Whats happened to our Mayor and Mayoress?

Have suddenly realised, that I NEVER seem to see photos anymore of our Mayor and Mayoress. Strange! Normally they seem to be attending many local functions and a photo is generally shown in the local Observer.
Wonder why?

Did you see the article in the Observer where the council are considering a directly elected mayor?

Sorry, can't find a link yet, maybe someone else can search.

Don't fully understand this system but, maybe through debate here, things will become clearer to me.

Quote this though:

"Under the directly elected mayor system, the mayor would be elected directly by the electorate and would hold the office for a term of four years.

The mayor would appoint the cabinet and allocate decision making powers between the mayor, cabinet members and the cabinet as a whole"

You can have your say :[email protected] by November 18th. "

Of course, Cllr. Britcliffe has shown an interest to put himself forward... :D

'Boris' Britcliffe ... sorta' flows though .. LOL.

What a coincidence that a person who is likely to lose power at the next election invents a way to remain in power.:mad:

I've seen him in the paper.

Though not as much as 'Why? Because I'm worth it.'

I also recently saw him supporting local business, in the Church Street chippy.

I didn't introduce myself, for fear he'd push my face in my fish and mushy peas. In revenge for comparing him to a puppet. Which I now concede he isn't, as I didn't see any strings when he ate.

No costs were mentioned, regarding having an elected mayor, rather than the system we have now.

Possibly because the Observer has become a useless paper .

I presume there'll be some difference.

We have a mayor for a year, but ward elections only every three.

Or am I mistaken, and we vote every year for one councillor?

I'm mixed up.

I know I have two councillors, and they are elected every three years.

Does everyone get a vote each May, for the local elections?

They used to, in St Andrews ward you miss 1 in 4 years in St Oswalds they vote every year, the reason being that there are only 2 councillors in St Andrews but 3 in St Oswalds (owing to number of electors, everybody votes in county elections every four years which I think would be the case with an elected Mayor

Thought so.

So in the year I miss, there'll be the cost of producing an election to vote for the mayor.

We could always have an online poll on a local community website.

Though it'd probably have to be on here, now that Hyndburn Life failed so miserably.

I think it's just the present leader thinking what he might do after next May.I believe that he may well also be thinking about more of a role at County Hall. Whether the Tories at County Hall are thinking along the same lines I wouldn't know

An elected Mayor was talked about before, and we canvassed opinion on whether there would be any support for such a move. There wasn't any support for the idea then, and I would be surprised if there was now.

Sorry Clare but I don't agree with that.
If people don't see them in the local rag they will start to think they do nothing and are a waste of money.
Which might be why this thread was started.

gynn 23-10-2010 09:45

Re: Whats happened to our Mayor and Mayoress?

There is a clear political agenda behind this thread. Until recently, the mayoralty was always above politics, and some had a higher profile than others, depending on how much they courted the local press. It wasn't a question of how hard they were working, as there is inevitably a full diary for them.

What we are seeing here is the inevitable result of politicising the post.

Peter wading in to open every last thing in Hyndburn when it should be the Mayor's job isn't really helping matters.

The Civic Sunday parade recently was a celebration of the position of Mayor and very well hosted by Cllr Malcolm Pritchard and his wife. The lack of the Leader of the Council at the event made it a non-political event which ended up in cross-party members simply enjoy each other's company.

An elected Mayor would be a costly move for the borough and quite unnecessary although I imagine the proposed salary would be in the region of £30k.....

Mind you, having said that maybe it would show Peter Britcliffe that his popularity isn't quite what he imagines it to be but it would involve stepping down as a councillor first.

Bit of a gamble.

The killer is that under the proposals given it would be impossible to remove him or her from power, even with a vote from full council. The new Mayor would effectively replace the Leader of the Council and hold office for four years. Not very democratic, is it?

I'm just trying to think of anyone who would want such a thing for Hyndburn.

Actually, I suppose I should welcome the proposals.

Peter would have to leave the council and we might stand a chance of getting an opposition leader who I could respect, Doug Hayes for example.

Would he win a borough-wide vote? Well, third time lucky.....

There isn't a publicity department as such up at HBC, most photographs that you see in The Accrington Observer are supplied by the ruling group and it has become a rather one-sided paper. Having said that, there is now a new editor so perhaps we may see a shft of emphasis which extends beyond Peter's posse doling out cheques every week.

I managed to get myself in the Daily Telegraph on Saturday without any effort at all, made it to the nationals!

Well, that is interesting news, 10 or so gold chains arattlin' around our streets and yet I somehow feel that if you give them a slap up meal of pigs trotters or tripe on a stick, (purchased from the Market Hall of course), the bill for all these eminent people will be a great deal less than having a z celeb chef for the day.

Yes, although we don't really class her as a 'publicity department' as such but in essence that's what she could represent, I suppose.

Whilst Peter Britcliffe may use her as such (although I don't know that he does) it is generally considered that anything you want to get into the papers is your own affair to sort out. It may be completely different for the controlling group but officially the council is not there to arrange political promotion within the press.

That hasn't stopped them approving The Beacon newspaper which you will all be getting through your letterboxes shortly (Baxenden even more shortly) to show what the whole council does.

From reading it, it would appear that we don't have any Labour or Independent councillors at the moment though. Still, the legal team have approved it so it can't be political promotion can it?

That hasn't stopped them approving The Beacon newspaper which you will all be getting through your letterboxes shortly (Baxenden even more shortly) to show what the whole council does.

From reading it, it would appear that we don't have any Labour or Independent councillors at the moment though. Still, the legal team have approved it so it can't be political promotion can it?

From my experience its the responsibility of the individual to seek press coverage for political purposes Ken, I was the press officer for the Tory Party in the nineties, whatever you submit is published at the editors discretion, which includes editing the material too

I've also asked about the Leader of the Council's specially minted medal.

I retrieved my copy from the recycling sack, and decided to read it.

Not too bad, and certainly better than the similar paper from L.C.C.

Still be interested to know the cost though. Production, distribution, etc.

I did get a little giddy when it first plopped on the mat. As I always get a hand delivered calendar from H.B.C., and mine is always a presentation, first off the press copy, and I thought it might be that, now the nights are drawing in.

Something to look forward to.

Wonder why?

Your prayers are answered, Atarah. The Latest News Page on the HBC website is now like the Court Circular for the Mayor.
