There are rumours ;) that a large military exercise is underway in the North Sea and it is due to end on 22nd.
Maybe the flight ban will be lifted then.

Parts of Russia, and Poland, remain unaffected so far, because of the weather.

Might be cut to two days this year.

'Volcanic activity affects not only land and sea, but the atmosphere as well. 1816 was known as the "Year without a Summer" following a powerful eruption of Mt. Tamboura in Indonesia a year earlier. The eruption of Krakatoa in Indonesia in July of 1883 produced similar effects worldwide. This great eruption was heard about 3,000 miles away. It produced sea waves almost 130 feet (40m.) high that drowned 36,000 people on nearby islands. There was a loss of 20-30% of direct solar radiation for three years after the eruption. That explosive eruption injected clouds of debris high into the stratosphere. Large volcanic eruptions like Krakatoa can cause short-term cooling of the climate by ejecting great quantities of dust, ash, carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. Particles of sulfur dioxide in the volcanic dust can reduce the amount of incoming radiation, effectively cooling the upper atmosphere. When the particles of SO2 combine with water vapor, they produce sulfuric acid. Another consequence of some volcanic eruptions is therefore an increase in acid rain.
Brilliant sunsets and cooler summers followed the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. The eruption of this Philippine volcano spewed about 15 million metric tons of sulfur dioxide gas into the atmosphere. The resulting aerosol cloud depressed the mean global temperature by some 0.5oC.'

maybe all these folks stranded miles from 'home' should just sit back , take a deep breath and say to themselves "its the journey not the destination " ....... Blazey stuck in China could follow the old silk route home, following the steps of Marco Polo and get a better education about life than any book learning at Lancaster Uni (horrible Australian affectation) folk stuck in Greece could enable themselves of a ride on the Orient Express and see Europe as it really is . Travel can't really be that hard these days if 12 year old penniless refugees from Somalia or the Congo can make it to London with no problem ...

As one of my old British Passports (Blue hardback) states ......"Her Brittanic Majestys Principal Secretary of State ....requests and requires in the name of Her Majesty..to pass freely without let or hinderance and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as necessary" .
For some reason the above quote has been shortened in my red soft backed UK issued European Community passports . :D :D

If it really will be May before they can get a flight back, those stranded might be better going down to the docks, and see if it's possible to work their passage, on a slow boat from China.

It is brave of Blazey to go to China alone, and commendable that she has not resorted to panic in a very difficult situation.

I would seek help from the nearest British embassy - that's what they are for.
They can pay out for repatriation expenses and recover that from you later.

Keep your chin up lass.

It is a worry, and I too hope she's ok, and gets back very soon. However she's an adult, and went to China to further her education, which will hopefully help her career options. She's an intelligent young woman, and I have no doubt she'll use that intelligence to keep herself safe, just as she would wherever she was, even in this country.

There are young people who go off into the world for all sorts of reasons. Some to volunteer their services in countries with very real poverty, and some who risk/give their lives in the armed services, and some who travel just for the experience.

I'm sure how she was trapped in China, and how she coped, will make an interesting tale to tell her grandchildren.

This is one time when you realise the benefits of our flexible friends, the credirt cards.

Years ago people took cash and travellers cheques, with many coming home with just a few coppers in their pockets.

Being without any means to try and find transport, or accommodation and food, would be a true nightmare in this situation.

There you go again Marge seeing conspiracies where there aren't any :) Back in 1993 we were involved in a Regatta in the Kieler Bucht heading to Denmark. Kiel is pretty much the home of the German Navy & in particular their Submarine fleet. The Yacht club was based inside the Base & we sailed out past the U-Boat pens, no issues.

At the same time there was a major NATO Naval exercise going on, Submarine Hunter/Killer teams were patrolling & the Navies had to locate them. Involved were the British, French, German & Danish Navies, not only did we sail through but various other Yachtsmen & women, not a peep. The only time we were herded was when a Sub had been detected & it was about to make an emergency breach to the surface, we were shepherded out of the danger area.

On our return leg we were followed in by a Sub with just its conning tower sticking out of the Sea, a rather awe inspiring & intriguing sight & again not a peep from anyone. Sometimes there really are just genuine reasons for certain things. :)

People have took some lovely snaps of the ships taking part in exercise Brilliant Mariner, from passing boats and other ships in the area, which is open to other vessels.

