Would you go out in Accy at night ?

Went out down Accy last night for the first time in many months.
What an absolute tip ! Most of the pubs are dingy, smelly, dirty and downright unpleasant. To name and shame is poss not a great idea on here but let's just say that the ones in the town centre are appalling ! With the exceptions of the Calder and the Railway, the rest are bad.
I didn't feel safe in one of 'em; far too many people in it and surely breaking its fire certificate. The number of Police on Church St when I left to come home is a worry too, it's great that they are there but you have to wonder what they were expecting !
Not good and I won't be making a habit of it !

Don't know about the pubs but I'm not keen on being out in Accy at night making my way home from anywhere.

I haven't been out down Accy for ages but the last time I was there I was thinking something similar to what you've just said.I haven't been to a pub since the fag ban though.I would have thought the pubs would be cleaner now.

I haven't been out in a town/city centre since I lived in Liverpool, but I always felt safe.
I haven't lived in Accrington for years, so I couldn't comment specifically. However, isn't going out in town centres at weekends for teenagers and young 20s?

I certainly would never consider going out for a drink in any town centre nowadays.

would agree about who uses town centres for a drink, but the point being,we used to walk through the centre to get to places and enjoy doing it, that NO longer is an option.:(

Is Accrington really that bad? Obviously I don't read the local paper, so I'm not aware of crime in the town. Has Accrington really sunk so far?

That's very sad.

As I said, I don't really go into town centres very often. If I fancy a drink, I tend to go to the local pub.

Nothing wrong with Accrington town centre at all i think its fine. So what if it isnt immaculate? Show me one pub that is. And as they say, if you dont like it go elsewhere.

The pigs on Church street are a disgrace to the uniform, foul mouthed abusive yobs who are a bigger menace to society than the drunks. It will be a long time before I venture down that way of an evening again.

Re: Would you go out in Accy at night ?

Don't know whether you watched Bouncers tonight Lindsay, but even a small town like Batley seems to have similar problems with A level students binge drinking; believe me centre of Accy on a Fri/Sat had nowt on this lot. The language, bad behaviour left much to be desired.

Then they moved to Warrington ... same problem. Next progamme 'Crimestoppers' was again (I think) in Yorkshire .. just the same. So Accy no different to anywhere else, I'm afraid.

The girls are terrible, fighting, mooning, swearing, etc. You can only hope your own kids are not like this whilst out, or will be when they are of an age to drink. Clamping down on alcohol is steering for the next campaign methinks.

Not sure what you mean Cashy ? Certainly plenty of people there, especially women.

Never bothers me in Accy late on after night out with younger ladies at work (and me being one of the older women you mention ..LOL) .. always feel safe walking to taxi rank on my own, due to police presence and folks about .. mostly 'merry' not aggresive.

I went out in Accy centre between Christmas & New Year. It was like a ghost town. 20 years ago you could not get in some pubs due to overcrowding at that time of year.

I just wonder, is it the town centre or the fact that most of us can't run as fast as we used to? We always met unpleasant characters even when we were young and sprightly, a friend of mine the other day said he wouldn't walk home anymore he always catches a taxi, why? because he doesn't like the people he seems surrounded by when he does walk home, my reply was, and I still maintain it, either I can walk home in safety in my own town or I had better consider moving to another town, once the bullies, (of any age), take over then we may as well abandon any decent thought about civilisation. :stop:

Re: Would you go out in Accy at night ?

Well isn't life strange? Where I live there is a mix of white and Asian people, we all seem to get on without falling out with each other I'm recognising more and more of my actual neighbours with each day I live in this new, (to me), area.

As you have seen I do believe I and my neighbours should be able to wander our town without threats no matter who they are!

I left the pub a little early tonight, called in at a local take-away had a pleasant conversation with the owner then headed for home.

When I got near to home there was a group of Asian lads obviously enjoying a game of something, as I went past the back Alley near to them there was a rather breathless youth of about 15 years running up with a football, "Oie you miserable Black can't", he shouted, "don't kick it down there again". I laughed at the frustration he had displayed in his voice, and as he got level with me he turned and demanded to know what I was laughing at. I told him I had found his comment amusing especially his description of his friend, he then drew himself up to his full five foot and said, "Oh so you find it funny do you? Come on then pal, let's have a one to one!".

Again I laughed and then asked him why he should have a problem, I was just wondering if I should perhaps have stayed in the pub until 'last orders', just to be safe when all his mates jumped on him and told him not to be so nasty with that 'old man', after all he hasn't done anything wrong!

Now I was pleased that the other lads had jumped on him and told him to behave, but please lads if you read this, 'old man', was a bigger insult than anything your mate said!:D

Had to laugh at a post my son had entered on Facebook in a network about Accrington:-

You don't know class until you've been out on a night out in Accy. The sticky floors in the Bees Knees, the 15million steps to go to the toilets in Baileys, the illicit drug taking in Cloud 9 (allegedly - don't want to get sued now) and the random old men that sit in The Bridge sipping bitter surrounded by 18 year olds listening to Hard House mixed with 'Build me up Buttercup'. I dont go out that often but when i do its always with someone and we go out together and go home together no matter what. My dad got beat up on mad Friday last year on the netto car park for no reason so even if you are drunk, sober, with friends or family it doesnt really matter if someone has it in their head to be a stupid idiot and you are in the striking line then thats all in takes.

Best way always stay with a friend, that way if someone does decide to have a go at you there is a chance of getting help. Sad but true as you say you never know when these thugs are going to strike:mad:

I'm curious Bernie, don't you worry about Ian walzing around Accy after dark? I kinda do.

No need to worry about Ian, he is normally home early and when he is out later he gets a taxi home. You can't stop living your life just because some people think it's ok to have a go at anyone that comes within their radar.

If Accrington is this bad I'm considering not going this season when me meet you on the last game of the season.

Heck Bernie, I was more worried about the thugs feeling the smack with Ian's cane! :p:p:p Not really, I'd loved to hear that Ian took out 3 thugs and the rest ran off with their cowardly tails between their legs!;)

Best option by far is the bus to Manchester. £5.40 return, go early - have a good night out then last bus back at 11pm. Back in town before 11.45. It's a whole different world over there. No chavs, hundreds of bars to go at to cater for all tastes. Surprised more people don't do it. The one that goesfrom manc to Burnley is alway packed. Accy people must not like leaving the town, comfy in crap hole pubs in the town centre.
Only decent pubs in Accy now are the Railway, Nags & Calder, Attic if you like decet music. All the rest are shocking.

Have done the Manchester run a few times now, excellent evening out. Usually go mid afternoon, but i do think that last bus is very rowdy and rough. Always make sure i sit downstairs.

You have obviously never been in Piccadilly in the early hours of Sunday morning!

Aye, Piccadilly is the worse bit of Manchester. Northern Quarters good & Castlefield basin. Good bars - Corbierres, Rain bar, Knott bar, Trof, Cask, the list goes on and on. Been going for over 4 years now and still manage to find a couple of new bars each visit.
