Do you still have manners
Was reading an article the other day which said that people in this country no longer have manners, no one says please and thank you any more. Well I would think that's an insult to many people, especially the older end. I for one have always said please and thank you, because that how I was brought up, and I haven't changed. Irrespective of who I am dealing with its the right thing to do, especially now that I have to rely so much on other people, so I'm only to grateful for any one's help. Doesn't mater to me whether its my close family or mates who give up their time just to spend the odd hour to say hello mate how are you, I always say thanks for coming. Do you think we have lost our manners or not?

Re: Do you still have manners
I certainly haven't like you I was brought up to be polite and I still am. I drummed it into my kids and my grandchildren have none since they were babies that if they don't use the "magic" word they don't get. Having said that I do think society in general has let their manners slip and it is a shame, it costs nothing to be polite.

Re: Do you still have manners
My 17-year-old stepson has had a bubble wrapped upbringing because of two, life-changing, quite harrowing events (for a child). However, it means historically, he's always been given what he wants, so now he never says "please" or "thank you" (among his other problems). He doesn't ask for anything from me, because he knows he won't get unless he makes the effort.
It's second nature with my nine-year-old, though. He realises what he's done immediately if he has one of his very occasional lapses... |
Re: Do you still have manners
Bad manners, especially not saying please and thank you, drives me mad.
I may be guilty of bad manners myself when I see it, as very often, when being served in a shop for example, and the amount required is just stated, and any change is given without any form of social nicety passing the person's lips, I very often ask them why I don't deserve a please or thank you. It crosses all age barriers. I watch Eggheads on television, and the host, at the moment Jeremy Vine, asks the contestants if they's like to go first or second. About half of the people asked reply with a brusque 'first/second', to the accompaniment of my shouts of 'please!' |

I remember my daughter coming running in one day when she was about five shouting Ice cream Ice cream. Her mother said what's the magic word.
She thought for a while and then said. Abracadabra! Still laugh at that one.:hehetable |

I know that there are times when I get some funny looks when I say please when asking for something and then thank you after receiving it. Excuse me is another phrase that seems to have gone AWOL. People just push past you these days – even some of the older generation. |

Manners Cost Nothing.

Re: Do you still have manners
Yes, basically I have.
However I find that there is an increasing number of people from all generations that can be considered ill mannered. The young people that have been dragged up to know, no better, fortunately most aren't of that ilk, (thank you, parents with standards). The women of any age that sneer at you rather than say thank you because you held a door open, (strange that one, I also hold doors open for men of all ages and usually get thanked). The older generation, that think because they have managed to reach that age they can demand people to be courteous, while they push the same folk to one side. We all can and should be a little better mannered, it's when we all give up and act like the worst examples instead of attempting to maintain standards that things will go completely wrong. http://planetsmilies.net/xmas-smiley-4622.gif |

Re: Do you still have manners
I know the risks of making sweeping generalizations; however, I will say that, in general, Canadians are a well-mannered bunch ... particularly outside of the GTA, which, like all large cities is a little cold and unfriendly. Maybe it has to do with the "small town" atmosphere which informs our society. Sometimes the politeness seems to go a little overboard into formality, but it is still there. There are areas of Canada, particularly the Maritime provinces and the Prairie provinces which are renowned for having a large number of just downright really nice, polite and helpful folks.
There are aspects of this politeness that annoy me a little; one is, "have a nice day." I sometimes respond with "no thanks, I've made other plans." None take this the wrong way, and it sometimes raises a slight giggle or two. |

I know that the foreign media will, as usual, ignore news from here .... but the crisis shows that we are anything but boring in the Great White North. Polite, yes, but never as boring as some think we are. |

Please can we stop banging our heads on the wall in regard to expecting manners from the mannerless? Thank you! :D

Re: Do you still have manners
My daughter gets a lift to school every day and the husband and wife who share this duty told me just the other week that she never fails to say thank you and is entertaining and polite , more so than her peers. That makes me very proud, I feel it's a job well done, and I appreciate good manners in others too, I hold doors open for others and offer my seat on public transport, must be an upbringing thang!
I have now started to ignore customers who spend the transaction talking on their mobile, I just stand there, mute, until they raise their eyebrows and wonder what's taking so long....... " Hang up you ignoramus" |