Brilliant Mariner: any pics?

It was one of the first films Bergman made after returning to Hollywood, after being exiled for ten years, because of her afair with Rossellini.

You must watch it.

It's a good film.

When asked what I wanted to do when I was about six or seven, this is the reason why I used to reply 'a missionary'.

You know when Lord Adonis is lying, it's when he opens his mouth.

Truth is no one seems to really know what is and is not safe. The airlines don't want to make the decision in case they are wrong and get sued, same for the aircraft manufacturers so it is down to governments to sort it out.

I just hope that it is the right decision and that the cloud has now dispersed enough for it to be safe for air travel.
The last thing we need is a aircraft making a no engine landing.
I for one will be revising the Boeing 737 'Loss of Thrust on Both Engines' checklist before I head back to the sun this weekend, hoping I will not need it.
Be safe everyone.

So yeah, I have 6,000 words on trademark law to write by Friday. Best get cracking. Fortunately Shanghai can be a pretty cheap place to live. I'm only paying £5.50 a night and the staff speak English and are honest. The woman at the desk accidentally charged me a night longer than she was meant to yesterday, and although she is meant to be kicking us all out then because the hostel is booked up for Shanghai Expo, she is letting me stay rather than refunding me the money.

I'm stressed out as you can imagine, but this is because I am struggling to access the right sources to complete my work here, not because I'm stuck in China. China is an amazing country to be in.

Also, I no longer have my passport as the Chinese police have it for my visa extension request, so I'm not going anywhere until I have that back!

Blazey, best of luck with your university work. I hope you get it in by Friday:Banane19:

Try to enjoy your extra time, I know it can be hard when you are cash strapped. I am sure everything will work out in the end. I know this is probably no use now, but did you register with the embasy in China, they might be able to help.
In a year or so you will look back and laugh.
Safe travelling

I'm enjoying my extra time here, learning some more of the language casually from the staff here at the hostel. I'm not treating this trip as being cash strapped either because I do have my student loan and the uni are going to help me out financially when I get home. As for laughing, I'm still laughing now. It's a good trip and China is amazing. Just a bit stressed over my work but I'm a hard worker and it will get done one way or another. Just need to persevere and look after my health, both physically and mentally.

And this will be an amazing story to tell when I am older I'm sure. I don't think the embassies can help me that much now, I've sorted out everything that needs to be sorted like my visa and somewhere to stay. Now I just have to get on with it.

I'm back now. Got back on Thursday morning. They lost my luggage and it still hasn't been returned to me.

But I am glad to be back, even if I have nothing to show for it but £500 of extra debt.

They paid to get home? They're mugs then. My airline covered the flight expense. My expenses were just from food and accommodation and everything else that goes with being stuck in a city that you haven't actually spent any time in/

Yes, I might do when I get a decent chance and I'm not tied up with work. Probably in a few days.

Re: Volcanic ash cloud on its way

They didnt have a choice .. they were offered a flight home on 23rd .. they said yes .. then the airline said that was a no go .. and offered them a flight home at the end of this coming week!!! because the airline only flies out there once a week and wasnt putting any extra flights on. They had to get back one is at university and the other works full time ..

It’s a bit early for Iceland volcano jokes. We should wait awhile for the dust to settle.

I see that America has declared war on Iceland. Apparently they are accusing them of harbouring a “weapon of ash eruption”.

It was the last wish of the Icelandic economy that its ashes be scattered over Europe.

Iceland goes bankrupt, then it manages to set itself on fire. This has insurance scam written all over it.

"Waiter, there's volcanic ash in my soup." "I know, it's a no-fly zone."

Iceland's Government was to reimburse the British Government 75 percent of the compensation it paid to the British deposit holders in Icelandic banks. The British Government paid out CASH; it didn't expect the reimbursement of 3/4 of that to be ASH.

A lot of Spanish airports were closed yesterday, I know because I was 34000 feet above them. Most of the airspace in Europe seems okay at the moment, just got back to Casablanca from Paris, right over Spain. Hope they all got back
