Meaningless comments

A poster on a recent thread accused me of making a meaningless comment and suggested I was becoming a nuisance. Along with other derogatory comments which I will not repeat he also suggested that he was not the only one that thinks I am chipping in with meaningless comments on several threads on here.

I take offence at these remarks and would like to invite anyone who feels what he said to be true to let me know, either by commenting on this thread or by pm.

I was not aware that Accrington Web set any standards for the meaningfulness or otherwise of posts but have always tried to make a positive contribution even if it is only with a lighthearted comment.

I can think of several people who in my opinion make meaningless posts but I would not wish to stop them commenting.

If anyone feels strongly enough about my posts they could always put me on ignore but then they run the risk of losing a gem if I ever do manage to make sense.

There comes a time when you stop taking it as banter, whether directed at oneself or others, and start to take offence. That time has come.

It's especially offensive when it's directed at the female sex, as it usually is.

Sue, I haven't noticed any meaningless comments from you(maybe that is because you often say what I am thinking :D)....I have noticed some from other posters though.
Everyone has a right to express an opinion...no matter what others think.

I know it won't be any good telling you to take no notice.....when we are offended, then we are offended(been there...done it).
Maybe the person who made the comments is having a tough time too and thinks it is alright to have a 'pop' at you. Feel sorry for them...they have nothing better to occupy themselves with.

Susie, I've been upset a couple of times on here, but now I couldn't care less. There are far more caring people on here than others who, hiding behind a name, like to take a snap. Just ignore them and their posts. Don't give them the satisfaction of being noticed.

If that is so then they have a tough time 24/7 365 days a year. It never stops, to all sorts of people, and I think they think they are being funny.

Perhaps they would like to know of the tough time I am having at the moment.

Oh, gosh!

There was me thinking you gave tit for tat!

As for my fangs? Not as sharp as they used to be, I'm afraid, the NHS refuse to sharpen them anymore and I can't afford to go private.

So the best I can offer is slightly more than a bruise left by a love bite.

I didn't know who you were talking about, until I did as you suggested, and read through your recent posts.

Things do get heated on here.

Politics, religion...sport.

Though suprisingly the biggest bitchfest always happens in local history threads.

Take no heed.

Your opinion is as valid as anyone else's on here.

In 'real life' the person concerned is an intelligent, helpful, gentleman.

Plus, he's never had a go at me...so far.

Thank you David. I was always taught to be polite to my elders but it doesn't seem to work the other way with this person. When one of them comes out with comments like I have had, I have to respond even though I try restraint.

By the way hope the docs have managed to sort you out and you are beginning to feel better.

As with the majority of my posts, the above was typed whilst I wore a wry smile, I have to be very careful with my smiley faces, surely like a multi produced photo copy, they become meaningless the more often they are used?

You sound upset Susie, but I wouldn't take it to heart, I did think the comment made about you was harsh. From my experience, posting online isn't like real life, youre adding your comments, opinions and feelings to the views of other people who might well have other stuff going on in their lives and might choose to vent their feelings on faceless names or might feel particularly strongly about a subject. I don't think that anything I've seen that you've posted could possibly be seen as either a nuisance or meaningless, in fact I've found some of your posts to be very interesting.
I'm relatively new to this posting online business and it's taken me a while not to be offended by other people's replies (just refer to the previous lap dancing thread if you want to!)

Of course you can take umbrage with the rest of us, but the posts led me to believe that this comment was aimed at women, rather than men....anyway, I am pretty sure you know how to report a post, should the need arise.

Yes the comments were harsh, and he does it all the time, especially to women, which really bugs me. He may be a gentleman in real life but that is not excuse for being so rude online. I have no wish to meet him to find out.

Anyway Anne, thanks for your kind words about my posts, they are much appreciated.

:signthis:Well this may have been a meaningless thread but it's successfully passed a Saturday afternoon and evening. Lots of posts, with some interesting comments, and no one has told me to go away or shut up.

