Re: Church Police Station
It was still there in the late 50s/early 60s.
My 1st ex went there to be fined for speeding through Church on his BSA Shooting Star motorbike. (during a courting visit from Dingleland) He always sped through Church because Retta often stepped out to solicit him for custom. Ironically, she was at the court at the same time on a charge of urinating in a public place. |
Re: Church Police Station
It's a good job it got knocked down in the late '60's; otherwise our Muslim friends from West Accy would now have taken it over as a Mosque - its got a little tower there which could easily have been turned into a minaret and the old court room which would have made an excellent prayer centre for the men (women would be in the cells below or the horse stables backing on Lion St.).

Re: Church Police Station
Thanks for that, so would the address be Bank Street or Henry Street?
|
Re: Church Police Station
Bank St.
The little garden you see in front of the piccy is now - and has been since the 1930's - the site of Church Clock. The police station, by the way, is to the right of the picture. The Minaret and the part with the big windows is the court room. Around the side - on Maden Street - used to be the old police houses. It's all now old biddy's sheltered accomodation. |
Re: Church Police Station
Bank St Wadey, became the car auctions later.:)

I am 99% certain that in the mid/late '50s, the entrance on Maden St was used for the Police Station but as I was never in trouble (caught that is), I never had cause to go in there.:D:D:D |

Re: Church Police Station
I don't know the exact date of disuse...I do remember exploring the old stables, cells and court house...I probably would have been about 6 or 7 years old and I do remember the old police houses getting re-done in the late 60's/early 70's, before the car auction place got built.
I guess that the place came into disuse after Accy cops were amalgamated into Lancs cops. So what year was that? I guess there would have been a few years delay in sorting out the infrastructure and pen pushers. |
