Re: New NHS Dentist

Thanks for that Janet.....I have not seen a dentist for 40years(shameful...I know, but I am phobic about dentists) and thought that I would probably never get on an NHS list.

Re: New NHS Dentist

All I can say is OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!! (( NO DENTISTS FOR ME PLEASE I AM WITH YOU ALL))))

Margaret Pilkington 06-01-2005 17:03

Re: New NHS Dentist

Oooh I thought it was only me who was phobic about dentists.......and my dental health is VERY POOR. Mine all stems back to the dental clinic on Cannon Street in Accrington......where you were sent from school......I was once held down by two very meaty dental nurses while the dentist filled a tooth and he drilled into a nerve,If I ever have nightmares there is alway a dentist in them.

WillowTheWhisp 06-01-2005 17:03

Re: New NHS Dentist

If you actually see a dentist on a regular basis it eliminates the "OUCH!"

Margaret Pilkington 06-01-2005 17:05

Re: New NHS Dentist

I used to wonder if either of those dental nurses had children.... and if they had, would they like them to be held down the way they held me down.....if it happened today I suppose I could sue...... but it is almost 50 years ago now.

Re: New NHS Dentist

ooo margret i was in the same position as you oo my i thought i was the only one , when i got home mum then decided NOT to let me go to clinic & we went to burys(now antley villas dentist) he was a shade better. still i did once concer my fear & went very regular, but now cant get a, NHS one so will give this new lot a go mmmm see you in the queue happen margret.

WillowTheWhisp 06-01-2005 17:13

Re: New NHS Dentist

I think those nightmares are a thing of the past. It's no wonder they put people off in the past but my dentist is brilliant. He's excellent with children and totally painless.

I still believe that prevention is better than cure, looking after your teeth, proper cleaning and regular check ups to avoid problems. I do have one problem with a broken tooth thanks to a certain pheasant and a bit of lead shot but that's another story. Anytime it causes me a problem I just go back and get it fixed again.

Margaret Pilkington 06-01-2005 17:18

Re: New NHS Dentist

I have always looked after my teeth well...... but age seems to have taken over....shrunken gums and enamel weakened and a few broken teeth...... which believe it or not I filed down with a diamond nail file because I was to scared to go to the dentist. And yes, times may have changed, but I only have to see the dentists chair and I faint.

Re: New NHS Dentist

I am truly ashamed of myself......I would rather have a baby than go to the dentist.

The old joke for dentist's is......Well madam please make your mind up, because I'll have to alter the position of the chair!

Re: New NHS Dentist

Oh Mez, i also went to Bury. All i can say is that Bury was to Dentists what Shipman was to GPs. He was terrible, i am lucky he hasn't left me with a fear of dentists. Just writing this brings back memories of the smell of that dentist (the actual building not the dentist himself,) enough to give me nightmares.

Re: New NHS Dentist

ive been the dentist once since baron left the ossy surgery and moved to the antley heard a lot of rumours he was sacked from the ossy one as they had endless complaints about him personally thought the bloke was evil and cant see how hes still working in the area

Re: New NHS Dentist

i used to take my g/daughter to him at antley, she had an accident when she was 14yrs & chipped a chunk off her front tooth, i asked him if he could cap it or something but he was very brusq (spelling) when he said no, then i noticed his hands were shaking & he would always wear a mask o frightening, needless to say she aint got a dentist now.

Re: New NHS Dentist

last time i needed a dentist i had chronic tooth ache late on a friday night , i rang the ossy clinic 24 hour emergency line to get an answering machine so tried the nhs one at blackburn infirmary they told me to contact my local one as theres nothing they could do so had to put up with it all night .I went straight to my own one in ossy first thing and they sorted it straight away about four hours later i received a call about my answering machine message id left on the supposed 24 hour line of which the main dentist from ossy then asked me to register with baron at antley which is a bit hypocritical as they fired him .He wasnt good enough to work for them yet it s perfectly ok to try and fob off there clients to him and even hes fully booked up now .How many people are without a dentist these days ?

Re: New NHS Dentist

Thanks for the info Janet.:) I have phoned this morning and had my details taken. It was pretty painless:D I haven't had a dentist since Mr Cookson retired and as much as I hate going to the dentist, I really can't bear the thought of my teeth being knackered. I have nice teeth and it took a lot of painful treatment as a child to get them that way. It is torturing me knowing that I have a big box of Thorntons Special Toffee in the kitchen which I daren't eat for fear of losing a filling and having no dentist to replace it.:D

Re: New NHS Dentist

Talking about Mr Bury at antley villa, i worked for him from 1968 till 1970, all i can say is YES he was a butcher, he took one of my teeth out soon after i started working for him, and i ended up seeing a specialist at BRI because he damaged my jaw bone, it used to lock it self and i had to force it open by pulling it.I had trouble with for many years, you could here it clicking when i opened and closed my mouth. Never again did i let him near my teeth i went to Lawsons instead. If it was to happen today then no doubt i would be able to sue.

Margaret Pilkington 07-01-2005 14:00

Re: New NHS Dentist

I haven't made that phone call yet...... but I have picked the phone up a couple of times and then freaked at the thought of letting some poor devil peer into the cavern of my mouth......I will be scared witless and so embarrassed at the state my teeth are in...... think they may all have to come out...... what a horror!

Margaret Pilkington 07-01-2005 14:02

Re: New NHS Dentist

I had a bad experience at Lawsons too.....in fact I think that was probably the LAST time I saw a dentist........EEEEEK

I have just been talking to my daughter and she says if I don't shape myself.....she will take matters into her hands and do it for me.......AND she says she will march me along to my appointments too(if they take me on) how scary is that???????

janet 07-01-2005 14:14

Re: New NHS Dentist

Margaret Pilkington 07-01-2005 14:23

Re: New NHS Dentist

oooh-er I have just done it ........and you won't believe this I am shaking like a leaf!
I don't know if that was from making the phone call or the threat from daughter!
I am going to go and have a cup of tea now to calm myself down and look for some self hypnosis tapes

Mez.....I have had mine for about a week......everytime I take it out to fill it in I get a fit of the vapours.....thinking about what I have let myself in for.
I will hold your hand if you go first! Wouldn't it be good if we COULD all go together.
Maybe I wouldn't be as bad.
