If you younger folks don't reconise him, he played for Preston North End and England in the late 40s early 50s played in all the five foward positions which teams employed in those days. Bill Shankley said of him Tom could get in any team even wearing an overcoat.

There's a road in Preston named after him - been on it many times in the course of my visits to hospital in Preston.

Late 50s as well. I skipped evening tech to watch his benefit match, he played as did a number of others who I had only read about.
A great player and must rank high amongst the gentlemen of the game.
