Don't think they got as far as my place Margaret, because I actually tried to get Virgin some time ago and they said they could install in my flat as there was no service available, can't remember it changing

I checked -
Virgin Media Packages From £6 - Compare Prices for April 2012

strange that they didn't cable there.

Well it says its available, but I certainly can't remember any upgrades round here, they went right past the end of Mallard Place in the nineties and I enquired about broadband within the last 4 years and they said no can do, strange very strange

Yes John, but that is very different to being able(physically) to monitor every visit to a website, every e-mail and mobile phone call/text message by every person who has internet facilities ........and done in real time. Now that would take some doing. I don't believe the resources exist to do it.........the hardware may exist, but it takes manpower to determine what is worth pursuing and what is not.

I think there is some of confusion here about how the new regulations will work.. the government will force all ISP's to store data of website visits, e.mail usage etc of everyone who uses the internet for at least 2 years.. on request this information will be given to various government agencies and maybe given to some private companies..no extra manpower is needed because the ISP's to do all the work.

Margaret, it doesn't need massive resources of manpower- the hardware and its software do it for them and will highlight anyone who needs 'attention'.
Visiting certain websites, using certain words, phrases, names will make your activity become highlighted, they can then ask the ISP for full details.
To cut down on unnecessary work they can use combinations of all the above to increase their confidence in a good 'hit'.
I'm all for whatever it takes to improve our security but the mass surveillance of the whole population is going too far.
If it comes in I think there will be some very surprised innocent citizens getting 6am visits and needing new front doors!

I understand that the ISP's have to retain the information for two years, but I'm sure I read that the surveillance that was going to be used would access information about who was using what sites in 'real time'

I am aware that the surveillance agency will not be able to view the content of the communication....only that the communication exists.
If it is something that is thought to be a security risk, then further legal powers will have to be exercised to view the communication.

Margaret Pilkington 04-04-2012 20:13

Re: Government Spy Program will Monitor you!

OK Gordon....the software may pull up the use of phrases/combinations of phrases to ensure an 'intelligent' hit....but once that is done, then surely it needs a human being to sift through the communication to determine whether some wrong doing is being planned.

I think that's about right.. but if a user is targeted it's is easy to access data about what sites and the e.mails sent/recieved.. a child could do it.

Re: Government Spy Program will Monitor you!

They might be able to access the sites that have been used, but will not be able to access the actual communication....to see what the conversation was about.

If a person is suspected of some wrong doing then an intercept warrant needs to be used to get the content of the communication.....and the Home Secretary has to sign such a warrant. This is in line with the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act of 2000(RIPA).

If someone is really serious about internet anonymity, then there is a company called TOR who manufacture an internet anonymity shield. Apparently these sell well in countries known for repressive government practices(like China).

Anyway these surveillance proposals have now been delayed. Nick Clegg(spit) has said that they are only draft proposals....and that civil rights groups will be given access to the plans before any decisions are made. I bet that fills us all with confidence

Just like when every professional medical body were given access to the plans to privatise the NHS, they all said no.. but the this government overuled them all.

Re: Government Spy Program will Monitor you!

it may sound like paranoia but if i can get an app for an android phone that is undectectable by its owner and have copies of their text messages sent directly to my phone just imagine what the government can get up to.Only this week on watchdog they showed how someone with a android phone running an application can stand next to you for 3 seconds and get all the information from these new pinless debit cards. Also Android phones and i-phones have been used to circumvent security on the ps3

Its pretty clever what can be done but in an age where 14 year olds are able to hack the most advanced security the government are idiots if they think its a good idea to have a massive computer database of everyones activity and details it would be number 1 target for hackers and they would beat it.

Mind you even with teh best security some dumb MP will probably leave a laptop or dvd on a train with all the security details on ;)

PS:

the best computer hackers dont go to jail when caught they end up getting highly paid jobs in the FBI or other government agencies and then the next batch of hackers sets about beating them. Its a never ending cycle as the authorities get better so do the hackers. The only safe computer is a computer that isnt connected to teh internet and padlocked to your desk lol.As soon as you plug in that ethernet cable or wireless card you are at risk its just a matter of making yourself a harder target so the hackers move onto someone that hasnt been as carefull.

I am not a member of any party but if was to be it would be UKIP

All voting does is make the masses think they can make a change through voting .. when in reality nothing ever changes.

