Job!

Sup folks?

Anyone know any places that have vacancies and are likely to take someone on?

I've applied for so many jobs and got nothing back, the jobcentre seems to be a waste of time too. I'll do anything at all except cleaning.

garinda 05-11-2007 13:05

Re: Job!

Good luck with your search.

I can understand not wanting to make cleaning your lifelong job, but most employers would look more favourably at someone who was employed as a cleaner, and who therefore could supply references, as well as an apptitude for work, than someone who was currently doing nothing.

Personally I've done all kinds of demeaning jobs, before I found my ideal job.

It is tough, so as said earlier, good luck with your search.

Re: Job!

Julie applied for a cleaning job at Accy Timber 10 years ago, shes now Area Administrator for the North West.

As Rindy says, the willingness to do menial tasks shows the work ethic better than any CV can.

You really should have some idea of what you want to do long term and work towards that. Otherwise you are unlikely to enjoy what you do and then it becomes a bore. You spend far too much time at work to not enjoy what you do.

Re: Job!

Hey even cleaning jobs require quals & experience these days - surprisingly even those types of work are fussy on requirements. Need a little job myself & yes the jobcentre plus is very dire indeed as much as it displeases the majority assuming jobs are 2 a penny, its not that easy when been out of work for some time for good reason doing courses yet long time out or those starting on the rung of work tho least young people have connections [th'owd career service to us owdies lol] not that much scope for help for rest of us other than jobcentre for rest of us & when thats bad where else do you look........no not the Observer either unless u can get to work in Manchester/Rochdale area, local paper nowt much local in job front if u dont have your own transportation means:(

Things must have changed a lot - i found the careers service invaluable when i was younger - still have things from them now that counts on my cv as impressive. Nowadays finding hours round family & being local is more the hardship for me, hence finding cleaning jobs or menial work are particular in their employee standards - catch 22 but there is no other job/careers service that caters for the over 25's, stuck with jobcentre plus or find one on your own.

Do any of you know any websites that are worth trying out to find jobs?

Have you thought about doing home caring Stanleymad? Don't think transport is essential as you can work locally. Think there is a place to enquire on Dutton Street, could be worth a try and I'm sure they would be able to arrange your hours to work round your children.

You tried obvious places like Asda etc they seem to employ for the Christmas period, if you get took on at least it would be a stopgap till something better came along.

Try agencies mate. Loads of them around and they all need staff for this time of year. Probably only be temp till christmas but some do take staff on perm if they impress.

Jae Swift 05-11-2007 17:29

I'm looking for perm. Sick of being in and out of jobs every 3 months, doing my nut in.

You fancy going on the look on weekend or something?

try knocking on some doors (go in and ask), you get further if you actually go to the firms and ask for work, depending of course on what you want to do, if its factory work, go to as many places as you can and ask, most places will train you to do the work, my hubby's work's get peep's knocking, thats how he got his job there, hope you find somewhere soon, good luck

Re: Job!

Yeah but having experience of working in lots of different jobs isnt necereraly what employers want. From my experiences i have found that they prefer you to have worked in one place for a while to show that your loyal. And you still havent told us what experience you have ie; where you worked, what kind of duties and responsibilities you had, how long you worked there. Not a lot i can do for you without that info mate.

onlyme 13-11-2007 09:54

Re: Job!

Ya might have to be flexible in working weekends as well. Most people dont like doing it, which is why there are more jobs out there if you are willing to work unsocial hours. However it is a foot in the door and there may be a point once working that you can go for different shifts.

Dont think I had a weekend not working for 5 years or summat daft but now I have the luxury of choosing my own hours

haha true, we have a saturday girl where i work that dont like working saturdays hahha

Speedy 13-11-2007 15:30

Re: Job!

Main thing is to try to get your foot in the door. When i started at sayers i was a saturday lad, im only contracted to do a minimum of 8 hours but i usually do more than 20. And you need to realise the more restrictions you put on what hours you wont do and what work you wont do the less chance you have of finding work.

LancYorkYankee 16-11-2007 18:37

Re: Job!

I agree completely with Ian, Rindy and others regarding be willing to start "at the bottom." Before I felt able/worthy of getting a "more respectable position," I had paited house, cut and fried donuts, worked all jobs on a dairy farm (no shuffling cow crap is as close to the bottom as you can get!) as was having (too gross, ask me that one at the Christmas Meet), slaughtered pigs, sheep, cattle, rats, and then some really gross stuff. :(:p

However, all these references of my dependabilty, promptness, and willingness to do any job and do it right, ended up with me working in a high level job with the Federal Government. Also made me appreciate as well as be respected by those in the aforementioned jobs because "I had been there."

Good luck Mate!

Brian

Re: Job!

