Re: That's HOT

Funnily enough, the weather forecasters are saying it's the severe cold in Canada and USA which is causing our wet and windy weather. Even though they're 3000 miles apart, the temperature difference is messing with the Jet Stream and creating one low pressure after another. Wet, wet ,wet (and windy) here till end Feb, so cold, cold, cold in Canada and USA?

Yes, I see what you mean. But I like this one because it's light. I've got a jeezley big metal one, but it gets tiring trying to heft it as well as the snow. Today we used our little electric powered snow blower. It deals with the deep stuff, leaving me to finish up with my little plastic shovel.
I've just been on real time chat with a friend who's in Barbados right now. I said think of what you're missing - it's light and fluffy, bright and sparkling. I don't think she took that thought on board. :)

Had another couple of hot spells here in sunny South Australia (actually had nothing else but hot spells for the past few weeks) with more to come apparently. Should be about 42 tomorrow and continuing in the high 30's and into 40 again next week.

On a serious note though I do feel so sorry for all the people who are being affected by the awful fires raging in parts of South Australia and Victoria. Absolutely dreadful situations - and the worst part of it is that arson is the cause of more than a few of them. Deliberately lighting fires that have the potential to cause loss of life, not to mention property, is the lowest of the low.

The arsonists are out to destroy while so many courageous people put their lives at risk to fight the fires. Much property has been destroyed, thankfully no lives have been lost up to now in this latest lot of fires - lets hope this continues to be the case.

This morning I drove by a half dozen or so youngsters waiting for their school bus. They ranged in ages from 7 to maybe 10. Every one of them were sitting in the hard, frozen snow bank playing about. Their knapsacks were left on the sidewalk, it was minus 18 degrees C, minus 30 with the windchill, and there they were, boys and girls, messing about in the snow. Granted, they all were wearing snow suits and well kitted out with hats and mitts. But I thought, they are true Canadians, not like me. I feel like such a wimp! Bring on Spring, I say.

Usually, winter and I get along quite well ... after all I spent 18 years in Saskatchewan ... (I'm still a die-hard fan of the Sakskatchewan Roughriders:alright:) I've woken up to temps of -50+ in Ile-a-la-Crosse, worked on the rigs in Northern Alberta, driven the ice road across Lake Athabasca, and curled on natural ice at -30. But this winter has been relentlessly rotten, just downright nasty, even though the kids love it. But the signs of spring are there ... the Jays played the Phillies in the Grapefruit League yesterday:D Winter clothing is on sale at Trailhead. The potholes are all over the damned streets. Spring will be here soon ... but, according to Environment Canada, don't hold your breath ... March is shaping up to be colder than usual.;)

Thanks for the encouraging words, Eric. I too am trying really hard to see positive signs! I did hear sparrows chirping on the roof of a store (does that count?). But yes, I hear March isn't starting out too good. (I remember in years gone by, sunbathing on the patio for March break! Ok, that was maybe 35 years ago, I know better than to sunbathe now :) )

Hi Eric - just to rub it in, we're having lovely weather here in South Australia - in the mid-20's and low 30's.

Unfortunately haven't been able to go out much to enjoy it as have been nursing sick husband, who is now much improved thank goodness - second (very sudden) attack of pneumonia in 6 months. Hope your weather improves soon.

Hey ... it's up to -9:alright: There are only 4 weeks left in the regular NHL season ... Baseball will start soon (the Grapefruit League play has been going on for a couple of weeks) ... local garages are having sales on winter tires ... Trailhead has sales on winter coats and boots (wise shoppers take advantage of these deals, working on the principle that there is a good chance winter will be back in a few months.) So the signs of spring are all there. Sorry to hear you get stuck with Halifax, Yorkshire; Halifax, Nova Scotia is a great city.

Glad you like the Dickinson poem ... In my opinion, no poet, of any age or period comes up with more striking images than she does. Here's my favorite: "The clouds, like listless elephants,/Horizons straggled down."

Well, this will be my first foray to Halifax for many a long year(more than 40 but less than 50)...so this visit will be a 'recce'. Well, I suppose you guys down under are moving into fall. Hope it will be more pleasant for you. Here in up over winter just won't let go. The maritime provinces are really suffering, as are the folks out west, who are still deep in the freezer.

Oh, I feel for those folk. I hate snow...and fortunately this winter we have had very little white stuff...and what we had had been mainly hail or frost.
A winter that has been as bitter and prolonged, must be very hard to live with....except there is not much alternative.

At the present time the weather is still pleasant here in South Australia, around the high 20’s and low 30’s during the day – but a bit chilly overnight (around the 15 degrees).

I don’t enjoy the colder weather, so not really relishing the thought of winter, but will just have to grin and bear it and make the most of every day whatever it is. At my time of life I can’t afford to wish my time away until next summer!!!! Oops!

The old man has gone off to play golf at the local club which is just a couple of streets away. Went at 6.30 this morning, still dark. Plays the game with a group of other grumpy old men. He’s not keen on the cold either – already wearing warmer clothing – have no idea what he’ll do when the weather gets really cold. Maybe hibernate….
