£3,000 cigarette butt
A cigarette butt has fetched almost £3,000 at an auction in New Zealand. The pricey stub was not owned by some famous film star but was in fact the end of a cigarette smoked in the last few seconds before NZ introduced its smoking ban. It was lit at 23:59 on December 9th by the owners of an Auckland bar, Reuters reports, only moments before the ban on smoking in public places came into force. The cigarette end, described as a "priceless Kiwiana collector's item", has now been propelled into history by fetching NZ$7,500 (£2,866) at auction. Alongside the butt, the successful bidder will take home a certificate of authenticity and a display case in which to mount the stub.  |
