We had season tickets. One week Burnley, the next Rovers. Rovers was more exciting, especially as we always went in the Darwen End, for some reason, with the visiting bovver boys. Burnley I thought of as more cosmopolitan. You could get chips in a cone, printed with Edwardian new stories. I've always been easily impressed. :D I have been to Accy today. After a bad week, today was a good one. I didn't even NEED a seat. :) |

Say what!?
Those benches can never be returned? Not those, perfectly good, original ones? One was definitely broken beyond repair, whilst being removed for this 'experiment'? No longer stored on H.B.C. property? All benches from in front of Market Hall, last seen on the back of gypsy's wagon, after he was told to take them away, and off they went? Never to be seen again? Well who the Freaky Freddie would Adam 'n' Eve this little nugget of information? Certainly more interesting than anything those little Labour moles used to come up with. Perhaps I will take up the offer, to go and see one of the 'joint decision makers'. They might even go and show me the benches, safe and sound, disproving this latest information. I could take snaps. Or....perhaps that won't be possible, because every word, very sadly, is true!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:  Shameful, wasteful, illogical, utter lunacy!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: |

I find it hard to believe that HBC would use non licensed waste carriers to take away waste for them. Someone must be pulling your chain.

I'd love it to be proved otherwise. This information was only brought to my attention in the last twenty four hours, from a very reliable source, and has nothing to do with my own, selfish, opposition to them being removed. That being, I used 'em, like many other non-alkies, and appreciated being able to sit on them. |

It was suggested that the social scientist, who carried out this 'experiment', or those who tried to defend it, might not yet know, as to the fate of the benches they ordered the removal of. Which excuses nothing. Other than make the whole episode look even more shambolic. As well as being a totally illogical way to tackle a problem. Pathetic episode all round. |

Re: HBC have taken away the benches from outside the market
Somewhat ironically, it was whilst stood in Accrington, that someome who knew the fate of these benches, and who has been following this fiasco, came up and gave me the information, that they are no longer the property of the council, after someone phoned up, and got the gypsies to come and take them away.
I was so flabbergasted, I could have done with a seat, after being told the true story. |

Re: HBC have taken away the benches from outside the market
Maybe there is a “silver lining” here.
At least one bench was corroded and weak, I imagine the other wasn’t far behind. Better to have found out whilst it was being moved ( for whatever reason) than to have had it collapse whilst in use. We might get some sturdy new benches and I’m sure some folk will have learned lessons along the way. |

Re: HBC have taken away the benches from outside the market
Though it was patiently explained to us, that after this experiment, 'they' would be returned to their original site.
No mention of the Health & Safety issues then, or they would have stated 'some' benches will replace them. |

Perhaps that's why it's called trottin'.
Make a call, then watch property, bought with hard working peoples' taxes, trot off. Though a flat bed truck doesn't really make a proper trot-trot sound. |

Re: HBC have taken away the benches from outside the market
Had an appointment in Accrington today. Came, even did some shopping.
Happily managed to keep shuffling, and didn't need a place to sit. Mind you, the gang of eight women, I won't call them ladies, didn't need seats either. As they created havoc, by shouting and abusing people on Broadway, for a good quarter of an hour, starting about 1.20 p.m. They weren't kids. These were women in their twenties, and thirties. High as a kites, and six of them openly drinking alcohol, whilst carrying out their mini-campaign of terror. Last seen staggering up Broadway, towards Abbey Street. They never sat once. Though they did try to intimidate innocent people who were sat on the benches on Broadway. By screaming in the faces of the old ladies, who had stopped to sit awhile in our town centre. |

These situations just don't happen in Accrington, you're making it up. They couldn't possibly have been going to Abbey St either because there is nowhere on there thats of any use to them whatsoever. Bit like I'm making up the fact there were 3 women ( probably 3 of your gang of 8 ) sat on an empty Market Stall at 1pm yesterday each with a can of white lightining by their sides. I specify it was white lightning just to prove I'm making it up. |

You've invented that little detail, purely to add credence to your lie, right? Having a degree in art, and a very good eye for detail, I could also give a full description of each of the anti-social, nasty, heedless, drunken slatterns, just to prove I'm making it up too. That day in April, when I was trying not to shake my charity bucket, I saw simply loads of the borough's great and good, out doing their shopping in Tesco's. I rarely see them pushing/pulling their happy shoppers round the town centre. Unless that's rubbish too, and another made up fib. |

Re: HBC have taken away the benches from outside the market
I've just had a cracking idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Given the cop's reluctance to take down the tents outside St Pauls and the tents in Trafalgar Square, why doesn't Rindy go and stick his tent up outside the market hall? The cops can't move him on.After all, they didn't move on the dross and Rindy is a respected member of the community. LancsDave could send him down some buttys every day and I promise to bring him a Turkey leg on Christmas Day. Others could bring him a few pints from Wetherspoons - not very nice, I know, but better than nowt. Go for it, Rindy! ps...you might even get a Christmas card from Ken & Graham. |

Wonderful life-story and what a character. A rebel with a cause ...
As a Member of Parliament in her fifties looking backwards to the 1920s and considering the social conditions of the times and the circumstances of her own life she did not see in all honesty what else she could have done other than rebel: "... in sympathy with the spirit of those years I was possessed by a frenzy for change; and since a change, any change, could hardly be for the worse, it must inevitably be for the better." Wonder if she was a fan of Lawrence of Arabia - the film came out in the 60's. |

Re: HBC have taken away the benches from outside the market
Interesting issue from the council meeting this week.
Motion by Cllr Ken Moss who wants fixed penalty notices of up to £1,000 for dog fouling. Support from Labour colleagues, but currently top fine is £75 Cllr Clare Pritchard wants PCSOs to issue the fines Amazing that we can't enforce the issue of alchohol free zones in a small area like the town centre yet the police are going to trawl the borough looking for dogs crapping  |
Re: HBC have taken away the benches from outside the market
Spoke to a Market Hall trader yesterday, who used to grab five minutes rest on the benches.
He knew one of the benches was broken beyond repair, whilst being removed for this experiment. Not too chuffed, to put it mildly, when told the benches had been offered by the powers to be to some gypsies, who had then driven them away. Gone forever...but not forgotten. ;) |

a person who gets a bit rowdy celibrating christmas at the evening will be barred from town center both day and night and an alcholic dosser can swear, swig booze and dance round like a moron infront of children, the elderly and people trying to shop without fear of punishment ? Maybe this council thinks the best way to cut down on town center spending is to have no one visit it and have them go to places where they are wanted. if only we had a regular poster from the labour party to explain things nice and clear like the one who used to explain tory policies to us  |

Re: HBC have taken away the benches from outside the market
It will make a change to see a copper anywhere near the town centre when and if they are needed. They are usually to busy hiding in vans, cars, police stations and the like to be of any use.Or picking on soft targets like the motorist or to be fair to them having their hands tied by red tape and time taken up by paperwork.

Re: HBC have taken away the benches from outside the market
I love a bench in a town centre, seeing weary shoppers taking a moments break, Why does everyone have to suffer because the council can't come up with a solution to the yobs, there should be something in place to help these unfortunate's perhaps one of the empty shops could be used as a mentoring unit for anyone causing a nuisance, and the general public could help observe the council's, social workers and police people skills and see how much their hands are tied dealing with society's misfits
