One or more of the large mail order catalogue companies will fold
GUS, Littlewoods, Grattons etc.
This will be due to losses in revenue as more customers default on payments and their inability to match/undercut prices of goods for sale online

I think PC World is in difficulty. They appeared to be trying to generate cash flow by selling some products off massively reduced and way under the market rate.

Not sure how this will affect the rest of the dixon group.

Not surprised really ever since they pulled out their franchise from Blackburn Debenhams. They were the starters in sexy, stylist clothing for the very slim people of this world (not the real world though!). Others have caught up with them, and they have not moved on. Style good, quality crap.

Nice Quote that Dave, had me chuckling for several minutes!! Their staff really wind me up too, was in there the other week and got pestered by 4 different members of staff within 10 minutes...then when i asked for product advice i got blank stares!

Things arnt looking good for sure, was in Llandudno early this week and their Woolies was all shut up and looked really bleak, its a sight which is going to prove very depressing in Accrington from Monday.

I think Debenhams might struggle this year, also Ethel Austin.

Yeah but they are all separate businesses or franchises aren't they, depends how each one copes. Never been since the early days, got way to pricy. Used to take the kids up to see the birds occasionally, and seometimes buy cheap rolls of material on that outside stall. Not been for years

One of the big Supermarkets could easily go to the wall this year. I wouldn't make a prediction but Asda might be the one. Aldi could go, too, as Lidl seems to have cornered that market. Superdrug isn't competing with Boots any more and several of the High St. "names", like BHS and Next, may follow. Debenhams is hanging by a thread - in this area at least - and I have my doubts about Dorothy Perkins/Burtons.

Re: Recession List 2009!!

Sadly 10-15 years from now there will be no high street as we know it due not to recession closing shops but the power of supermarkets. Zavvi is down and out now and HMV wont be far behind. If you can pick a DVD CD console game at least 10% cheaper on your weekly trip to the supermarket why go elsewere? Even the loyal customers are eventually going to desert all the high street shops and go to the supermarkets. No one can compete with the buying and bullying power of the supermarkets so the little shop will be no more.

As a footnote it is our yearning for the lowest pricesa possible for what we want that has helped exaserbate the retail problems we have. Shops have bills wages tax etc to pay and that is worked into any prices they charge yet we want goods cheap. So a small firm cannot compete because they cannot make enough money to stay afloat.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, as it makes depressing reading to check through this thread, but there's a closing down sale sign in the shoe shop opposite Marks and Spencers.

The lovely gift/fancy goods shop on Church Street near the Regency has also recently closed.

Today's trip to Accy today was like walking round a ghost town.

Very few shoppers, and a dwindling number of shops.

A situation I see only worsening when the new Tesco opens.

Some of this situation is down to the global financial crisis, and some of it is down to some lunatic planning desicions by the local powers that be.

Will the last person to leave Accrington town centre please turn out the lights.

.

I saw the signs and thought, not suprised. Then I saw the smaller writing at the top and it actually says Central Warehouse closing down. Looks like bad advertising by Shoe Zone because it's caused a stir in a few towns, ( actually it may be good advertising on that basis :D )

Here's the reson behind it;
Stead and Simpson had been taken over by Shoe Zone last January, but had kept its name.

Each firm had kept stock in its own central warehouse but Stead and Simpson's warehouse was being closed and in future the firm would share Shoe Zone's facility. Stock from the closing warehouse is on sale.

The council should never have approved Planning Permission for this new Tesco .. as previously, would have thought the plans by Sainsburys opening into the Arndale Centre would have been a better bet.

why are tescos being blamed for the demise of accrington town center? lets face it, the town center has never moved with the times, we cant attract big name shops, b/burn and burnley town centers are only a short bus trip away and manchester is a £5 return ticket away.

the real damage was done when supermarkets branched out and sold clothes, books, electrical items etc etc. if they where only allowed to sell grocerys then maybe wardleworths would still be there, adams wouldnt have shut down and woolworths would be busy again.

The whole point of H.B.C.'s decision to expand the Arndale and create more retail spaces, along with the decision to move the outdoor market/bus station, again to create even more retail units in Accrington, was supposedly to attract major chain multiples to the town.

An ill thought out planning concept, considering the number of existing shops Accrington already had at the time.

It's only two short years ago that the council leader was boasting in the press and listing the names of retailers that had moved to Accrington since the 'revamp' of the town centre.

I fear the list would be a lot shorter today.

The credit crunch may yet be the saving grace of our council, for there is now a handy excuse to blame others for our problems, and not the gross incompetence of those who really shouldn't be running a Tombola stall at a church fete, nevermind a borough's multi-million pound budget, and it's planning office.

Bit nearer to this one coming true. Shop direct have announced 1250 job losses and Grattan recently announced 1300 job losses

OK I accept all that.....what would be your planning concept?....we can all scoff at what has or should be done...give us your ideas of a bright future and if you in fact are capable of running a tombola stall?

I fear that unless you can afford my consultancy fees you'll have to remain in ignorance of my ideas.;)

I had a wonderful and very successful career, if you're at all interested, but I'm afraid that when hiring staff most of our councillors wouldn't even have had enough qualification or business experience to merit even a first interview.;)

Yes we can.

Just as we can praise, as I have done on this forum when the council have done something good.

Sadly H.B.C.'s performance lends itself more to the former, rather than the latter.

Again, as I've said many times before on here, the best borough I ever lived in was Tory run Wandsworth, the worst was loony left Lambeth.

Any criticism I make of our council is based purely on performance as I see it, and cost, and not because of any political bias.

I think your advert may have put Garinda off Lancsdave ... probably thinks 'mug prints' will be a Dingles imprint on his face ... LOL.

If Rindi visits dave's stall he will probably strike a limited edition coffee mug say Rindi was here and the date and time stamped on them for posterity, in years to come they'll be worth thousands on Bargain Hunt:D:rolleyes:

We'd be totally screwed up if Joneses mob were in charge then wouldn't we, the nearest thing to a businessman they've had in recent years was a bloke who ran a chip shop:D,

But do we need another mobile phone shop??

But in saying that we currently have carphone warehouse, phones4u, Orange, O2 and T-mobile so why not have vodaphone aswell. You soon wont be able to buy anything in town but at least you'll be able to get a mobile phone

I reckon it is the one on the corner nearer to the railway bridge. We used to go to that offy as teenagers and hang-around waiting for a kind "adult" to go in for us and come out with a packet of 10 Number 6 and a bottle of cider.....they were the days!!