Well ive done various stuff throughout my life ie shops, stores, caring, factory etc and always gone back to bar work . I loved it . Ive always worked eves weekends xmas new years etc and would never have had it any other way . because for many years i was a single parent and couldnt afford to go out much so by working the unsocial hrs i was able to have a social life . . Besides it was great to give others "their fix" cus thats when i got he best tips lol ..
Also ended up with my own pubs eventually . starting at the bottom is the best policy .
Ive got two teenage lads both of which i hope will do ok they are both very good and hard workers although one of them has just been laid off due to end of season(drawback of doing seafront bars) however the first thing he did was apply at local spar for some hrs . He dosent want to work there as he was in the middle of doing his nvq for bar management but i know he will if he has too . thankfully the bar he has been workin at all season has decided to find him some out of season hrs so as he can carry on with his nvq . so alls well .
Point being be prepared to do the hrs and the rewards will follow . good luck with the search

Well most of the pubs and clubs in town need bar staff for over christmas. Lots of warehouse work going at the moment through agencies (check jobcentre plus website). Many of the shops in town have vacancies advertised in the window. Really aint difficult to find a job at this time of year.

Never trying through an agency again they don't help at all..

Your obviously using wrong agencies then. I got job through one yesterday, so did my cousin. Try cummins mellor, hi-flyers, workforce recruitment, and TMS. Just a few of the agencies i have used and found really good.

No.

I'd rather go into places myself and give my CV than agencies that are supposed to help you find work..

But they dont.

Thet dont help in the slightest, I've more a chance being blind and deaf and finding a job in a call center than finding a job through an agency.

Rochdale is a good 1.5hrs bus ride on the 464, bit of a long way without any motorbike or car as for North Manchester, I live in Oldham and to get to Middleton can take between 30 as the bus timetable says and 1hr if traffic is bad and bad is the normal state of affairs here.
To be fair agencies sometimes offer a permanent position for the right person thats how i got my current job.
Plus there have been other people that at my place that have got permanent employment through this agency.
JobcentrePlus is a waste of time though but still use them as you never know your luck.

I been looking for another job for a while. Need more hours than what i was getting at sayers. Start at warehouse in clayton tomorrow, but still going to fit in shifts at sayers whenever i can. Need to make some real money now, sick of using my overdraft all time and need to start saving up. Trust me at this time of year agencies are the best way to find work. If you follow any of the advice given on here you will have a job in no time(i found a job less than a month after asking for advice on here).

Speedy what rate of pay would you earn at your age? last time I was on an agency, I started on £5.80ph and when I joined my present employer me wages dropped to £5.64ph, not sure what min wage is for a 27yr old is at minute.

But on the whole agency work sometimes pays better then say 'a normal employer` especially for temp work at this time of year, so I'd get stuck in whilst I could.

Certainly better then dole at any rate.

Jae, it is in the agencys interest to find you work, thats how they get paid after all!

I used to work, god a few years ago now like, in a recruitment agency in Burnley (though it was a national company) and how it works is this:-

Temp jobs:- Agency charge approx 40-50% mark up on temp hourly wage. So if temp is being paid £5 per hour, agency will be being paid approx £9 per hour. This covered paying holiday pay for the temp but stilll a bloody good mark up.

Permanent jobs:- A fixed fee of the annual wage, usually with a minimum. So if annual wage was going to be 18k. the agency would charge approx 18% or 2k whichever is higher.

The recruitment consultant would then get a %age of monies from jobs filled as a their commission. What normally happens is you have one person in charge of temp jobs in a certain jobs criteria, one in charge of permanent etc. You could end up with the person that is in charge of the area you are looking at being, well, naff, so that may be why you have had bad experiences. The agency I used to work for used to interview you, re-write the cv (if needed using all the latest buzz words etc lol) and it used to take a couple of weeks to get you properly up and running for the agency to promote you. To be honest, if the person rang up every now and then asking for work, they used to get priority for being 'keen'.

It doesnt cost anything to register with the agency, and its worth doing just for the sake of an hours interview and a phone call every week. Also the agency can handle any negotiations on your behalf, so if there are certain limitations on what you can do etc, you can let the agency know so that they can sell that in with you

And yes I am working, but I got it through an agency. And a bloody good job it is n all lol. I informed the agency that I had a small child, and that basically I would work whatever hours required, but around being a mum before 9am, and between 5pm and 7.30pm. I am now working in a job, based from home, where work allows me to stop everything to do the nursery run, knowing i'll catch up at 'stupid o clock' hence sat here at this time of the morning lol. I dont have to do my foreign travel or events that comes with the job. If i decide to do one of these, I get paid extra. It works well for both myself and the company i work for, I am more loyal as they have been fantastic with what i need, and they get a dedicated employee that doesnt take the p*ss lol.

If it wasnt for an agency I dont think I would ever have achieved this position, so try giving them a go

Speedy 23-11-2007 13:31

Re: Job!

Im on 5.52 at sayers. And 5.65 for the warehouse job. Just done my first day there today and its the easiest job in the world, although it gets boring after a while. Like other people have said if you want work these days its best to use an agency, as even in temp jobs there is always a chance of being taken on permanent and even if you dont get that its always good to have experience. Plus it fills in any gaps in your work history until you can fine something you prefer. But really mate you still aint told us what experience you have or what work you want. If you do we will be able to help a lot more.

You cannot afford to be picky because with poles they are hard working and they will work any shift they are also normally very skilled particularly because they still have industry in Poland that we've not got any more.
Plus they aren't botherd about working for minimum wage, in some cases it more then they might earn at home.
