Canal thru Hyndburn to be shut down

just checking the world news before turning in , and came across this ... seems the folks who operate the Leeds Liverpool canal have run out of water , and are thinking about closing the section between Wigan and Gargrave ( Yorkshire ) so I guess that means the part which runs thru Hyndburn

BBC News - Drought could close part of Leeds and Liverpool Canal

wonder what provisions the Victorians who engineered and built it had in mind for such a situation.

Guess it could be a good thing , give them a chance to clear out all the srcap metal on the stretch in Church behind where Rothwells used to be , a place where more than one apprentice got shut of a cocked-up job. ;)

Nah, they would let local volunteers do the hard and dirty work, then nick the stuff from the skips when everyone's gone home.
:D

Maybe we can put in a claim for the scrap value.

How many of us are left to share the spoils?

If the closure does go ahead and that is then followed by a very hot August, then we are likely so see the canal being swamped by thick algae growth - the nasty, green stuff which you see in stagnant ponds. The canal will look like thick, pea soup. This could well delay any reopening because there will probably then be substancial clean up costs and at the moment British Waterways are facing massive budget cuts (even before the current round of spending cuts).
