That's HOT

Spare a thought for the citizens of Adelaide and Melbourne today.
Adelaide 46 celcius Melbourne 44 celcius
I note that London is gonna maybe hit 10 celcius

re: That's HOT

Yup! It is a tad warm here in good old Adelaide. Should reach around 46 today, as it did yesterday, but down to 40 tomorrow. Cooler on the weekend - around 28. I don't mind the heat, after all it is summer in Australia and you have to expect it - but you also have to be sensible when it gets so hot.
For instance, not going to do a 10 km jog this morning - mind you, I NEVER do a 10 km jog anyway...
Very sad - there are a lot of fires in the State, causing untold damage. Some 300 were burning the other day - mostly caused by lightning strikes. Then there's the ones that are deliberately started - a side to human nature that is beyond understanding.

Update on our weather. Out of curiosity I put a thermometer on a table in the back garden – right out in the sun. It hit 64 degrees! Tried the front garden – again admittedly in the sun and on the ground – this time 56 degrees. Presently it’s 60 on our back doorstep.

Of course that’s ground temperature not air temperature – which is currently 44 degrees…..
..…by the way we’re presently trying an experiment – if an egg will cook on a tin plate which has been placed on the doorstep. Nothing better to do today, or maybe the sun has addled our brains - wouldn't take much.

Still experiencing a heat-wave here - though apparently a cooler change is on the way. Some dreadful, devastating fires burning - so much damage. Lost lives, loss of property, especially in the more rural areas. The fire fighters (many of them volunteers) are doing a magnificent job in horrendous conditions. They put themselves in danger to help others.

People talk about sporting heroes - that's a load of hogwash, these firefighters are what true heroes are made of.

And it's still snowing here;) I always thought that it is much easier to handle the intense cold than the intense heat. After all, one can always bundle up, or cuddle ... but I've never heard of bundling down:D

Re: That's HOT

Can understand what you mean Eric, but I would still rather have the hot than the cold - maybe not quite the intense heat we have been having, because of the problems it causes, but it is so enjoyable when it's in the 20's and 30's.

I don't think I could stand the extreme cold that you get - I don't even like our cold weather that much.

Still, as long as we wake up every morning who cares what the weather is......

Me, I'm all done ... looks like the snow is gone for a couple of days:alright: ... downside is that it's going to get bloody cold again:mad: Ah well, spring is just around the corner ... I just wish that the corner wasn't so bleeping far away. But now that I'm all done shovelling, I can relax with a mug of hot choc laced with Fireball, and a home rolled organic cigarette. It makes a beautiful picture, Eric, but you can keep that weather - not my cup-of-tea. I still remember the ice and snow when growing up in Lancashire. Oh! the pain of fingers thawing out and all that....but have to admit I also had lots of fun as a kid playing in the snow - making the most of it, sledging down the slopes, snowballing - almost compensated the other side of it. Memories!!!! Kids are resilient - don't think I could hack it now, and certainly not as severe as you have it.

Still you have to learn to adjust and cope - sounds like you do both these things admirably, I love the way you relax - should be more of it......

By the way, I think your picture would make a nice postcard - but as far as I'm concerned that's the place it belongs......

Canadians are good at coping with winter ... one might not like it all that much, but, like it or not, you know it's coming. And there are lots of neat ways of staying warm. Here's one: the boys from Calgary and Vancouver warming up for a hockey game. This all broke out at the opening face off. Just the lads getting in the mood for a good game of hockey.:alright:

I agree with you Dotti, the snow is better on postcards. Still, as I was shovelling the driveway today, I saw how pretty it looked, sparkling in the sun. Yup ... when the snow left and the sun came out, it sure was beautiful. I have a bird feeder, and the tree near it was covered in sparrows ... they were too busy fluffing out to do much singing;) A couple of them also provided nice snacks for a hawk that has been hanging around the neighbourhood. I had some shopping to do; so, I walked up to the local Tigre Geant and the El Cabo ... all kinds of people out walking, well bundled of course.:D Everyone seemed cheerful ... calling out things like, "Nice day, eh." (Go figure, eh:)), and "Cold enough fer ya". Extreme winter weather might be a pain in the ass; but we handle it ... 'cause we're Canadians, eh.:alright:

Day after day of temps in the mid forties? I don't think I would like that. It's going to be at best -30 tonite. But I'll put on my winter coat, wear my mad trapper hat ... oh, and long johns:D ... and I'll be nice and comfy when the dogs take me for a walk. But at 40 plus, how do you get comfy:confused:

I think the Aussies have it tougher than we do.

dotti34 20-01-2014 23:15

Re: That's HOT

How do we do it? - same as you, Eric, we handle it as best we can. It passes. Anyway it is lovely right now in the Adelaide area - around the 30 mark. It was only in the 40's for a few days.

Just wish in the heat-wave that people wouldn't keep saying that it's hot, like you don't know it is - of course it's bleeding hot - get over it and keep on keeping on.

