American criminologists are quick on the mark to point out there are over 3 times the number of white American serial killers in comparison to black american figures?

All you need to do is google American crime figures and many websites point to the statistics.

Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, Berkowitz, Albert Fish....

Oh yes, and let's not forget George W. Bush himself...

Ah I pushed it a little too far. Though then I get onto high school shootings and we have a field day; Asa Coon, Brenda Ann Spencer, Luke Woodham, Andrew Golden and Mitchell Johnson, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.... have I said enough yet?

Racist stereotypes exist and I might not be able to change every single persons mind on them, but let's not ignore how many brutal and socially destructive crimes are carried out by your white citizens.

Not quite sure what you mean by"my white citizens" I've only got the one and she was quite dark when she was born.Picked up now though.
Perhaps you could look up all the knife related stats. in London and let us all know the outcome.
I'm not anti colour - race - or - religion. But I am anti killing people or causing grief or harm to them. I'm quite tender really

blazey , check the link Homicides in Oakland 2007/2008 for my local area , I live about 4 miles to the south of this , to date October 25, 2008 , 110 dead , but you can be sure for every death there were at least another 10 maimed and wounded and we haven't got to the holiday season yet .
A link is available from the above showing the deaths across the bridge in San Francisco , the locations in both places where all these " socially destructive crimes" take place are areas where "white citizens" DON'T live.

True. And in the case of Africa, we have to take into account the legacy of colonialism. If one wants to find the root of the problems in, say, the Congo, one should read the history of the brutality of Belgian colonialism. Or Conrad's "Heart of Darkness."

Colour shouldn't make one jot of difference to how a person can do the job, just as gender shouldn't.

The only problem will be that the person will have to prove themself more worthy, because of biggots.

steel jack - not being funny - but oakland is a world famous black people's ghetto - if blacks werent the only ones commiting crimes there i'd be worried!

for any that arent aware gangster rapstars like to wear oakland as a badge of honour that they survived that area or they come from there eg tupac and the game.

yeah no one's sayin blacks are saints or sinners but its the person within not the skin color that determines what crimes they'll commit.

but as a black police officer said blacks will have to work twice harder to prove themselves

They keep coming up with new fangled ideas for polling day, especially n the States, but to me what's wrong with putting your cross in a box next to your candidate of choice, its stood the test of time, there is no need to use machines that punch holes in cards (aka USA 2000), all you need is some one with half a brain to count the votes correctly;)

Re: New President......the Winner Is...

The last time I really cared who became U S president is precisely 48 years ago. I knew zilch about American politics but I saw a debate on TV between Richard Nixon and a young Senator called Jack Kennedy. Charisma just oozed from the handsome Kennedy and I fell, ever so slightly, in love with him (bear in mind I was only 17). What's more, from that evening on, I knew he was going to win. There was a magic about him that I haven't seen since, and the Democrat banner he was representing was right for its time, with the equal rights question coming to the fore across the States.

Now, the equality that Kennedy endorsed may well have paid off. Obama looks like he has a good chance of being elected. If he wins, I wish him well but I fear for him too. They killed Jack Kennedy for, among other reforms, advancing the cause of the black American. The same factions are going to be gunning for a black president and, despite all the security, they'll find a way.

Sadly you're not the only person to make that prediction.

It seems beyond ironic that the country that sees itself as the most democratic of nations, and has set itself up as the one to police our planet, by going to war against it's 'baddies' to fight for freedom, is on the eve of electing a President who many think will be assasinated because of the colour of his skin.

If I was voting it would be for Obama.

Of the two I think he'll make a better President, and I hope he is allowed to serve his full term.

His colour will make no difference to how he'll do the job, prejudice might though.

My only hope is that whoever takes office has some common sense and understanding and can do a better job than the guy who is leaving Pennsylvania Avenue. After watching Panorama tonight and some of the stats that were put accross in that programme, ( Afghanistan ) I hope whoever takes over from "dubbya" has both common sense and the steel to get such issues resolved. ( i.e. Iran, North Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan; and in an ever more emerging light, the Russians)

After all, where the Yanks go we will follow. Thay are and undoubtedly will continue to be, looked upon as the "policemen" of the modern world. Indesputably, we still owe the good old U.S. of A. a great deal from when they jumped on board in the last two world wars. But one fact remains. A war, (in whatever it's auspice) cannot be fought and won on two fronts. For proof of that read throughout history.

There are times when common sense and diplomacy will work and there are times when inevitably conflict will determine an outcome to difficult situations. Whoever get's the job for Uncle Sam, I just hope they can use a bit of common and try and resolve things without unnecessary bloodshed.

Here goes..

Each state has a number of electoral college votes, depending on how big the states population is. For example Florida has 27 votes, and Idaho 4. In most states getting the majority vote from the people, means you take all the states electoral college votes.

Then the one who gets to 270 wins the presidency.

An ATM machine can count notes and the post office equipment can sort out letters with different postcodes so surely the boffins could produce a vote counting machine? Er! Not one that relies on chads and all its variations that were argued about last time.

