poppie day
ROYAL staff are furious over an amazing ban on poppies at full state banquets at Buckingham Palace.
Flunkies were ordered not to wear the flower in remembrance of Britain’s war dead at a bash for foreign diplomats. Some claim Foreign Office officials warned they could be FIRED if they did. Staff said they were told the poignant symbol might offend ambassadors at last Thursday’s dinner — hosted by the Queen. Even police were told to leave their poppies at home for the annual event, attended by more than 300 guests. One household source claimed the Foreign Office gave the order. He said: “They told the Palace that wearing poppies could offend the ambassadors, which is farcical. “And as the Foreign Office are in charge, we have to listen. “Staff are disgusted. It’s a total insult to our veterans and soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.” Several household staff are threatening a revolt over the ban. The source added: “The Royals are huge supporters of the Poppy Appeal and there is a big box of poppies in the staff room for us to wear. “I’m sure the Duke of Edinburgh or Prince Harry would have been furious at this.” Thursday’s bash was for new ambassadors and high commissioners working in London. A Palace spokesman said poppies were ruled out by protocol. He said: “Historically you do not wear poppies with full state ceremonial evening dress.” |

A story made up of no apparent facts and appears in the sun newspaper.

Re: poppie day
The facts are that Palace staff weren't allowed to wear poppies, for fear of offending the Ambassadors at this function.
Disgraceful. |

Re: poppie day
I thought and was told by parents etc, that two world wars were fought so that we could have freedom and the right to make our own decisions.
Seems we were told another lie and we are still under a dictatorship. |
Re: poppie day
Rather funny that this topic cropped up. I was waiting in my car for the wife ho was in the supermarket. Feeling a bit bored I decided to have a little compeition with myself. I would count all the people wearing a Poppy and see how many the total would be by the time my wife arrived .Twenty minutes later out she came and my total of Poppies was ONE. I was utterly disgusted.Have we all fogotten our heroes already?

Re: poppie day
If all you pro royals ever needed an excuse to change your mind and opting to dump the royalty then this incident has to be it.
I had very little respect for them anyway but what there was has gone. I read on Ceefax or maybe it was on Teletext today that some supermarkets are banishing the poppy collectors to the car park rather than just inside the building entrance. Fortunately Asda at Grimshaw Park is not one of them. Also on the letters pages was a letter questioning why the servicemen/women past and present were at the back of the queue of those laying wreaths and paying their respects to fallen comrades. They should be the first. |

Re: poppie day
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old.Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. I learned these words at school and now when I am old I will not forget them

My own tribute to my dad at http://uk.geocities.com/[email protected]/last.html
The Last Post is played by Steven Fletcher (Ex Royal Artillery Band) My poppy field back garden is also a tribute to all who have fallen so that I could make this post. Sadly most poppies have flowered and died off but this morning there were still a handful in flower. |
Re: poppie day
It saddens me so much that such a decision can even be thought up let alone made in our country.
We are supposed to be proud of our country, our servivemen/ women, and our fallen heroes. With exception to the first I am very proud of everything our armed forces give for us. Our fallen have died for thier country but yet thier country cannot it seems be proud to carry thier memory on thier shoulders in fear of offending others. Its high time this country and its so called officials gained the bottle to stand up for what is right. Lord knows they are good at sending our kids out there to do just that on thier behalf. |
Re: poppie day
I don’t know if anyone else has noticed but the focus on WWI is always on Europe.
Very little is being mentioned about the 2nd front in the Middle East. Gallipolis for example and North Africa vis-a-vi Lawrence of Arabia. |
Re: poppie day
I was on my way to be taken home by ambulance this morning at 11am, there were notices al over the hospital asking people to observe a two minutes silence at 11am. It surprised me just how many people ignored the request, even though people were stood along the coridoors observing the silence.:(

It wasn’t all that long ago when buses, cars, taxis, lorries all stopped at 11:00am as did pedestrians to observe the two minutes silence. Surely it isn’t asking very much to give up just TWO MINUTES out of 525,600 once a year? Millions gave up much, much more. |
Re: poppie day
I was in Ossy Mills where the "Two minute's silence" was observed by nearly everyone, but the majority of us were over-fifty.

Re: poppie day
I attended the service at the war memorial in Victoria Park today ... quite a moving experience with several wounded vets of the Afghan war on hand to make us realize the sacrifices that Canadian men and women are making.
Just as an aside, on the back of the Canadian $10.00 bill is printed a portion of the poem "In Flanders Fields" by Lt-Col. John McCrae M.D. (1872-1918), Canadian Corps. |

Re: poppie day
as a kid i remember my Dad telling me what a sacrifice had been made by both men and women in both wars, even though he thought war was futile he respected the fact that these people had gone to fight for us, and many lives had been lost when he explained some of the terrible things that had gone on, my respect grew for what had been done for the following generations,i feel all this as been removed maybe made less personal for todays youth its been shelved as just history, because for the life of me how can anybody have done beaten anybody let alone an old soldier ,i making ref to Mr Schofield the gentleman who was attack on rememberance sunday:mad:

A few weeks earlier, there was a similar program where a crim had been boxed in under a railway bridge, so he reversed hard at a motorbike copper knocking him off and wedging him between his bike and a bridge support. I think his penalty was stiffer- a year or so, plus a multi-year ban, but it was still a bit farty when you compare it with the penalty for the American driver on the same program who did the same thing. They all pulled their guns out and shot him to death. |