Mind you, I think we are bringing up a generation of wimps who wouldn't have survived had they lived in the time of the pioneers and had to put up with conditions as they were then - and in the scheme of things, when you think of it, that's not that long ago.

I remember that ... now that was HOT:D It sure sharpened up the old clog irons ... remember cutting myself badly one time ... problem is that it wore out the clog irons real quick; and in those tough times new irons were quite a drain on the old family budget ... the punishment I got for wearing them out too quickly was to have rubber ones put on. Oh, the shame of it, the embarassment:o I can't remember the name of the clogger who made mine ... he had his shop on Barnes St., up on the left hand side towards the Square, near the chemist's shop ... Even though I can't remember the name, I can remember how it looked, and the smell of the wood and the leather.

How's your weather now, Eric and Turtle? Hope it's on the improve. Also hope all of you in the UK are enjoying a bit better weather than you have been having.
Here in good old South Australia we are facing another week or so of predicted high temperatures - around the 40 mark each day.
Still it is summer - so it's more-or-less what we can expect.

Hi Dotti, thanks for asking. It's not great over here - minus 15 Celsius and a just a bit of snow falling at the moment, but it's blowing sideways. They're telling us that this is the worst winter in decades for these parts, and I'm starting to believe them! We expect winter to be like this, but by the end of January, for me it's wearing a bit thin. I think the hardest part is knowing that before you go out, you spend maybe 5 minutes getting all your cold weather clobber on (toque, double gloves, boots, parka, scarf etc.) Then you have to dig a path to your car and shovel the driveway (in my case I do my elderly neighbour's driveway too). Then because hubby has his pride-and-joy-convertible-summer-driving-only car in the garage, I have to get all the snow off the car left in the driveway before warming it up enough to drive away. And that's hoping the roads have been ploughed, at least enough that I can make it up the many hills in my area. We always study the weather reports before making any long trips in winter, as getting stuck or worse could be disastrous. I think you get the idea!
While 40 degree temps. are a little extreme for me, I'm sure you too have to plan your outings but from the reverse perspective.

Re: That's HOT

It's surprising how we all manage to get through the extremes. Bit tough here today though for the kids going back to school after the long summer break, especially the little ones just starting school and pre-school for the first time.
I would say that most schools here are air-conditioned now, it's just the journey getting there and especially getting back home again in the heat of the day that will be the challenge.
Things have changed a lot over the years. When my oldest son was in Junior School (a lot of years ago now) the classroom didn't have a/c - not even a fan - and when it was hot his teacher would tell the students to take off their shoes and socks, she would throw water on the wooden floor and tell them to walk about on it - and that was the way they cooled off!!!!
Children are very resilient - they'll cope, it's the adults who do the most complaining.

I do feel for the firefighters - these brave men and women, many of whom are volunteers, are on stand-by, red alert. Total fire bans throughout the State. Extreme fire danger in many areas - catastrophic in some (this being the highest category).

So that is definitely a section of the community hoping for a cooler change.

Bit different here in god's country ... we've had quite a few days when exposed flesh freezes in about 10 minutes. But the kids bundle up and head out for school. My husband and I spent a number of years wintering(our winter - not yours) in Oz. We would put plastic juice bottles in the freezer to take to bed with us to stay cool enough to sleep...and put damp socks in the fridge and put them on before going to bed...they were dry by morning.
The house we stayed in had no aircon back then(80's).

Had to smile when I read this, Margaret. Brought back memories of some of the things we did to keep the kids cool in the heat. We didn't have air-con either (nor fans for a long time - but fans only circulate the warm/hot air anyway).

One thing I used to do - and which you reminded me about - was, while they were cooling off under the shower, I would put their clothes in the fridge or freezer so they were nice and cold when they put them on (though not for long!).

Sometimes slept outdoors - could then, wouldn't risk it now though.
Surprising how you get through.

It's about 30 below right now but I'm nice and toasty:D And when I go for my dog walk, I'll put on my spook toque, hitch up my long johns, pull on my boots, put on my winter coat, and I'll be comfortable. I still think that the cold and snow, even as rough it has been this winter, is much easier to deal with than the heat ... and we do get our fair share of that in summer, although it is always a little cooler by the lake. If it weren't for the [deleted] shovelling, I'd be a happy mother.;):D

From what I read, parts of Australia are about to be hit by another heat wave. The winter olympics begin on February 7. So you could always crank up the AC, turn on the big screen, grab a cold brewskie, and watch the Canadians clean up on the medals.:Banane49::alright:

Seems like we are going to have a break from the deep freeze this weekend ... Up to about -5 ... shorts and t-shirt weather:D

Moose tastes a lot like deer:D But it does depend on the age of the animal and how quickly it bled out ... usually strong tasting, with a hint of horse:eek: ... kinda like a cross between bison and elk, if that helps.

