Catching Mice

After requesting and kindly beain loaned a mouse trap i set the trap, with a bit of caramel keg as the bait (how lucky was that mouse!!!) went up 15 minutes later to find an empty trap.........no mouse and no chocolate, how unimpressed am I!!!!

I have tried again, with chocolate spead this time, hopefully I will be more successfull!!!

Any other suggestions??

emzy 16-11-2008 16:59

Re: Catching Mice

erm..........yes I had, well I think i had, it seemed to work that way, the trap had gone off but there was no mouse

magpie 16-11-2008 17:11

Re: Catching Mice

they like peanut butter.... I have one of them plug in thingys and I have never seen any mice ( so I think they must work ) because I live near to woods and fields...

panther 16-11-2008 17:20

Re: Catching Mice

agree with magpie..they do like peanut butter, and they wont be able to nick it cuz it sticks to the trap so they have to really get on it to eat it:D

I was tempted!! But its dark in their, it was in my airing cupboard thingie in the boys room so not sure if theyd see it and take the hint but have blocked the hole up where they were getting out of the airing cupboard. Cant beleive the size of hole they can get through, it was where the cupboard had been cut round the skirting and the gap was no wider than 1cm

Bunging their holes up will stop them breading,But you've got to catch them first.:hehetable

A mouse can dislocate its joints and squeeze through a hole as tiny as could be made with a ballpoint pen.
Wipe worktops too - they can climb up vertical surfaces

To be honest I havent yet, but saying that, wouldnt move anything out of the cupboard til I knew the coast was clear

I know they have been moving about under the floorboards though, have heard them recently

West Ender 16-11-2008 20:56

Re: Catching Mice

The trouble is they breed very fast and just 1 pregnant mouse can mean you have dozens within weeks. Traps will deal with the ones that venture near them but they may not deal with the whole problem. It might be worth getting your council's Environmental Health dept. in to clear them all out.

MargaretR 16-11-2008 21:04

Re: Catching Mice

The council will lay down poison bait which isn't good news where there are toddlers about.
I recommend a plug in repeller. If you have a 2 storey house you are likely to have 2 electric ring mains, so will need one plugged in on each floor.

Councils are not stupid. If they lay down poison it will be under floorboards, behind skirting boards and in inaccessible places. Do you really think they would risk being prosecuted for causing death by poisoning?

I had to get the local council in when we had an infestation, 30 years ago. I had a toddler and 2 older children and there was no way they could have accessed the bait. The infestation was cleared within 2 weeks.

Might give the council a call

Will see in the morning if I have another, dont wanna disturb the boys now just to check

Might have just had the one, but if i have had one there is nothing to stop more turning up so poison may be the way to go, im not dabbling in that though, will leave it to the professionals.

Do the council charge you for it?

Re: Catching Mice

Our only mouse problem to date was caused by our cat. He hadn't killed it when he brought it in. He put it down on the kitchen floor then mewed at me expecting a fuss, and the little bu**er just looked up at him then took off under the cooker! The other two cats were useless. One is scared of mice, and the other one has a built-in satellite delay.

Anyway - everyone knows there's only one way to catch mice. Buy a supply of hotdogs and chocolate muffins. At 9am leave one hotdog and one chocolate muffin on a little plate at the hole. Do nothing until 10am the following day, then leave one hotdog and one chocolate muffin on a little plate at the hole. Do nothing until 11am the following day, then leave one hotdog and one chocolate muffin on a little plate at the hole. Do nothing until 12pm the following day, then leave one hotdog and one chocolate muffin on a little plate at the hole. Do nothing until 1pm the following day, then leave one hotdog and one chocolate muffin on a little plate at the hole. Do nothing until 2pm the following day, then leave one hotdog on a little plate at the hole. When the mouse sticks its head out looking for the muffin, smack it with a frying pan.

Just been moving a few things round in bedroom and throwing hoover round and found 2 places where is has been at my carpet, one just outside my cupboard and one just inside, then the little erm yes erm monster went for me, I jumped back and tried to close the door to prevent it from escaping but it was just too strong for me and managed to get out before i could shut it, it then hid behind my wardrobe for a moment, took one look at me (beleive me, me in the mornings isnt great!) and ran away towards the cupboard. Dont quite know where it went from there but it aint gonna be staying long!!!

Spot on ... good to see you sorting it Emzy.

Knew that mice were not good for your Health, and after googling made me feel sicker ...Yuk ! Will not enter details, but just the thought of them urinating and pooping on yer food is one of them, and the diseases they carry ! Don't want any of them near your lovely twins.

They may look cute, but are a real danger to health and electrics in your house, so hope you are cleared of these nasty critters soon .. x

When I had them 18 months ago, the guy from EH came for four weeks before I got rid of them, I still have some in a few out of the way places but nothing has touched it since, its a case of being patient

I remember when i had them, the little gits running round leaving droppings (I thought rabbits poo alot, but they take the biscuit), scratching at night under the floorboards....oh it was horrible, i couldnt sleep knowing they were around, then like i said earlier in a post i got pest magic...took about a week to get rid, because the noise was driving em crazy..you could hear them lol. Havent had any since and its been years....they go next door now lol:D

Am gonna try and save up and get some of them plug in things, they are driving me mad and yes it is also keeping me awake at night hearing them gnawing away at night, i hate it. Quite a bit of the poison has gone but think when the chappie from EH comes back might see if he can stick some poison downstairs after seeing one in the living room now. Cant wait til I am rid of them, think I will be celebrating!!
