Innit funny how history repeats itself. When his parents got married back in '81 we were two years into Thatcherism...unemployment was going through the roof, factories shutting down, Accy a mess..etc. Come next summer it will be a year of coalitionism - if it lasts that long. Unemployment will be going through the roof, market stalls shutting down, Accy a mess.... |

Funny, isn't it, how this story breaks just a few hours after this one...
BBC News - Government to compensate ex-Guantanamo Bay detainees Surely that nice Mr Cameron wouldn't indulge in something so underhand as diversionary tactics...would he? ;) |

It will take the poor downtrodden masses minds off all the gloom that they are going through. Just think of all the street parties and celebrations no doubt paid for by tax payers. :D:D:D:D

Terrible...I went down the pub and that's all they were talking about there. It's like Colditz - you can't escape from it. There's even Colditz on the telly..that seems to be the only alternative.
Anyway, some clever buggar was saying that at the '81 Royal Wedding, each Borough sent a wedding present. So I'm just wandering now what Britcliffe will send - if he's still head honcho. Maybe we can send Katie a crotched hat and maybe Wills a Stanley season ticket..it's only about a three hour drive up from North Wales. |

Royal Wedding
the annoucement that there is to be a royal wedding next year , brought back memories of the street party we had when Charles and Di got wed , i'd have been about 6 or 7 at then time and me and the rest of the kids were all in fancy dress , there were flags and banners and balloons and long tables were everyone sat down to eat , 2 children dressed up as bride and groom and when had a mock wedding
it got me thinking if it would happen again ? is the communinty spirit still there ? Is the Royal Family still what is was ? |
Re: Royal Wedding
I watched the Charles 'n' Di wedding on a beach in St. Tropez.
A hefty German woman was stood right behind me, with her burnt, free hanging baps, threatening to suffocate me. I saw this as a bad omen, that one day they'd go their separate ways. |
Re: Royal Wedding
I spent Silver Jubilee week in Italy - such drastic avoidance measures will not be possible for me next year, but I have developed the habit of not watching TV so I don't expect it will intrude in my life much.

Re: Royal Wedding
Frankly my dears I don't give a damn.
I bet the day of the wedding there will be plenty of money to flood the streets of London with police while the poor souls of Lancashire can't get a response to kids trashing their cars. |

It X Factor off the front page which is good. But moving page 3 is bad. All I can see is all the police bills and a rise in crime. Security will be tighter than any corset or chastity belt.
Though there was some mumbles of an extra holiday for it which I will believe when I see it. |
Re: Royal Wedding...
Oh Dear.....looks like we now have two threads with the same title. Anyway - this one's the lad's thread, for anyone who is somewhat cynical about the timing of the announcement, the cost of the event, the wider implications and whether or not it's going to make any difference to anyone in Accy.
The other thread is the girlie thread - so if you want to talk about wedding dresses, street parties with trifle and wearing daft hats on the day - stick to the other one - and don't waste out time coming on here with your silly little nonsense. |
Re: Royal Wedding...
So, any indication as to whether it's going to be a public holiday?...and will it be on a Friday like Chas and Di's do? Could be ideal for a weekend bender! ;)

Re: Royal Wedding...
Heard nowt yet down here...although there I was listening to a few journo's earlier who were speculating that the bash would be held in St Georges, Windsor under special license; cut out the security and all the rest of the costs and flog the TV rights for lots of wonga.
The other point they raised was on the PM's/Royal Perogative; they found Cameron's bare-faced cheek in standing outside No 10, saying he knew nowt about the announcement hillarious; as PM, HM the Queen would have been constitutionally obliged to inform him of the engagement, probably as long as two or three weeks ago. Pizz easy for him, then, to release the news on the G'Mo payments on the morning of the event. |

It is a post I remember well.....not least because I received green karma for it from Jaysay , RIP , and that made me feel that I had at last "arrived" at Accy Web after a bumpy start . So today the Queen will become the longest reigning British Monarch . What I said 5 years ago I still believe...... No one can match the duty and service she has given to her country . In fact my respect for her grows as the years go by . She has done , and still does a fantastic job . So , well done Ma'am , and may you have plenty more years to carry on what you do so superbly . |
Re: Royal Wedding...
I second that.
|
Re: Royal Wedding...
and I agree with that 100%
|
Re: Royal Wedding...
I whole heartedly agree. I noticed in the press along with all the positive articles the Repubicans are saying now is a good time to abolish the monarchy. I think they would find a President would cost the country far far more than a monarch and where in the world would they have found someone as dedicated as our present Queen has been over all these years. For me she is a National Treasure and Long May She Reign.
|
Re: Royal Wedding...
The other thing about a President, is that it is a political position, therefore likely to be subject to bias and corruption.
There are enough politicians in this country.....no there are too many.....and many of them could not lie straight in bed. They are not like the queen....who is not in it for the money or political kudos, all they really care about is maintaining their place at the trough, and being on a lucrative gravy train. |
Re: Royal Wedding...
Exactly !!! I cannot imagine any president generating the interest to overseas visitors as the Queen does along with all the pageantry that goes along with Royalty. As you say Margaret, politicians are two a penny and in it for what they can get out of it unlike H.M. who has an unbelievable sense of duty. Still doing all the public appearances etc at almost 90yrs old is marvellous too. The cynics who say that is because of her privileged life I think are wrong. Money does not buy good health.

Re: Royal Wedding...
I support the idea of a Head of State who stands ABOVE the cut and thrust of political arguments. It gives a stability and permanence to our whole political process.
I hate the obsequious, crawling approach of ANYONE brown nosing around the Royals - mainly Royal Correspondents. William and Kate are NOT just like any other young couple. George is NOT just like any other toddler. Charlotte is NOT just like any little girl. And together, the LAST way to describe them is 'Just like any other young family'. They represent the ULTIMATE in privilege. But that is what we get. I admire the Queen, not for her privilege, but in the way she has handled herself. She is just a little old lady given a thankless task. Prince Philip provides plenty of entertainment as a pompous buffoon always putting his foot in it. Which probably is his biggest contribution to the ongoing popularity of the monarchy. |
Re: Royal Wedding...
Prince Philip may be a buffoon to many but to the Queen he has been her rock since they married almost 68 yrs ago. I suspect she would not have been able to carry out her duties as well as she has done without him supporting her.
|
Re: Royal Wedding...
I don't like going against the grain,so I'll keep it short, all she really had to do was not die :D

Re: Royal Wedding...
So you don't mind the money that is being taken from your pocket by greedy self serving MP's but you do no like the queen taking what is her due from the privy purse.
This is an 89 year old lady who continues to work for this country. She could have put her feet up years ago and handed the crown to her (loony) son Charles....but she vowed to serve the people of this country for all of her life. That is what she is doing. If you cannot say anything positive, then perhaps you should say nothing, rather than making yourself sound ridiculous.....and back pedalling again(you'd rather have her than scameron is what you said) |
Re: Royal Wedding...
Your trying to put words into my mouth M,you know I despise MP's (nearly as much as I despiae the royals).Could we not have a ceremonial President like Germany :D
|
Re: Royal Wedding...
No I am not trying to do anything of the sort.
A ceremonial President would still need to be paid, would claim expenses, would still be corruptible and would not bring in the same revenue as the queen does(in tourism). If you value your history, and the history of the country so poorly then I feel very sad for you. The Queen has, and is doing a sterling job. I would rather have her on the throne than her son, Charlie boy....So long may she reign!(I hope she lives to be 110) |

International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS) The only surviving witness to the event has died unexpectedly shortly before he was due to give evidence.
