Don't get a cat just to kill mice. If you don't like cats it's hardly fair on the poor creature to have it in your home. Those who've never had much to do with cats think they are not affectionate but that's nonsense, being owned by a cat can be very rewarding. Never take on any animal unless you can love it. :)

Im not all that bothered about cats, wouldnt say I dont like them, would rather feed a cat than a mouse :D

Re: Catching Mice

Cats can live 15 - 20 years and are expensive to feed, need yearly injections against cat flu and regular doses of flea repeller.
It is by far more economic to invest in a pest repeller.

In that case, Emzy, you might be pleasantly surprised at what a good and loving pet a cat can be. Trouble is, if you get a kitten, you've a 6 month wait before it's grown-up enough to catch mice. The Cats' Protection League (if you have a branch close to you) always has adult cats that need a good home, as does the RSPCA, but if you have a puppy you'd have to be assured the cat gets along with dogs - some do, some don't, it depends if they're used to them.

Whatever you decide, I do hope you get the mouse problem resolved soon. The hygiene issue must be very worrying for you with small children around and I know, from experience, how difficult it is to get rid of the little burgers.

I'm not really a cat person, dogs are more my cup of tea, but back in the late 70 when I lived in Hassy I had mice in my cottage, the cat who lived at the Coach and Horses had had kittens so I got one, never saw another mouse or any sign of one again

If you get a cat competent enough to solve your rodent problem (many aren't) remember that once the supply at home dries up, it will want to go outside and bring in birds and field rodents.

To be quite honest S25, I think when mice get the scent of a cat they exit stage left, when I got mine never even saw another dead or alive

I notice that this repeller is less than half price today at £19.18 P&P free
Pest-Stop 2000 (ultrasonic/electromagnetic repeller): Amazon.co.uk: Garden & Outdoors

It is identical to the one I have - sends a pulse around the wiring and emits ultrasound

Being in the countryside I get invaded by field mice. Don't mind them in the garage/workshop but the house is a no-go area. I tried humane traps, took them half a mile away but still plenty of replacements. I resorted to poisoned bait - no more mice in house, no more ruined bedding or spoilt food. Might not be a nice way of doing it but an effective one.

I had environmental health out who left little dishes of poison for them last year, after a few weeks it did seem to have worked but now they are back. My problem is now, being 12 months down the line my kids can now reach and open the cupboard doors where the poison was left for them so dont really want to go down that road again because i dont want the little ones getting their inquisitive little hands on it. They know that whats put down is "chemicals" and not to touch but being the age that they are at I dont really want to take the risk. They (the mice not the kids) have chewed at the edge of my carpets in places which is really annoying as the carpets arnt that old. I have plug ins but they dont seem to be keeping them away, I can still hear them and know that they are still there.

If you have the cheaper plug ins that emit sound only, you only prevent them from moving into that 'beam of sound'. If the plug is situated behind furniture, the sound is just bouncing around in the small area behind that furniture.
The plug in that I use (see link) makes the electrical wiring of the ring circuit pulsate with a pitch that cannot be tolerated by them in every room where that wiring goes

I understand your problem - mine is an inquisitive little dog who regards anything on the floor as hers. I managed to find places where I could safely put it (safe for the dog that is). Try and determine where the mice could be entering, cable, pipe entries, and then if there are holes pour the bait down there, or put it in a corner with some heavy furniture in front of the bait dish. Best of luck.

How does that work exactly:confused:
Does it have to be 'crunchy' in order that they die of constipation?

Re: Catching Mice

I have three cats and a JRT ..... and no mice.

Here's a little story about pest control: A friend of mine discovered a skunk in his basement ... he had left open the basement door. Knowing what would happen if he scared the animal, he went upstairs and phoned animal control and told them he had a skunk in his basement. The laid off hamburger flipper at animal control told him to put pieces of bread on the basement steps, and let the skunk eat its way outside. He put the bread on the steps. A short while later, he phoned animal control to let them know that he now had three skunk in his basement.
