Councillors' Allowances

Page 7 of this week's Accrington Observer reports that Hyndburn's 36 councillors shared a total of £291,953 between them in allowances.

The council leader Councillor Peter Britcliffe was the highest claimer with £30,952. Councillor Malcolm Pritchard claimed £1 of his basic allowance.

I really feel sorry for Councillor Britcliffe, what with having over 30,000 times the tasks of Councillor Pritchard. It's no wonder the former has no time to visit this forum.

Why do we need so many councillors for such a small area, and why do they each need to claim so much money in allowances?

Are allowances the same as or different to and on top of expenses?

Re: Councillors' Allowances

Why don't we just;

a) Turn their 'allowances' into a salary (which it is in all but name)?

b) Therefore put them on the payroll

c) Therefore sack them for incompetence

d) Then launch a police investigation into taking money by false pretences

I will leave e), f) and g) to you.

I wonder how many would carry on if they got standard minimum wage and nothing else?

I wonder how many would carry on if they got kicked up the arse twice a week just to remind them of exactly why they were there?

Re: Councillors' Allowances

Apologies for boring you so, katex.

I just can't fathom how Councillor (M) Pritchard was able do his job with only £1 basic allowance claimed in the whole of the last financial year, while Councillor Britcliffe couldn't possibly have done it with less than £30,952.

Nor can I understand why Hyndburn needs 36 councillors who claim almost £300,000 in allowances.

"Have a go yerself" doesn't suffice as an answer to either of those puzzling topics, I'm afraid.
