'The exorcist' was banned because it made the mistake of involving children, violence, religion and sex in the same movie. A surefire combination to getting banned in those days.
And Bruce Campbell is God.
Anyone see Bubba Ho-Tep yet? Bruce as Elvis battling a cowboy mummy in a nursing home? :D

Lots of films were banned back then. I mean take the Texas Chainsaw Massacre for example, the film has hardly any actual gore or violence shown yet it was banned here for ages. All the stuff was implied and not shown. As for Evil Dead, I saw it once years ago. Its not that bad but I can see why back then it was banned.

Funnily enough, one of the things I found most offensive was the kids' programme on TV, The A Team.

It was full of violence, bombs, grenades, bullets flying, but in the end all the baddies were rounded up, slightly bruised, a little battered, but none the worse for virtually having World War III break out around them.

It wasn't the violence I objected to, it was the fact that it was violence without consequences - did a generation grow up thinking you could blast people with grenades and fire bullets at them, and nobody hurt? To me, that seemed far more worrying than them watching gory movies.

P.S. My daughter saw Deep Throat at a friend's house (nicked from her father's private store) at about 13, and couldn't see what all the fuss was about!

Some of the women were quite hot - I guess it would look a bit dated now, though!

Re: Evil Dead

The film Evil Dead was very much tongue in cheek. The problem in those days was the Campaign for the Moral Minority, led by Mary Whitehouse, tried to impose their views on the rest of society, and deny us the chance to make up our own minds.

An equally funny horror film from the same era is George Romero's zombie film from 1979, "Dawn of the Dead". Hell's Angels with pump-action shotguns versus zombies, in a shopping mall; funny as ... :D

I liked the new version but it didnt't have that cool 70's vibe that the original has going on.

SACRELIDGE!
Shawn of the Dead was a fantastic movie, but I really didn't think too much of the remake of Dawn of the Dead. A bit too over the top for its own good and it threw away the cynical pphilosophy of Romero's movies in favour of making a quick gore movie. Not that any movie with zombies in it can ever really be a bad movie, but I can't see how it's better than the original.
