Wow! That must mean 'Officers only, no other ranks'.

The medal mentions the Town of Campobasso in Southern Italy (see Wikipedia) which was the scene of heavy fighting between German and Canadian troops in October and November 1943.

All well & good, but the date on the "Coin" is 1911, so I don't think that has any bearing, more likely some kind of sporting award I'd think. :idunno:

I think it is just to mark the centenary of Campobasso being given the status of Province. The government system here is basically as follows: Municipalities, Provinces, Regions, Parliament, The Senate.

Thanks to everyone for their input.I went to the medal shop on Abbey Street this morning and he thought it was a commemorative medal worth about £10

Spot on. The 1911 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica confirms that the Province was given its independence in 1811.
Frank - put it on eBay. Somebody from Campobasso might be interested.

I think you are right Balbus. I imagine an Italian collector would buy it - all it needs are a few people interested and you might make more than a tenner in the end! If there's no sentimental attachment -FLOG IT! :D
