Why ? They are trespassing as far as I can see & as such the plod on reports from the owners should be moving the gyps along, it's that simple. The longer they are allowed to stay the more problems & infractions will occur furthering the hostility felt towards them, they're their own worst enemies.

That said they then have the neck to whine & bleat about being persecuted & victimised, then some self important whiny bleeding heart has been/wanna be celeb will start mithering on about the "poor misunderstood gyps".

They do it to themselves, "my big fat gypo whatever" I've far to much self respect than to view this cobblers & as to the company responsible for actively encouraging these creatures ..... they should be strung up !

Between the gyps parading themselves in front of the cameras & the producers they're certainly reinforcing the stereotypical portrayal of how most folk see the gyp !

Dave, I wasn't talking about what you've just said, I was remembering all that stick that was generated not too long ago when we we were talking about whether we could use the p word or not - as I had mentioned them having to be close to a source of income (know what I mean?) didn't want to go too much further.

Trespass is a tricky one in English law - not usually a police matter, though in some cases it is a crime.

There's nothing negligent or accidental about parking a dozen caravans, wagons & cars on the forecourt of a business ! Blatant disregard & disrespect in my view & they'll get away with it because ............. they'll play the victim/racist card should anyone say anything.

As to the P word, although folk can't actually use it, don't stop 'em thinking it.

I attended the "encampment" yesterday morning with the Police, as it's not HBC land I couldn't ask the Police to move them. I found the owner of the land and they asked the police to move them. They were moved today by the Police and were escorted from the Borough. It's a continuous problem and I'd say that I spend probably a third of my time dealing with this problem. We have more permenant pitches (90) in Hyndburn than there are in the whole of Cumbria BUT the majority of the time they cause us little problem. It's the Illegal Encampments that cause the probloems and cost us lots to remove them and clean up after them. It absolutely INFURIATES me and I'm proud to say that we have the time for removal of these sites on HBC land down to an absolute minimum (less than a week in the majority of cases). Its harder when thye land is owned by LCC as it's their legal department who deal with the eviction, but irritatingly, HBC have to pay the clean up cost. No easy answers but I would like HBC to have the same legal powers as private landowners to remove these encampments and I'm lobbying the government HARD to get some help for boroughs like us

thank you Clare for the update...and well done for getting them moved on so sharply.
I hope you are successful in lobbying the government, to get some help to continue the work that you do.

Had a look at the site this afternoon, and it was at the time not that bad, there was the usual black bags with rubbish in, a gas canister, and odds and sods of rubbish. It could have been worse, but as they only had a couple of days there I suppose they didn't have time to generate a lot of rubbish.

simple solution, take the van keys, they cant earn money and will beg to get them back, give them back when they have hitched up the caravan and picked up their rubbish, escort them to Heysham and stick them on a ferry after draining their red diesel from thier tanks
