BBC News - Sceptics stage homeopathy 'overdose' to discredit drugs


Homeopathy sceptics have staged a mass "overdose" of homeopathic remedies, in a bid to prove they have no effect. Protesters ate whole bottles of tablets at branches of Boots in places such as Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, London, Leicester, Edinburgh and Birmingham.


But why .. if some people prefer to use homeopathic remedies rather than traditional medicine then let them.

But why protest outside boots because theyre selling them .. its not just boots that sell homeopathic remedies .. superdrug does, any chemist does, even holland and barratt do ... so why pick on boots ..

Anyway the protesters took an 'overdose' of some homeopathic remedies .. god knows what but still took an overdose .. thing is what would have happened if there was a reaction .. they'd have had to go to hospital for a stomach pump or whatever ..

nowt wrong wi protesting, but not fer summat stupid:( to me its a case of whatever does a person good, fine by me. seems to n epidemic of knobheads these days.:rolleyes:

Jen they were trying to prove that there is no active ingredient in the remedies......there fore taking an overdose would do them no harm whatsoever.
The principle that these sceptics fail to realise is that the body will only use what is useful to it.
Homeopathy works, and not because it has a placebo effect(it works on babies and animals who don't experience the placebo effect because they cannot comprehend it)...it works because it is tailored to the individual, and because every single individual is unique, the results cannot be replicated in someone else.......that is why scientists do not accept its efficacy.

it won't cure cancer, and if you have a condition that requires surgical intervention, then it won't alter the need for that, but it can and does cure common conditions.

A homeopath will take a very detailed history before working out the appropriate remedy.

I would be really interested to find out if any of them had any ill effects from this publicity stunt.

I suppose the two obvious results would split the protesters in half, Those that Don't care & those that can't do anything else.

"Hey Elsie I'll swap you 60 of my green tablets for 40 of your blue tablets & a toilet roll, let's hope they have a reversing effect for both of us!"

i hope one of the natural remedies they tried was liqurice their next protest will be a sit down one for sure :D

Rubbish. This stuff is total quackery. It's no more than a branch of Witchcraft and Voodoo and the sooner we outlaw this the better. I guess if we were to allow this to continue, then it won't be long before we start importing african children to be sacrificed on some alter (along with an Accy ASDA chicken) so we can drink their combined blood in the forlorn hope of averting the next bout of winter swine flu.

i recall somone once saying that mankind tried all teh herbs and teh ones that worked they called medicine and the ones that didnt alternative medicine lol

mind you if somone wants to try and cure their cancer with a daffodill then leave them to it, its a free world

I can't see a problem with using homepathy medicines myself, can we all be so very sure that conventional remedies work? I don't think any of us would be so naive as to think that certain diseases can be cured just by using homepathy but maybe just maybe used in the early stages it can be a help in preventing these life threating conditions progressing to far.
I ain't no specialist in this subject but will not knock any new form of research, who are we to say it doesn't work?????

i have no doubt that some alternative medicines help relieve symptoms and in some cases are beneficial if not physicaly then mentaly to users but i think its getting on dodgy ground when people start self diagnosing themsleves using google and rushing out to the nearest homiopathic shop instead af a doctor.

I'm surprised our local witch ;) (absolutly nothing wrong with being an adherant of alternative spirituality or medicine , each to their own) hasn't entered into the thread , but i'm thinking she's not being baited by the local "vox populi " . Not really into alternative medicines or therapies (including 12 step mumbo jumbo) :D but each to their own ,

I wonder if the money that homeopathy makes money the same way that the traditional drugs companies do?

Tealeaf, you are talking out of you nether end again......stop eating mushy peas.

Don't you think the pharmaceutical companies make lots of money on medicines that cause side effects that require yet another product to control them? And they run laughing all the way to the bank.

anyone who has looked into homeopathy will realise that it works because the remedy is tailored to your own individual needs.....it isn't a one size fits all medication.

Do you, who slate alternative therapies, realise that most of the medications currently on the market were trialled on MEN........and then it was assumed that women would benefit from the same drugs......all this despite medical science recognising that womens bodies and physiology is very different....? and now it is being recogniised that some medications tested on men, will have adverse, or less than the best therapuetic effects on women.

Still that won't worry you Tealeaf, because you seem to have little regard for the fairer sex.

and the answer to your question Spuggie, is No it doesn't.
Remedies are relatively cheap, it is the time taken by the homeopath that costs the money......a consultation will on average last one and a half hours....then of course the homeopath has to go away and analyse the findings, seek out the appropriate remedy, and then prescribe it.
It won't be like a visit to your GP(an average time consultation is just 7 minutes) where he/she is writing you a prescription as you sit down.