The main reason I would UKIP is that they want out of the EU

Anyone want to do something about this then have a go with the information below! :alright:

Dear sir/madam,
The government snooping plan, the "Communications Capabilities Development Programme" is rolling ahead: the story broke in the Sunday Telegraph, and then last week in the Sunday Times. This time, the government reacted by pretending that the system will be limited and designed merely to maintain their current abilities.

ORG, LSE, Privacy International, Big Brother Watch and the Foundation for Information Policy Research have teamed up to provide an afternoon (19th April) of debate and campaigning, called Scrambling for Safety, next Thursday afternoon. David Davis MP (TBC) and Shami Chaktrabati of Liberty will be speaking, alongside commercial and police representatives.

Scrambling for Safety 2012

The CCDP leaks are trailing two very different systems. The first would involve ISPs intercepting your webmail, social media and forum chat, and storing the data showing who you talk to.

The second proposal would allow the police to gain access to the same "communications data" (who you talk to, and when) from big web companies. They would be able to get this data without a warrant, just by police officer simply signing a form, just as they do for phone bills today.

We want to tease out just how unregulated and instrusive both of these plans are, and find ways to campaign to stop them. Please come along:

Scrambling for Safety 2012

You can also write a personal email to your MP:

Write to your MP today
Let them know about the event!

Hope to see you there,
Jim Killock, Executive Director, Open Rights Group

Now that's a quandary for the judiciary....

Official Secrets Act vs Public Disclosure Act, or treason vs whistleblowing..

Is it possible that she remains free because she is talking complete and utter tripe, and since she is not actually relating any secrets, cannot be prosecuted for breaking the Official Secrets Act?

Then again she is one of the nutjobs that claim Diana was assassinated, 9/11 was a Mossad job, the Illuminati are to blame for the current economic crisis, she's a mate of David Icke, thinks CCTV is big brother, advocates decriminalisation of drugs and is now described by the Gurniad, which she currently writes for, as an 'international public speaker'.

Of course this is probably all MI5 misinformation

There is a decent fiction novel where Diana was assassinated. "The accident man" the people behind it in the story was manufacturers of landmine. Makes for interesting thought. Fiction or not.

I lean towards the possibility that its possible she was actually assassinated. But to hear David Icke's version makes the mind melt

Home Secretary Theresa May is planning to pass legislation which will mean all internet use - e-mails and text messages are stored and possibly will be accessible to local Councils and other agency's who want to know your secrets!;)

BBC News - Draft Communications Data Bill to be redrafted - No 10

No 10 says the PM remains committed to giving police and security services new powers to monitor internet activity, despite criticism of current plans.
The prime minister's spokesman said he accepted the criticism from MPs and peers of the draft Communications Data Bill and would re-write it.
Deputy PM Nick Clegg had threatened to block it unless there was a "rethink".

Won't happen dullard, never heard of the data protection act, or does it not apply to jockland, and their gas powered computer system, think you'll find, if you care to look that is, that there was more privatisation under the last incumbents of Downing Street and has added billions of pounds on the NHS Trusts budgets for years and years to come, than ever under this coalition government, ;)

I don't think so Jay, just think of the cost of the equipment and space needed to store emails, and for what purpose, it would be like Royal Mail keeping a copy of every letter ever sent, tons and tons of paper & hundreds of warehouses.

they are never gone iv recovered files after low level format, repartitioning and every other method of cleaning a hard drive

if you ever throw a computer away and wantto be sure no one gets your data take out your hard drive and drill it or oblitorate it with a hammer or use a strong magnetic force to corrupt the drive

New Police Software can track you round the Internet! 2 types one called RIOT and the other GEOTIME!

'Google for spies' software mines social networks to track users' movements and could even predict what you'll do next | Mail Online

Why would even a Yank wear a speed camera- they're heavy, aren't they?

I never said that, jaysay! I may have thought it but 'I couldn't possibly comment'.
I've always thought your spelling was a lesson to us all.

we are all caught on CCTV when ever we go out, our cars have ANPR cameras looking at them, if you use your credit/debit card you are traceable as are all your bank transactions. Cellphones note your whereabouts and even Tesco are at it with their clubcard.
If you really believe that your emails/phone calls/texts have not been intercepted and monitored by now, you must be very naive.
However if you think of the sheer number of telephone calls, texts and the vast number of emails made per day then you would realise that storing them all, let alone filtering though and reading/listening to them would be a near impossible task. Still it gives the Daily Mail something to write about.

No I realised it a long time ago mate - so is it a crime to point things out now - or am I meant to be able to read your thoughts?

What now becomes really subversive is to resort to carrier pigeons.
