Talking of pints ... as I down a Rickard's Red ... I like Workplace Health and Safety '60s style ... worked at Dutton's in the summer of '63 ... we had a morning and an afternoon (generous) beer allowance ... come three of the clock in the afternoon half the work force were in various stages of happy inebreation:alright: I remember going out on a couple of delivery runs as second man. The driver had a free pint at every drop, and two or three in the pub where we had lunch:eek:

Hang on though, can we agree that when unions had power I mean real power, it could take several days just to get a light bulb changed.

It was wrong, Jaysay's pin up Mag's sorted that out, anyone competent from then on anyone could change that silly little bulb.
A big success for the Tories and perhaps sensibility.

What do we have now? Government approved Health and Safety, that says you can't change a bulb unless you have a certificate that allows you to.

So,

We have gone from unions (horrible nasty things), saying our workers must be safe and therefore one man one job, to Government approved one man one job but to do it we will tax, erm sorry, I mean put you on an expensive training course, so that you can assess if the bulb needs changing and if so, how many weeks it will be to set up the scaffolding to change the bulb.

No wonder I'm unemployed!
:(

Have to agree Less, but a lot of elf and safety issues, like kids not being allowed to play conkers and the like are a load of nonsense, its just teachers and bosses covering themselves before com-pen-sa-tion sets in;)

Those were the days Eric, once worked in the brewing house at Lion Brewery back in the 70s, we got a beer allowance while we worked there, two pints of beer a day, the brew lads had more, it was hilarious how they used to fight over who's turn it was to go and get the Jazz as they called it.

The reason we got so much beer at Dutton's was because of the Union .... I know, I know;) ... when they partially automated the plant the Union insisted that the beer allowance stay the same. In the malt store where I mainly worked, three of us got the allowance for 15 men:eek: And the charge hand ... I think he was called Tommy O'Rourke, the only tea-total Irishman in history ... didn't drink:dancedog: Guys who didn't get as much as us usually helped us out; :D but, if they didn't, we used to have to pour beer away:o ... good beer, too; the middle of the brew.

Good beer Eric, you bet it was, them lads only ever had the best for themselves and why not. Just a wonder, when I lived in Hassy in the 70s my local was Wilson's, now at first it took some getting used to, being weaned on Thwaites, Lions and Duttons, but eventually got into drinking it. One afternoon I when to Wilsons Brewery in Manchester, with my Landlord, we were a little early so we called in at their social club next door to the offices, got two pints of bitter, both me and the Landlord looked at each other, because it was a different drink to what we got in our pub:eek:
