Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
Good, we haven't been there for about 15 years.
My wife had all her shopping nicked whilst she put away the trolley, she spoke to the manager about cctv he said he hadn't got the time nor the inclination to view cctv because somebody couldn't be bothered to watch their shopping. |
Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
Lets face it, the place was never busy was it

Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
It might sound like a daft question but where do people who live in Accrington actually do their shopping?
I mean Tesco isn't doing really doing anything, neither is Asda, Farmfoods is closing down, the new Morrisons is over-priced and when I went in there more people browsing rather than buying. So I am thinking that people who live in Accrington do their shopping elsewhere like Blackburn or Burnley. |
Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
I don't live there, but do my 'big shop' at least once a week in Accrington town centre, and not in any of the major supermarkets.
I shop in Farmfoods, and will miss them. All the years I lived in London I never shopped in supermarkets, prefering independent shops, and the markets. |
Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
I must admit I live in Rishton, and Accrington is pain to get to if you don't drive. The buses are hit and miss. I can get the 152 Burnley Preston service to the Blackburn Tesco or Blackburn Morrisons. It takes 15-20 on the bus but Accrington in can take upto 45 mins because the bus goes via Great Harwood and Clayton Le Moors. There is a small bus from Rishton to Accrington but it goes through all the estates into Accrington and the last bus leaves Accrington at 1605.
The 241 hospital bus that goes from Clitheroe to Royal Blackburn Hospital via Accrington is very infrequent aswell. |

err, the farmfood shop floor was part of woollies for years whilst I was a nipper so hasn't been open anywhere near 40 years... You mistaken Cashy? ( I remember buying my very first set of spanners in that "part" of the woolies store when I was 9 ( 1978 ish )), Draper, still have 2 or 3 of them in my toolbox today... As for the Labourites... do you seriously think that a Labour gov would be doing anything sensible right now? without the defeat you would probably still have GB as leader and we all know how financially astute he wasn't... |
Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
i must admit we went ,wel drove down to Accy on saturday morning , mi other half needed to put some cash in her bank , could we find anywere to park !! after drivin round block for 5 mins , i said we goin to Blackburn , 10 mins we was there parked up and got her money in bank , and had a wander round the "new market "
Accy needs to have a big look at the town , all the market stalls are jumble , broadway are pound shops and charity shops , (i don't mind them but accy has too many ) i see Gibson sports is closeing down as well as farm foods , But on a Plus side We have a winning Market hall !! have the voters ever been in there ?? well thats my input to Accy town center so enjoy !! ian |
Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
The lease runs out on the shop in September and the company don't want to renew it, thats why it is closing, just incase anyone was wondering

Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
The train is a better option from Rishton...takes 5 minutes and leaves Rishton just after 10 to the hour...back 19 mins past each hour. Plus if two people travel one travels half price after 9.30am or any time weekends on a duo ticket. £2 day return for one person so cheaper than bus too

Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
Accy is dying in terms of shopping, parking is almost impossible with all the spaces on double yellows being taken up by pimped up bmw's. I for one shop at Morrisons in Great Harwood or Aldi in Accy, that's as close as I get

Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
I think the main problem with Accrington, as a shopping destination, comes down to poor policy decisions, and bad planning.
Arsing about with what was a very successful market, has had a bad knock-on effect for other town centre shops, now the market is a pityful shadow of what it once was. That, plus the decision to allow the building of more retail spaces than a town our size can support, and which has resulted in umpteen former retail business properties left as empty shells. |

There is always something shutting but it will be a grate loss to accrington.

Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
I do my "big shop " online as I don't drive, work full time and find it more convenient. I do use the market in Acc when I am down there but that is seldom during the cricket season, more often in the off-season. I use Spar on Burnley road for everyday stuff like bread and have my milk delivered by a good old fashioned milkman! And I visited the aforementioned second hand bookstall this morning, got 3 puzzle books for £2.50 for the hols, top value!:)

Time to resurrect this thread due to the problems at Game. Notice on Gamestation window says store now closed.
Which charity shop will open up there ? |

Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
Well we've had 2 more charity shops opened within last couple of weeks, what's 1 more between friends. Maybe Maundy could take it on, get themselves on Accy's main thoroughfare, spread their word, just in case someone visiting our thriving shopping town hasn't heard of them. Come on HBC pull yer heads from you know where & strive to get some decent shops into Accy, make it worth peoples time venturing into town to 'shop'.
|
Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
We could get another £1 shop

Then there was the destruction of the outdoor market which put almost all of the stall holders out of buisness as they couldnt be accomodated on broadway in those blue metal hut things that were dumped there so by teh time the market was finished most of teh stall holders had moved on and this is why most of the stalls only sell junk now dont know what the current lot are doing but i wouldnt hold your breath on retailers getting a helping hand but i do hope i am proven wrong .Mind you if they are a big buisness and offer to build a roundabout and splash a bit of tarmac down it seems to do the trick around here when you need a little help with pesky planning etc It seems so easy to pick fault and remember what has been done to screw our town up and it shouldnt be infact it would be nice if noticable efforts were remembered and im sorry but flash dances and foriegn foodmarkets dont save towns they come and go its long term plans that are needed and preferably ones that work with the retailers and give breaks when times are tough. only when it was too late did teh council drop the parking disc scheme.By the time it was dropped all it meant was that you didnt have to display a disk when nipping to pundland for batteries or a browse through charity shops dont get me started on the new look market hall if that little steak through the towns heart didnt finish teh town off i dont know what it will take to do so but it wont be pretty. edit: hang on the new bus station may do it !!! |

seems 2 me this town is run (down)by chimps been that way 4 ages now i could rant 4ages but this town and its higher ups tire me so
|
Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
Not sure what the council can do. The problem is retailers don't want to invest in a town, and existing ones won't survive when the town is fast becoming the biggest magnet for the dregs of society. There aren't many towns where one of the biggest businesses in town encourages that

Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
Notice outside Accrington Superbowl this morning says that due to the current economic climate it has closed! Don't know if this is the same for Vue cinema too as it doesn't say on the notice!

Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
Just noticed on Broadway, "The Coffee Shop" is closed n interior is being gutted.
|
Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
Heard today that another shop is to go from The Arndale. BURTONS are going to move out!
So recent "closures" are BON MARCHE, THORNTONS, J and T COSMETICS, a fairly new stationery shop that didnt last long, CLINTON CARDS has gone this week, and now the new rumour about BURTONS WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR TOWN? |
Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
From what I was told a while back Burton's is closing quite a few shops & trying to get sales via the internet. Accrington went to the dogs a long time ago but the council obv can't be arsed to do owt about it. But at least there's room now for another charity/pound/or card shop. Then they wonder why Blackburn's getting the trade.

Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
Maybe they should change the plans for the Bus station. Knock the Arndale down and use that land for the bus station - after all, pretty soon it is going to be just an empty shell anyway.
|
Re: Arndale another one bites the dust.
Maybe the council should ask themselves WHY other towns, although experiencing economic difficulties, aren't being deserted by the public at the same rate? Took a walk through the Arndale the other week and it really was a heartbreaking sight - shop after shop closed and shuttered. :(
