Election declared void

BBC News - Shadow minister Woolas vows to fight election decision

The result of the general election result in Oldham East has been declared null and void. Shadow Immigration minister, Phil Woolas, has been barred from Parliament for three years. It seems he will ask for a judicial review of the case

Now, come on, lads. Let Jay have his moment of glory. He's got a Labour MP (or -ex MP) banged to rights and he didn't even have to go to the Daily Mail site to do it! :D

I don'r think this is 'owt to gloat about; this judgement has come on the same day as that of Capt'n Hook's right to hold a British passport. It makes you wonder just exactly what can be said about opposing candidates holding extreme views and what cannot be said in an election. I do know that with this court case pending, the candidates in the LBTH mayoral elections had to keep their gobs shut about the eventual winner, an out and out islamic extremist

Of course.. it's made even more ridiculous by the Lib-Dems who brought this "lying" case to court..talk about bare faced cheek!
Anyone with any noggin knows that this sort thing has been going on since the first ever elections began..Tory/Labour/Lib-Dems or whoever.

Made me laugh, seeing your old Lib Dem mate, Simon Hughes, on the news.

Banging on about what a disgrace the man was as a parliamentarian.

Hang on.

Isn't that the same Simon Hughes M.P., who in 1983 arguably fought one of the dirtiest smear campaigns ever in a by-election, in the whole of our poltical history? Who used every homophobic smear he could lay his hands on, to attack Peter Thatchell, and win, what had until then been the safe Labour seat of Bermondsey?

Yes that's the nice little Christian politican, who years later did issue an apology...just before it came out that he too preferred his gentlemen callers round the back.

Hypocrite.

Yes the very same Simon.. maybe now he's coming to terms with his, or his parties treachery..maybe.. but it's to late and I doubt he will even stand as a candidate in 2015.. looks like the house of lords for him.;)
PS a good example!

Tell him that he may have wone that particular battle, but in the long term war, Thatchell's the one the history books will say is noted, and lauded human rights campaigner.

Oh, and Thatchell's a much beter dancer too.

Not much joy there then, for either of them.

There is something to be wary of in all this.. two "judges" declare an election void when thousands voted as they felt.. if the lies made by this candidate were so obvious in the eyes of two people, and the electorate still voted for them.. what does that say for the people of Oldham?..

Never mind, there's another one for you to have a go at now...some Labour MP has been involved in a "scuffle" in the House of Commons. I'll leave you to provide the appropriate link (tip: the BBC one's a bit boring, but the Mail one's nice and sensationalist...just the way you like 'em!). ;)

Should be an interesting bye-election .

Will it be a Coalition candidate against a Labour candidate ?

Or a Conservative candidate , a Liberal Democrat candidate , and a Labour candidate all against each other ?

Will Nick Clegg be there with David Cameron , each slagging off the other's candidate ?

DC n NC will keep their distance so as to avoid upsetting the apple cart. Should be a good bit sparring and might throw a curve ball as well.

I wonder why jaysay hasn't found fit to mention the Tories brought Baroness Warsi to Accrington yesterday to canvass for a local council by-election. Is PB scared of something?

Apparently, if elected, the Labour candidate would become the youngest councillor in the country.

Fairly safe seat, for the Tories to go to the trouble of sending Warsi up.

Saw the Baroness on Question Time, some time past, and she genuinely impressed me. Common sense, talked by a sensible northern lass, even if she is from Yorkshire. Spoke well on the need for equality for all.

Sadly doesn't support civil partnerships, and associated legal benefits. So lost my admiration, for being yet one more hypocrite. Supports equality issues, as long as it's for race, or gender, and not for what she called sinners.

Right on, sister.

THE CHAIRMAN of the Conservative Party was pitted against an 18-year-old novice as the battle for a council by-election intensified.

Political heavyweight Baroness Sayeeda Warsi came to Hyndburn yesterday to knock on doors and meet party activists ahead of the crucial Baxenden by-election.

This thread is of general interest, people on here think I have a hot line to Britcliffe, which is as fare from the truth as saying Tony Blair was as honest as the day is long. Up to May 2001 I was totally involved in local politics, now I'm not even a member of the party, I have more friends on Ac Web than the Tory Party, friends being classed as people who are their for you. When I came out of hospital last year I received a get well message from the leader of the Labour group on HBC, I think I'll say no more now on that subject. The only contact I have from the TP now is Cllr Brian Walmsley and Ken Hargreaves and that's it and to be quite honest that's just how I like it
