Well my other half invigilates at these exams in Wigan and she's been on duty for eight weeks, most days, finishing last Friday

What is there to "invigilate" these days? The kids know the questions in advance, they take textbooks/laptops in to the room with them and then they write out their prepared answer. Still, I suppose someone has to keep them in order when they get bored after 10 minutes or so.

But it wasn't all about the beer. Spent a lot of time in the betting shop with Ray Barker ... that lad knew his horses:mosher: Usually made enough to buy more beer.:rolleyes:

If that was the one during the Cuban Missile Crisis, I remember it. Was in 5 R, that year. In the classroom next to Ben's office. If you stuck your ear to the wall you could hear the thwack as some poor sod got six of the best.:alright:

I was a young, naive first former, but I recall standing at the bottom of Willows Lane watching in amazement as "Gobbin" Owen, my maths teacher pleaded with a crowd of over-excited lads to turn back to school, before they swept past him on their way to the town hall. I reckon that's the point when the swinging sixties really started for me. ;)

Exactly, Eric...this is what proper teaching was all about..the three R's reinforced with leather and cane.

Anyway, what was everybody protesting about back in '62? For the Yanks to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike on the Russkies? For the Russkies to do the same on the Yanks? For the Brits to do 'em both?

By the way, I assume you saw that disgusting insult the Yankee navy made to your Queen earlier on...we should have sunk 'em on the spot.

i was in Accy this morning and i heard the drawling noise coming from outside the town hall, i asked the shop keeper if they could close the doors because it was hurting my ears.....that kid really can't sing

We usually ignore our noisy, ignorant neighbours. And Her Majesty got a great welcome from Canadians. Tomorrow, she will be in Ottawa to help us celebrate our birthday:alright:

Back in '62, the Cold War was a stark reality. And everyone in Britain was aware of the four minute warning: this meant, that in the case of a nuclear attack, the warning sirens would go off just after the bombs landed. Those who didn't live through those days don't realize just how close we came to the "unthinkable". So, I guess we were protesting about being dragged to the edge of extinction ... and until the Russians backed down in the craziest game of chicken ever played, it was definitely touch and go.

Was a little bunch of CND/beatnik types in your year who organised it. The vast majority of youths who participated had very little idea of what it was all about...it was just a lark to them.
