Sounds like it turned out to be a good thing the Cruise was cancelled after all Cashy!

I made a nice meal -Paté, Duck breast with a radicchio and orange salad, lemon sorbet and then Pasticcini from Betty's -the best cake shop in Cremona.

Tucked hubby up in bed at 10;):D as he had to get up at 2-30am for milking.

Watched a bit of telly, spoke to a friend on the phone then saw the New Year in with a cup of tea -we'd drunk a bottle of sparkling stuff with the meal earlier. Was in bed at 12-02 and unfortunately woke with a start at 3-45am with terrible pains and something akin to Nova virus starting. Been feeling rotten all day -haven't managed to eat a thing...

Could be a good way to start a "this year i'm going to lose weight" resolution!

Happy New Year anyway -as far as i'm concerned at the moment, it can only get better:rolleyes::D

Sorry you're not well - do you mean norovirus? never heard of nova virus  Richard and I have both been a bit iffy for the last couple of days but don't think I've transmitted it to Italy. But we did eat duck - as did you...

We did manage to toast the new year and absent friends while watching the fireworks in London on TV but that was about it.

Onwards and upwards for 2012.

Ate, drank & got merry with good friends, contributed to the popping & banging around midnight, then sat & put the world to rights into the wee small hours, with some even better friends "Mr Smirrnoff, Mr Becks & Mac McFarclas" ;)

Called at the Griffins head, which was packed and ticket only, then to The Whittakers which wasnt as busy, but the music was poor both in choice and in quality, the 3 of us were the third and smallest party to leave in a 15 minute period, went on to The Broadway and then have a memory lapse :P, twas a good night overall!

Himself watched some really crappy films on TV.
I listened to some music and retired to bed about 10.30(after being told I was miserable for not having an alcoholic drink).
I finished the book I was reading....and that was it.
Not done much today either...just had a normal Sunday Roast.
Anyway, Glad you all seemed to have fun.
Happy New year folks.

Stayed in, and watched the whole second series of The League of Gentleman.

Ate nice things, and laughed my head off.

It was a local new year.

For a local person.

There was nothing for you, there.

Just looked up Bettys menus on the www - didn't realise their founder was Swiss and they do a lot of Swiss items - you can tell I haven't been there!

And I see that Cremona's Betti has the surname Germano - muddying the waters even more!

I love the description on their website - laboratorio dolciario artigianale - even without much Italian I can tell that'ssomething good!

Opposite way round Sue -Germano is his name, Betti the surname.

They make loads of delicious things all by hand - cakes, chocs, gelée fruits, marzipan, almond paste sweets and biscuits, proper Panettone (not the indusrial rubbishy ones)and lots more...just as well I don't have a sweet tooth!;):D

Mi dispiace, Signor Betti!!

We have a panettone here not opened yet - at least it's made in Italy, not Morrisons like the first one we had a week or two ago. ;)

When I see Panettone, I think bread and butter pudding. It is very very good in that nursery pudding...with a few addditions of course.

That would be "posh" bread and butter pudding:D

Mum used to make something called a Queen of puddings which was also a left-over user -i think it had jam and meringue too.

Panettone pah give me bread and butter pudding anyday with lovely crispy bits on the top yum yum yum top quality winter comfort food .

Margaret Pilkington 04-01-2012 19:34

Re: What did yeh do last night?

Yes it is.......if I am buying Panettone I wait until well into the new year and buy it at knockdown prices..........and then I will sometimes make bread and butter pudding....though I am trying to give all such things a miss.

I put marmalade on my buttered panettone, I use golden sultanas, cherries, angelica and chopped dried apricots. It is absolutely delicious....with custard or with cream.....and if you are really gluttonous you can have it with all three.
When I was out in Brisbane at my sisters I made a great big dish full.......my sisters husband took it to work with him and had all the other chaps on his shift drooling......so I made another dishful to take into work.
they wanted to know when I could start work...as their canteen cook:)

Last time I had bread and butter pudding was a Harry Ramsden's in Blackpool the other year - it was pretty poor as was the fish'n'chips too.

Margaret you shouldn't be allowed to post pics like that - but I would like it with lots more candied peel and no cherries or apricots please.

By the way the caption is inaccurate - it's not a bread pud which I can't stand, it's a breadand butter pud. Miss pedant strikes again! ;)

Di I think Queen of puds is made with breadcrumbs and a custard.

Margaret Pilkington 05-01-2012 06:19

Re: What did yeh do last night?

It's OK Miss Pedant.......I stand corrected. The fruited bread in that picture had peel in it and marmalade on it.........and, I can make it with whatever dried/glace fruit tickles your palate.
Whilst at my nephews place in Oz I made it specially for him with peaches(fresh) and pears from his mothers fruit trees in the back paddock.......all I can say is he liked it(ate a huge dish all to himself...guarded it like some junkyard dog, made threats of bodily harm if anyone even thought of touching it) but it wasn't to my taste.

The great thing about this kind of cooking is that it uses up whatever ingredients you have to hand - every home will have it's own version or favourite.

I really don't have a sweet tooth - I prefer very dark chocolate and fruits like rhubarb and gooseberries -though I am partial to raspberries.
I don't think you can beat a rhubarb fool as a dessert.

Things like Tiramisù (which means "pick me up") I find far too sweet -give me a sherry trifle every time, or a proper apple pie or my absolute favourite a custard tart...(begin to think i do actually like sweets after all):D
