Though I do recall hearing a lot of grumbling about that council's performance. My comments aren't aimed at any one political party, but the caliber of people who become councillors, and not just here in Hyndburn. I stand by my comment that you do find people with very little economic or business experience, suddenly in charge of very large budgets, and making very important and long ranging decisions about an area's future. The people who carry out the policies of any council, the finance department, planning etc., are expected to have the relevant qualifications and experience to do those jobs. It just seems odd that the people actually pulling the strings might not have the ability to run a church Tombola, that I gave earlier as an example. This is an observation that I've come to after having lived in four differing boroughs, irrespective of which party was in power. |

JJB have called in administrators for their fashion stores, Qube and Original Shoe Company, although the sports outlets are still afloat. (just)

Re: Recession List 2009!!
Time for an update. Diamonds and Pearls now in administration so shop closed.
The furniture/homeware/bits of allsorts shop in the Chruch st arcade also has closing down signs in the window. Difficult to know how many of those shops are actually one business in there but I would guess it's about 75% of the occupancy ? |

The ex catalogue shop seems to use a lot of the units in there, its been a while since i went through though |

It's the shop opposite, selling catalogue seconds, which uses all the other shops in the Arcade as storage. It used to be really busy when it sold bits 'n' bobs, but you never see anyone in much now, since they've concentrated on sofas etc. |

I was told today that Buy-the-House has closed it's sales offices on Little Blackburn Road, in Accrington.
Bye bye the house, despite as rather odd article in this weekend's Observer, trying to assure us the local housing market is in recovery. |

A past when industrialists built a factory, and all housing for it's workers...and one shop, which charged what it liked, because there was no competition. Work was done, wages paid, then went straight back to the factory owner, via the till of the lone shop. |

I'm not opposed to out of town hyper-markets, just when they're sited within spitting distance of small businesses, who can't compete on price, because of the size, and therefore buying power, of the new superstores. Especially when the new store seems to have eased it's planning application with a million pound 'contribution' to the council, to be used on filling towers with flowers. Pretty in the short-term, but ultimately showing very poor long-term vision. |
Re: Recession List 2009!!
I chat to the traders in the Market Hall, whilst doing my regular shopping, and they genuinely see their long-term future as being very bleak.
The recession is difficult enough for them, but they see the fact that they can't compete with town centre megastores on price, as the death knell for their businesses. |
Re: Recession List 2009!!
It is not just Accrington that is suffering, we were in Leeds christmas shopping and their market isn't a patch on what it used to be. Unfortunately a lot of people want to buy all their shopping under one roof. Can't blame the council for that and as I pointed out in another thread the owners of the Arndale might get more tenants if they reduced the rents.

Regardless of previous ownership if administrators feel some stores are viable and some aren't then it's down to cost & revenue. If the 2 don't add up then somethings not right. The revenue is determined by footfall. |
Re: Recession List 2009!!
yeah but the owner elaine mcpherson should of looked after the stores she already had instead of opening new ones. maybe and i mean MAYBE! we could of been ok