Thank you all for your support. :thankya:

Of course the antis may communicate by pm, being reluctant to show their faces on here... :hidewall: :tongueout:

Hi Susie

Found the offensive post and i must admit I always find his responses blunt to say the least

He's never in the wrong and although he clearly has a wealth of local history knowledge he has a very unfortunate manner and I would have hoped for a man of mature years he could show more respect to all sections of Accyweb

keep posting

Please don't be horrible to other people, I really enjoy your local history expertise and it doesn't do you justice to be unpleasant and upset people who don't know you.

I'm not being horrible just telling it as how I see it, she's coming across as an attention seeker, been playing the sympathy card all day, if its sympathy you seek, you'll find it in the dictionary between Sh1t & syphilus.
I now I'm a bad tempered old bu**er, and I admit it, some need to take their rose tinted specs off & have a good look at their selves. As for other peoples opinion of me I don't give a monkeys, think what you like.
If all this gets me banned, then great, I'll be able to get on with other stuff thats backing up.

This is a storm in a teacup that's been blown out of all proportion. There are far worse comments made about other members on other threads. Also, a thread started that is specifically aimed against another member is wrong in my opinion.

Re: Meaningless comments

Dearest Susie123,

Though I am coming late into this thread, I will if I may, make the following observations.

If you have something to say that you think is worth saying, say it.

If you can illustrate or expand upon anothers' opinion, do so.

If you feel an overinflated ego requires a sharp word as a corrective, then pop it.

Let common sense and decency be your guide and you will not go far wrong.

But remember, you cannot hope to please all the people, all of the time, nor should you try to; that way lies madness and disappointment.

In the final analysis and at the end of the day, when all things are added up and the fat lady has warbled her silly head off, you are you. Your comments, quips, illustrations and opinions are uniquely yours and you have as much right to post them as anyone else.

By the same measure, anyone else has an equal right to criticise, belittle, satirise, ridicule or disagree with whatever you post. This is called give and take, and is a fundamental requirement of any democratically inspired debate.

If I disagree with something that you have posted I will say so and explain why. You then have the opportunity to defend your position by further explanation with the hope (usually forlorn - but that's half the fun) of changing my opinion. And so it goes on, back and forth, until one or other of us retires exhausted from the debate.

The value of a forum for debate lies in the ability it affords us to examine what we believe. It enables us to hone our skills in the marshalling of facts to support or challenge an argument and the use of language to express our line of thinking.

It would be a very poor debate indeed if any of us felt that we must self-censor for fear of causing offence; even though a certain amount of that is necessary if we are to remain within the law.

In short, if you feel that you are being targetted for unfair or discriminatory criticism you can always appeal to the moderators for guidance.

I hope this helps:)

I have now found what you considered to be a meaningless post.
I cannot see how you considered it to be meaningless...so will that make me a deluded female too?
Neither can I see where other people think the same as you Retlaw...should I go to specsavers?
Would the rose tinted specs work for me too?

And if you have stuff backed up, shouldn't you be doing that instead of this?
I appreciate your considered thoughts on my questions.

I have had more than the usual serving of flack directed at me on here.

I have never reported any of it because it needed to stay on show so that the perpetrator's personality could remain on show - the good, bad and the downright ugly!

How else would you learn who to avoid and who to be empathic with?

When the flack began I too was upset and used the ignore feature, which gave some respite whilst I reviewed my attitude towards the people who did it.

Now I see the flack for what it is - their natural defensive reaction attempting to maintain their lifetime conditioned way of thinking.

Jay, giving some stick back is what I have done in the past. This time he went too far. I could not take it. In my opinion people who do put up with it only make it easier for the perpetrator to carry on.

We can disagree with people without being rude and offensive. That is the point.

Mick I apologise if i have not gone about things in the correct way.

I did however find the thread helpful in seeing what other members had to say.

I think it is now time to draw a line under this and move on. I am grateful to all who took the time to post, and it has done my karma a world of good!

Thanks Mick for pointing me in the right direction for any future problems
