At the risk of raising some Lancashire ire, I'd have to put in a good word for the city of York. A great minster, a wonderful railway museum, and lots of other interesting bits of history. Of course, the place has a real problem with being completely overrun by tourists. BUT, just an easy train ride from Accy!

My personal choice would be Berlin. It looks such a beautiful city and seems to touch everyone who visits because of it's historical past.