According to a BBC Jeremy Vine just purely for fun phone poll, 80% of those who felt like wasting 15p voted for Obama. Meaning that only 20% voted for McCain.

I suppose that also means that shares in oven chips now hits rock bottom.

Well they're divided up into states depending on population. The candidate who gets most votes in the state takes the electoral college votes.

Thankfully I didn't have to explain the primaries which are even more complex! :p

It's not the election that is the problem ... it's the entrenched racism in many parts of America, particularly in the trailer park trash South, and in much of the Bible Belt ... Obama seems to have made it to election day, but, if elected, keeping him alive will be a security nightmare.

The 50 states (plus the District of Columbia) have a certain umber of delegates tot he Electoral college each. The number of delegates is the number of senators each state has + the number of representatives (to the House of Representatives). Each State returns 2 Senators to the Senate (which is the upper house of Congress), the number of representatives is determinded by the population of the state.

California has 55 votes in the Electoral college (this is the most votes of any state), but Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Vermont, Delware and District of Columbia all have only 3 votes each.

All the states, apart from Maine and Nebraska, operate a 'winner takes all' giving the entire allocation of delegates to whoever wins the popular vote in the state.
There are a total of 538 Electoral votes, so whoever gets 270 votes has won.

(I read all about the Electoral College system in this weeks Sunday Independent, so if anyone disagrees with what I wrote I am only quoting the figures from there)

It's a wrap ... and now the fun begins .... even those who don't support Obama must be glad to see the end of GWB. And even tho' he didn't win, John McCain, after serving his country for over 50 years, proved, in his concession speech, that he is a class act.

This victory is one that I never thought that I would see in my lifetime. When I was born, they were still lynching blacks in Mississippi.

I've been getting some jokes too. I don't know if it is a feature of human creativity, or just that we are a bunch of sickos. I can well remember that the burning wreckage of the space shuttle had barely reached the ground before people were "joking" that NASA stood for "need another seven astronauts.

I did check out some of the white supremacist web sites, and there is stuff on them that is real scary. And these guys are not joking.

How do you know that you are more British than I will ever be? That is a pretty sweeping statement to make without knowing me.

Also why do you not think I have never been out of Clayton?

I have accepted the Queens Shilling, I have paid my dues and demands. I choose to live in Spain...which is my right.
I am born and bread in England....which is recorded.
If you have been out of Clayton really is of no concern but don't think for one minute that I would pledge my allegence to any other country but my own....you would be sadly mistaken.

I don't have any problem with wherever you choose to live, as you say it is your right and I have never implied that you have pledged your alliegence to any other country.

However, as you have now chosen to reside in Spain (which you have infered in previous posts is a much better place to live than UK), I presume you are now paying your dues and demands to the Spainish government.

As someone who is still paying both Income Tax and Council Tax in the UK (and have done so for over 40 years) I feel that I am more qualified than you to make comments about the affairs of the UK, as you are no longer resident in the UK.

By the way, has your wife had any trouble with her bank recently.

Garinda tactics

(Military term.)
- (a) The use of all available ammunition, which results in an easy victory.
Org. unknown, but first used in dispatches from Balkan Campaign, 1915

- (b) Warfare of using all available sources at one’s disposal.

Well as it was a public forum, it isn't a little secret. Just reminding you that even in that posting, (when the majority of other people who posted were attempting to give your wife advice about the problem - and which would probably have resulted in the fee being waived), you knew it all.

I have to admit it, my family were immigrants, it seems that my ancestor followed the family tradition of nepotism and came over with cousin billy in 1066 to teach Saxon pretender Harold a lesson or two.

The majority of other people as you call them, including you gave advise which, was either irrelevant, out of context or down right stupid.
The matter was resolved and the fee was waived by my endeavours not by any of the suggestions or advice from my so called peers.

The full facts, as I recall, about your wife, were stated by yourself - in fact it was the reason why you started that particular thread. I know that several people suggested to you that if you contacted the bank concerned they would probably waive the fee. I also remember you being advised to apply for an overdraft facility to make sure the problem did not happen again, but you said you were not prepared to pay a monthly fee for that, despite being politely informed (by several people) that the bank in question does not charge a monthly fee for an overdraft and only charges debit interest for the days that you use the facility.

From reading your posts over the years, I can only conclude that unless everyone agrees with you, you always insult them. My posting about annexing Spain was posted as a jest but you you do not appear to have a sense of humour.

Er...okay, if you insist. Though it is all there in the thread.

I made a joke that I was descended from this island's first primeval swamp slime, and therefore 'very British'.

Jambutty joked that not much had changed.

I replied that some change has happened, and that some have evolved a backbone, making reference to the evolution of the species, i.e. the move from water to land, whilst others remain as a more primitive life force.

A double entendre could also be hinted at, with backbone and spineless meaning courage and moral cowardice.

I'm sure everyone else understood, but if there's anything else you need clarified please feel free to pm me for a full and very unfunny explanation.:)
