Ok in scotland ... they're talking about banning 2 for 1 on alcoholic drinks, minimum pricing, and possibly nightclubs contributing to the policing costs for people leaving the nightclub.

Now the woman who was interviewed the off licence owner says that shopowners shouldnt have to police what the customers are drinking ... I was in the co-op in haslingden this afternoon and they wouldnt serve a customer with booze because he was drunk ... and in fact the girl said it was illegal for her to serve him with the 2 litre bottle of cider because he was drunk and that she could get in trouble for it. She took the bottle of cider from him and the man stumbled out of the co-op and she said at least he didnt get nasty.

yep, and McDonalds are responsible for all yard wide asses waddling about everywhere ? should we put a special NHS tax (5p) on all double cheeseburgers because of the increased costs in treating type II diabeties ?

sorry Shillelagh, but it all comes down to personal responsibility, if you want to live in an Orwellian type state where the Govt. takes care of social engineering just keep voting for fascists in the Labour party ...;) ;)

We can always rely on the Alcoholics to keep the pubs open during the week,Thus enabling the working minority to have a place to wind down on the odd weekend.:D:D

im glad you said alcoholics because its them on the sick that get paid extra money for buying booze when on benefits and can afford to prop teh bar up during teh day

i wonder if people with cancer can get money for fags when on the sick ?

if your an alcoholic but pay for your own booze then thats your choice

It's bloody hard to get nice and steamy up there anyway.
No alcohol sold after 10pm in shops drove me bonkers!

True enough but there is still a major binge drinking culture up here. They stock up aplenty before 10pm and then drink the lot. As for the alky brigade keeping pubs open is true but sadly some of these alkies are in school so keep the off licences going in the evening.

So there is no point in not selling it after 10pm.
It is down to the mentality of these drinkers, cost and reduced time to buy will not make a difference.

Exactly what I was thinking cashy, why punish everyboy for the failings of a few, I kind of like 2 for 1 deals at ASDA, but I don't get rolling drunk.

Agreed so to me they are floggin a dead horse up here trying. It seems that if by 14 you aint been pie eyed once you are a wimp according to the teen rules of weekend fun.

Doesn't seem all that extreme ... In Ontario, we have had laws similar to this for a long time and they haven't seemed to slow down the drinkers who don't abuse alcohol .... all Beer Stores and liquor stores have limited hours, and all ID anyone who looks underage. It is also illegal to serve obviously intoxicated persons in any outlet (tho' in the clubs, where it is crowded, and difficult to police, people seem to get as drunk as they please) ... police regularly pick up people for public drunkeness and give them accomodation for the night (the tank). There is a legal minimum at which outlets can sell booze ... I belive that for beer it is $25 for a 2-4. All these regs. don't seem to put up barriers for folks who just want to have a good time, without screwing things up for everybody else.

Of course, this is in Ontario: each Province sets its own liquor laws.

maybe its about time we reverted to only selling booze from licenced off licences instead of it been available from supermarkets and petrol stations , that way if a shop soley sells booze they may think twice about selling it to kids if its all they have to sell



it wouldnt cure teh problem but it would cut it down a lot especially if tougher laws come in stopping a family member getting the licence if the owner gets caught

I don't see how they can equate cheep booze with loutish behaviour. Many of the people out of their trees on a weekend hold down well paid jobs during the week. It is not a question of money but having the common sense to stop drinking when you've had enough. Unfortunately, as proved in many other aspects of society, many people today do not have any common sense, so just do not know when to stop.

The sensible ones amongst us, many of who have been drunk on a Saturday night in town, have made their way home quietly via the kebab shop and caused no problem to anyone. It is not a money issue, it is a behaviour issue and being responsible for your own actions.