Re: Do you still have manners
On the rare occasions I have bought from a shop this year, I did notice that the assistant looked surprised when I said 'please' and 'thank you'.
The result was a warm smile - manners are appreciated |

I would stick around and give some more fine examples of Canadian courtesy; but the news is coming on, and I have to go see if we still have a government. If that's ok with you guys:D

Re: Do you still have manners
I can't abide bad manners. If I, for example, hold a door open for someone who does not say, "Thank you", I will say it for them, loudly, as they sail past me - just as you would to a small child when teaching it to be polite.
I expect people to be polite to me as I would not dream of being anything else to others. I was brought up that way, I brought up my children that way and they have brought up their own children similarly. Sadly, we now live in a selfish world where manners are thought of as unnecessary but there is still politeness around, even among the very young. It's so refreshing when you come across it. |

Re: Do you still have manners
some shop assistants could do with a manners lesson, was at the till in Tesco monday dinner, n asked the girl nicely could i have some bags please, the uppity cow, then proceeded into a what i can only describe as n tirade, saying we are not allowed to put them on the counter, its to encourage re-cycling, fair enough, but it was the manner she said it in.:( i replied ok fair enough, now you can either give me the bags,or put that lot back on the shelves n i will go to asda! never seen a puss as scarlet so quickly, i got the bags.;) good manners cost nowt its that simple.

Re: Do you still have manners
I'm a stickler for manners and have tried to instill good manners in my children. I don't think I've done a bad job as others who have looked after them have commented on their good manners.
Children learn from their parents and if they are not taught manners at home they won't have any. If they are barked at and shouted at then they will do the same to others. |

Well, I guess we still have a govt. of sorts for now ... see what happens when the PM very politely;) addresses the nation at 7 tonite .... but what an ill-mannered bunch politicians are when one side is fighting for power, and the other, political survival. One of the problems with Canadian politicians is that they give us bs and bad manners in two official languages.:D

Re: Do you still have manners
Feel I am reluctant to agree with you on this one Jaysay. Ever since our last thread on this subject, I have taken particular notice of people's manners and can honestly say have never been treated rudely by the general public whilst out and about.
No-one has failed to thank me for holding the door open, and all have apologised if bumped into me by accident. Even a slight collision of supermarket trolleys has invited an "Oops Sorry" even when it was obviously my fault. I will continue, however, to carry on 'bad manner spotting' and duly submit my report... :D |

My mum was once a contestant on Countdown back in the day when it was hosted by Richard Whiteley. In all the bumph she was sent prior to filming there was a list of dos and don'ts.......don't wear this, don't say that etc. One of the points was 'When playing the letters game please do not say please and thankyou after every letter. Just once or twice is sufficient.' |

Re: Do you still have manners
Yes I do still have manners, My mother always taught me it cost nothing to have manners. :)
My own children always say please and thankyou(although on some occasions its "cheers mate " from the lads) Our 5 yr old grandson always says please and thankyou and knows he wont get without manners. But as already said manners are taught from elders so if a child dosent have them theres only the elders to blame. On the other hand school should also teach them I get so angry when i come across people that dont have manners, Its rude and totally uncalled for:mad: |
Re: Do you still have manners
My son, (must be different to the secret grand- lovechild Cherokees on about cos he's 4 ;)) has been brought up to say please and thank you. We are working on excuse me at the mo. He does sometimes get over excited and forgets, but a quick prompt brings the correct response. His first words (and I;m sure hes not the only one), were ma, da, and ta, so I'm not sure its right targetting the younger generation for the lapse.
I actually find the older generation worse than anyone for lacking manners. Its hard to teach a child the social niceties when you open doors for older people and they just barge through without a word. I dont know if older people are reluctant to respond through fear of engaging with someone or whatever. My pet hate is when driving around, and if you let someone out, they dont raise their hand to say thanks, again the main culprits are older drivers. Winds me up badly, and I'm often tempted to give my own hand gesture just to remind them ;) |
Re: Do you still have manners
E-on called on Thursday ... was out and he left a card to say would be returning Friday afternoon.
E-on, of course, read Gas and Electricity (if you have both with them) ... but the reader had put on the card 'Electricity please'. Thought this was quite sweet ... missed him again though on the Friday. |
