Well, That Is Annoying.

My street was part of the regeneration scheme last year everyone got a whole new front to their house, because of this, a community spirit that didn't exist now does. Lot's of folk putting tub's and hanging baskets out, I've joined in, because I've started from seed my display has yet to flourish but it is getting there.

Went out today I hadn't noticed anything wrong, when I got back this afternoon to my dismay, instead of two hanging basket's I now only have one.

No doubt whoever you are, that took it, you had a greater need of a floral display than I had, but I can't understand why?

To steal because your kids are hungry, to steal because you can sell it on at an immense profit and buy some luxury you can't afford, well yes, if you're that way inclined, I can just about wrap my tiny mind around.

I can't understand though, (you greedy half witted illegitimate basket that needs to be hung), why, steal something of such low monetary value that left alone could have added to the neighbourhood?

You can't hang it around here I'll recognise it.

No doubt though, I'll be wandering around the area in the near future and find the basket and contents just thrown away when you realise this.

Meanwhile, if you are determined to exhibit my flowers, you have a basket, would you care to purchase the spare bracket I now have to hang it from?

This picture shows the bracket you could have taken if you had swung hard enough from it you Ape!

Less, let's face it , we are producing more pillocks than we need - maybe not you or I, but the general population.

Well, gosh, I spent a grand plus on a state of the art P.C. to be told the blindingly obvious, You could have been a little more re-assuring and asked, "what colour will the flowers be in about 6 weeks time Less, I'll keep my eyes open for them".

Idiots!!!!

Probably the same people who have repeatedly torched the benches at St Mary's outdoor classroom.

This time, instead of buying new benches at £300 each we took a different approach. I asked HBC parks department what they were doing with the trees that they were cutting down in Rhyddings Park. The parks department cut the trees into 3ft stumps, we sanded the tops and arranged them in a circle. But knowing that the idiots would be around we dug a ditch to arrange them in and then concreted the bottom foot of the stump in and covered with soil.

So, what have they done?

They have kicked a couple of them and dislodged them. Because they are really heavy they haven't managed to take them anywhere and because they're still fairly fresh they haven't managed to burn them yet.

But like you Less, I question what reason did they do it for. There is no monetary value to them, so why?

The photo shows them the day that we installed them - 12 dads, about 20 kids and a few mums giving up their saturday mornings.

Knowing where you live, Less, your hanging basket will probably end up as a Balti Bowl stand somewhere on Blackburn Road.

Have you asked Accylass if it was her???????????? Has she an alibi???? In all seriousness, it is pathetic that a hanging basket should be stolen. Probably some drunken idiots or just yobs with nothing better to do. "Hang em high" That's what i say.

Thanks for the advice Vera, a bit late now though, I hung it as high as I could without leaving the need to get my steps out to water them, unfortunately that one was too close to an adjoining wall.

I'm sorry to say that incidents like this are the main reason why there are no hanging baskets outside the door of Rishton Towers. If I could believe for one minute that no one would be vindictive enough to spoil an effort to pretty up the street then I'd do it straight away.

Unfortunately....

You never know, perhaps this year I'll risk it.

All I can offer you is encouragement, non of my neighbours baskets or other items have been attacked, (so far), I also have 5 window boxes within easy reach that they left alone.

The more people on the street doing this type of thing the more chance of the Culprits being noticed.

Hopefully there will be a replacement basket by the weekend.

Jaysay could you send me a modified drawing of how to wire my doorbell to the mains, I've found another use for it.

No, the World is good, I've never lived in one better, unfortunately it is the lower life forms that we have to share it with that make it awkward at times, (and I don't mean animals or insects in this context either).

I'm working logically towards a short list.

The guilty party is:-
  • Taller than me, (90%) of the population over the age of 10).
  • Fitter than me, (95% of the population over the age of 3).
  • Interested in weight lifting, no-one without transport would want to carry it very far, I had just watered it.
  • Optimistic, all that was showing were a few green seedlings, what a shame when it matures and they find I have a fetish for nettles.
  • Brain dead, no logic in stealing such a low valued item.
I was thinking of furthering my inquiries and attempting to pose as a fence for this type of thing, but then realised I might encourage others to become professionals in this type of criminal activity.

Oh, and have applied for membership of the 'green' party, they may have a subversive action group that wanted to set my basket free, (I can just imagine it now frolicking over the Coppice).

Further inquiries of various types that can't be revealed at this moment are on going.

I have also been informed that it could be someone with 'green fingers', that wanted to give it a better home they could have rescued it so I'm getting strange looks now as I go around shaking the hands of strangers just to see if their digits are a shade towards chartreuse.
:)

When oyou hang a replacement, use some stiff wire to tie the basket to the hanger.

If they cannot get it off then you have a better chance of keeping it, or them pulling the whole wall down :D

I once had the bright idea of putting a massive chimney pot in my front yard when I lived in Burnley, it took 2 to move it.
Woke one morning to find it had gone. I should have cemented it in.

Thought now that time has gone by, I'd add these.

A nice Sunny Day, so walking home I took some piccies of the efforts people have put in since our street was done up, They can be viewed @ Message - Accrington Gallery

So much better than before with the sad old walls and weeds for gardens, and everyone O was able to speak to so proud of their little contribution, except, me, I put my plants out, treated them with care, and after all this time, I have, a couple of weeds and I'm to proud of them to pull them up!

My one remaining basket is doing nothing. My replacement for the stolen one is out the back and miles ahead.

But, this is our street's first real attempt, I've also noticed other streets in the area that are producing their floral displays, well done to them.

Should we, could we, perhaps all get together and have a floral display/competition?

Each area combining and showing how we can put on a show?

It doesn't have to be just the refurbed stuff, all of Hyndburn, perhaps, or am I googling wrong and there is already such a thing?
:D

Just a quick update, I bought another basket and have had a reasonable display, I've just come home tonight and stuffed at the side of the basket, is an empty packet of flower seeds.
Has someone sowed some extras for me? This late in the season? I would think we'll have to wait until next year to find out, but thank you goes out to Accrington's version of, Johnny Appleseed

You can wash your Keyboard John....that will stop the keys from sticking.
You just have to leave it to drain or dry it thoroughly with a hairdryer set on a cool setting.

I have hanging plants on my front porch .... nobody has ever interfered with them apart from my neighbour, who has real green thumbs, who waters them when I forget. Maybe stealing useless shlt (well, not worth anything to the thief) is a Brit thing that hasn't made it over here yet.:alright: It doesn't even rate as real vandalism: "vandalism" is painting the basket flourescent green (like the socks I used to wear in my early teens), or dumping it on the doorstep. Doesn't seem like there is much point to stealing it:confused:

Sadly you see lots of tubs and baskets, at car boot sales. Sold by people with no other plants etc, and who look more light fingered, than green fingered.
