A shovel is a tool for picking up sweepings, a spade is the N that ideally operates the shovel!

Will you stop it off:D:D:D:D

Cashy, i'm not suggesting that Margaret is an offensive person, just that the comments she chose to make would be considered just as offensive to a Brain Injured Person as the N word would to a Black person. I asked if it was a term she would be happy to use directly to someone's face, and as she hasn't said yes, then i assume the answer is probably no! I know on the internet as in text speak, its sometimes difficult to convey emotion and feeling, which is one reason why smilies and the like can sometimes help, however a rule of thumb i use when making posts or sending texts is never to say or write something, that i wouldn't be willing to say to someone's face. Obviously we all know that political correctness has gone barmy in this country, blighting "free speech" as we once knew it. However if we accept that lines have to be drawn somewhere, then we should have a level playing field, and show at least the same discretions when talking about Disabled People for example as when referring to someone's colour!
I'd feel happier...and would probably be more justified in calling some of our MP's and Judges "Mentally Decfective" than a Brain Injured Lad!;)

I think the term mentally defective is only offensive to someone who is mentally defective.

Wrap it up in whatever nicey nicey terms you want, but if someone is defective mentally then they are mentally defective and just because you do not like the term being used for you & yours does not mean that it cannot ever be used for other people.

Letting a delivery firm install a cooker ? heck thats fraudulent too so wither the person next door to Margaret is a devious fraudster or their brain is somehow defective.

As for the nig word, well they use it themselves...

Perhaps they have sent you one, is there anyone on your street that could be a bit erm, err, well, shall we say, mentally deficient that has got to it first?

Well if its offensive to a Brain Injured person then it shouldn't be used in general terminology then should it. I dont know anyone who is involved with people who have been disadvantaged in this way, who would feel comfortable using or hearing that term used. I know its difficult sometimes trying to use a concise term that conveys meanings without giving offence, the term Disabled is objected to by some, but seems to be the most accepted term nowadays! As you say because i'm close to the situation it perhaps makes me more sensitive than others who are not, but i must admit if someone did call my son a Mental Decfective to his face, i'd have difficulty in restraining myself from thumping them!

Well, that surely shows you have issues of self-control that need to be mastered, violence doesn't solve anything, cue the old joke and I'll fight anyone that says it does.

You have told us many times now you are offended & that as well as your son probably your dog is offended,

The Second Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary contains full entries for 171,476 words in current use, and 47,156 obsolete words
now why don't you take some time off, calm down, read through it and come up with a term that can be used universally for anything without causing offence somewhere to somebody, there will always be differences of opinion on the description of many types of thing and even more about many types of people.

However, to take offence when none was intended is downright bad manners.

That does sound unusual, and especially uncomfortable if it's an oddly shaped package.
