TE Higham was mayor in 1906

I know you've found the right Mayor now, so this is just incidental, but this is the second source that quotes T.E. Higham as being the Mayor in 1908.

'Accrington library was opened by the Mayor of Accrington, Alderman T E Higham, on 18th Jan 1908.'

lcl - - history of the library

So either L.C.C. is wrong, or your anonymous source is.

Incidentally T.E. Higham Esq. was also conducting the Accrington Choral Society in the 1890's.

On the 24th November, 1890 he conducted Madame Fanny Moody in the Town Hall..

I wonder if the show ended when Madame Fanny sang?

Just re-looked at the Jubilee book ... there is a list of the Mayors ... looks like T.E. Higham was Mayor 1906-07; 1907-08 .. two years on the trot. But J.C. Lupton is definitely your man Gayle.

Some I notice were Mayor three years on the trot.

Madame Fanny was probably billed as 'the number one tribute act in the country' for Jenny Lind, or some other such singer.

Somethings never change around here.:D

Thank you Kate.

So Mr, or Ms. Anonymous was wrong, stating he was Mayor in 1906 only.

Matter settled. :)

Another thing I have just picked up from one of Bob Dobson's books is that 5,000 scholars walked up Avenue Parade to receive a medal marking this occasion in 1909 with 15,000 people witnessing the occasion. Wouldn't it be great if we could generate such interest this time.

Those were the days when the community had real pride in the borough Kate....and yes, it would be wonderful to re-create such pride and interest.

You would have to put a story in the paper saying it was an outdoor meeting about cancelling all benefits for girls who had children before they were 16 to generate that amount of interest in Accy.

It wasn't uncommon in those days for a Councillor to be the Mayor for more than one year.

A prerequisite of being the Mayor in those days, was that you had to have few bob. They would also never have let riff-raff like me do it those days.

You would also notice it was an all male preserve for many years.