And "yes", believe it or not, I have tasted kangaroo. One can get it in Kingston at a great butchers, "The Pig and Olive" owned by Aussie Al, who comes from down under and, by the by, prefers up over (that's us).;) He's a real butcher ... none of that supermarket junk that is little better than shoe leather.

We had a winter like that a couple of years back ... I and a buddy of mine went for a ride on Christmas day ... not on the Harley, but on a Yammahammer 650, 1978 vintage ... nice bike, for jap scrap.:D On the bright side, all this snow should bring up the water level on the Great Lakes ... and, it's good for the farmers.

Oh, and it's still snowing ... heavy squalls off the lake, with high winds and temps around -20.

Last year we took the convertible for a run on New Years Eve - top up, of course! Based on that experience we decided to keep the battery in it this year, and run it every couple of weeks to keep the oil flowing and the tires round. But so far, we've had to back it's bum end out of the garage, and run the engine a while. Can't wait til the summer comes, and the weather is nice and HOT! (also an attempt to keep on thread :)

Re: That's HOT

Have never tasted bison or elk, Eric, but I can understand now what moose tastes like. Thought it might be something like that.

Kangaroo tail soup is very tasty - but there's a bit of preparation to do with the tail before you can use it (apart from cutting it off - thought I'd get that one in first!!!). I think the steak tastes best when it's marinated for a while before cooking. Have tried emu steak - I didn't like it but him indoors did.

Isn't it strange - the kangaroo is on our coat-of-arms and yet to farmers it's a pest. We skin it and we eat it (or use it for pet food). To some people here Ned Kelly is a folk hero - though he was a bushranger, and a lot of people think that we should have Waltzing Matilda as our National Anthem. As you probably know, Waltzing Matilda is about a swagman who stole a sheep to eat - though probably through necessity, poor man.....

......and, irrespective of my second paragraph, I do like animals - even though I eat some of them!!!!!

I don't like Kangaroo meat at all.
We went to Kings Canyon and had an overnight stay......the restaurant at the resort had a buffet meal on. My husband got a bit of Kangaroo meat and put it on my plate....it had only been shown a flame(and I think it might have been one of those birthday cake candle
flames)...a good vet and an electric probe could have got the beast active again.
Croc......better thaan the 'roo, but not much....couldn't stomach the Emu.

But when some of you are talking -43 and some are talking +46 it's not surprising.

Turtle, Eric, what sort of heating systems and insulation do you have to cope with -43? I doubt if any system in the UK could deal with anywhere near that. And as it goes on so long aren't the heating bills crippling?
How do you stop your cars freezing up solid?

Dottie, the same but opposite- do you have air conditioning on all the time or do you eventually learn to live with it? What about the shopping centres etc.- are they all air conditioned?

We moan if it freezes at all and 2 inches of snow- the UK grinds to a halt. And 25 degrees in Summer- definitely a heat wave( but lots of cold beer needed so not all bad).

Hydro bills can be a little high, but homes are ususally well insulated ... Cars? No problem. Antifreeze good to -40, a decent battery, survival kit in the trunk if you are taking a long trip. I put a trickle charger on mine on the brutal cold nites. Out west, where it can get real cold for a long time, most cars have block heaters.

Hi Gordon, most newer houses have forced air, natural gas-burning furnaces. Newer homes have good insulation, and well sealed windows. Some folks chose to supplement this with a fireplace of some sort. Our basement was nasty and cold in winter before we got a gas fireplace down there! When the ice storm hit in December, that gas fireplace kept our whole house tolerably warm, as the furnace was not working (no electric power).
We also need central air conditioning for our hot summers. Yes, we Canucks are definitely weather obsessed. But that's because of the extremes we endure, I believe.

Re: That's HOT

Hi Gordon - re being weather-obsessed.

Just stating the facts as they are, personally I don't let it worry me, even though I have done a few postings on the subject on this thread which might make you think otherwise I really am not obsessed with it. Have to say though it does seem to be the topic of conversation with a lot of people, and certainly not helped by the media who keep pushing it at us just how hot it is - or is going to be.

Have learnt to get on with it and over it, no option really, but of course we have also learnt to be sensible in extremes. Especially now that we're old and somewhat decrepit. (Well he is at any rate - I'm just old). It's not for more than a few weeks anyway, if that even.

We do have some air-conditioning and a fan or two at our house, but in our case we don't have air-con throughout the place and we manage very well. Certainly don't spend my time sitting in front of the cool air, and things that have to be done are done as normal. Didn't used to have anything in the form of cooling and we coped very well.

When him indoors was a working man and (irrespective of what the experts keep telling us) it WAS as hot then, he worked out in the open in the heat, stripped to the waist - got lovely and brown, this was before people realised that sometimes the sun and getting a tan wasn't always as healthy as we had thought.

Shopping centres ARE air-conditioned and quite a number of people spend hours there because of it. As I dislike shopping intensely - and as I have too many things to do rather than waste my time wandering around such places - I'm not one of them.

We do have some lovely days weather-wise...it's worth the discomfort of a few of them.
