Monroes Rave Club

Just been told by my dad that Monroes nightclub Gt Harwood has been burned to the ground, someone has rammed the place with a car and set it on fire. Ian that owns Monroes has been geetting the club ready for reopening after a long court case with lancashire police.

Not that I wish to be rude mate but the place had no license for alcohol, operated under the pretence of being a club for younger people, was rife with drugs, had regular violent incidents and above all plays crap music (yes, crap i.e no talent whatsoever, if I compared hard house to television it would be a gay version of the teletubbies but I suppose that's beside the point).

What I'm trying to say is that Monroes was a "Chav" haven which encouraged idiots to run riot and take the ****, generally bringing the area down.

So as far as I'm concerned all the scum that went there can go back to drinking on street corners..

Well said, Wez....I don't think anyone had any illusions about what this establishment was. There is an argument that at least it kept the Riff-Raff (or should I say Chavs) in one place; now they'll be back on the street corners - hopefully, not yours or mine. However, allowing a place like that to continue - which, following the due process of the law would have happened - would simply have legitimised the criminal activity. Sometimes there is an argument for taking the law into your own hands.

I trust the Lancashire Constabulary will not be committing too many of it's scarce resources in investigating this incident.

Glad the place is gone.....it was a dive. And if the guy who owned it was not insured then it is sad, but ces't la vie....I'm sure he is not on the breadline anyway.

Re: Monroes Rave Club

they had to sell drugs at monroes to relieve the pain caused by the music

i remember when the police used to shut all roads into great harwood down to stop ravers getting there in the late 80s

we used to get scousers asking where monroes was and we would say were just on our way there m8 follow us and lead them on a wild goose chase and leave them lost over the tops of blackburn or haslingden somwhere lol

The thing that sickens me about this whole farrago is that the majority of people knew all about what was going on there, including the Police, but it seems to have escaped the attention of the Magistrature. Not for the first time, one wonders whether they inhabit the same planet as the rest of us!

Re: Monroes Rave Club

I know a lot of people these days call Monroe’s and quite rightly so due to its reputation for drugs. But back in 1990/91/92 the place was (banging) fantastic.
I and a few of my friends used to go to the set-end up shadsworth on weekends because the atmosphere amongst the people and the then new type of music was brilliant, never experienced any thing like it before in my life. The venue / scene became so popular that the set-end was no longer able to cope with the amount of people wanting to enter. So it was time to find a new venue.

At that time Monroe’s wasn’t doing very well with it’s weekend openings, I mean it was ok but it never really got busy ,sometimes it did but often it didn’t. Anyhow Ian and Simon the then managers of Monroe’s where approached by two or three of the DJ’s from set-end and told them that if they gave them a slot they could fill the place. So with a bit of disbelieve they agreed and gave them a Wednesday night.
I’m not joking now, but come that Wednesday night, I have never seen as many people in Monroe’s, it was unbelievable. The managers were so impressed by the turn out that they changed the Wednesday night to a Thursday night and then to Friday/Saturday nights. It was Banging. Hehe the club was full week after week, you even had to get there early if you wanted to get in, it was that popular. We never missed, it only cost £2 or £3 quid to get in and at that time the bar was open, the age group was mixed, young and old and I can honestly say (imo) that the majority of people who went were not using drugs, I imagine some people were as there was talk and whispers, but it really wasn’t that obvious then,
We eventually stopped going shortly after the bar lost its licence and the entrance fees shot up and I’ve no doubt some of the other followed suit thus eventually boiling down to the kids.

Thought it was. I used to go to Cloggers in the early 80s. It was worth travelling from Ossy for on a Friday and Sunday, there was nothing like it in Ossy. It was relatively innocent back then though and I certainly don't ever remember any drugs or anything dodgy at all. Used to love it!

I was up there Tuesday morning. I've no memories of Monroes at all, but I have plenty of Great Harwood Town Football Club, and the effect the fire has had on that club has been massive. It's ever so sad to see the ground in a state of total disrepair. I wonder if the fooball club will ever return to the ground. And do the people of Harwood even care? The clubs attendences suggest not. All very sad.
