The Arndale Clock

I took these before photography was forbiddden and the clock was quite new. It worked properly then.

Has anybody heard what is going to happen to it? One of the workmen removing it said it may be repaired and relocated.

Latest rumour has it it's going to be part of a giant sculpture outside the Globe Centre...very apt, considering it's design

WillowTheWhisp 17-06-2004 11:17

Re: The Arndale Clock

I agree about the cafe and have you seen the prices they charge? Just somewhere to sit would have been more welcome.

I wonder if the clock will work when it's relocated? Talking of The Globe Centre - what about that fountain near there, at the bottom of Ormerod St, that thing never works.

Tealeaf 09-07-2004 17:02

Re: The Arndale Clock

It has just been announced by Hyndburn Council that the Arndale Clock is to to re-sited in the middle of the mini-roundabout which has just been constructed for the purpose near the junction of Henry Street & Blackburn Road in Church.

WillowTheWhisp 09-07-2004 17:05

Re: The Arndale Clock

Please tell me you're joking Tealeaf.

On the hour every hour this thing opens up and plays "Rock Around The Clock" Is this not going to cause traffic accidents?

Re: The Arndale Clock

I would have thought 'massacred' the song would be more apt! Looking at those pictures of it opening (Ta Willow) gives me a good mental picture of what opening Pandora's box might look like!

By the way - just driven past the Globe Centre today - that gigantic cog is there! Don't know how long it's been there so sorry if this is old news. Why is it out of the way when it could have been prominent in the town centre somewhere?

WillowTheWhisp 09-07-2004 19:37

Re: The Arndale Clock

I thought the cog was going in front of that thing which used to be a fountain. Either way it is too far out of the way as you say and not many people will see it.

I would much rather they got the town cleaned up first before doing stuff like this.

Ceejache 10-07-2004 09:45

Re: The Arndale Clock

Yeah sorry - in front of the 'fountain' (I use the term 'fountain' loosely!). It actually looks pretty good...pity no-one will see it as we have said.

So come on Hyndburn Copuncil if you read this can we have the clock back please in a nice prominent position but protected from the elements? Now where would be the best location? I know! Demolish that cafe in the Arndale centre and put it there. :D

Wouldnt that make it chime more than once an hour? I used to come with the kids from Ramsbottom to see the clock, when they were older of course they didnt pester to see it, but came to look with the first grandchild once and found to my dismay that it was gone, often wondered about the fate of it. I would love to be able to take my second family to see it, and hopefully can do one day.

Is it still lying underneath the Arndale I wonder? Think it was 1987 when the Arndale opened. All that money spent on the clock. Shame, cos it could now go back in its old place. The cafe is not there now, in fact, there's nothing there now really.

I wonder how many people would really like see the return of the clock. I remember at the time it wasn't universally popular. My own view is that it added something to the centre. People use to go into the Arndale just to see the clock.

Where it is now I'm not sure. I'll see if I can find out.

Re: The Arndale Clock

I asked the question - this is the answer

The clock was removed by the people who installed the cafe and they paid for it to be dismantled. The clock is still there under the Arndale but the cost involved in rebuilding it and reinstalling it is too great in the current climate.

Unfortunately, they weren't able to say how much it would cost to put it back. Plus, if it was installed there would presumably be some running costs. All down to money I'm afraid.

We have a Town Centre Regeneration Board which might well be the place to raise the issue of the clock.

As you rightly said Jen, the clock certainly was an attraction in the Arndale Centre.

It's suppose to meet quite regular. I'm not a member of it, there's only a couple of Councillors on it.

I would have thought as someone who as business in the town centre, you could be member of Town Centre Regeneration Board. That's assuming you'd want to be that is.

The next meeting of the Chamber of Trade (town centre shops) is on 24th Nov. I'm sure they'll have discussed it in the past.

The only people who can make the decision are the Arndale Management - and they've told me that at the present moment they can't afford to put it back. Perhaps if all the retail units were full then it might be a different story but they're not.

I do have the contact details for the Arndale Management so if anyone wants to ask them how much money would need raising, pm me and I'll give you their details.

Agree the Arndale management "Are" the only ones who can make that decision, but as they decided probably through greed to let someone remove it, if they had any decency they would put it back.

I don't know how much it would cost to put the clock back in the Arndale What I do know is that a lot of people seem to have liked the clock when it was there.

All us want to see the Town Centre doing well. Putting the clock back would be a contributing factor in bringing people back into the town centre in my opinion. All be it a small part, but it would help.

Good idea.

It might halt plans for a more lasting memorial to himself, commemorating all the good work he's done for the town.

I never got to see this thing in action but from all accounts it was certainly interesting, even if it wasn't to all tastes. I must admit I'm throughly intrigued by the thought of seeing it working again.

It would certainly be less irritating than being hassled about double glazing, Sky television or being guilt-tripped by a hard-sell charity every time I walk through the Arndale Centre.

Maybe they should spend some money on replacing the split floor covering in the lifts before someone trips, suffers injury(?) and claims against them. The application of adhesive tape to cover the cracks is not really an answer

They opened that cafe under were the clock used to be as well. I thought the clock was an attraction, and it would be nice to see it reinstated.

It would have to be a sun dial for that :p:D

The clock would take up space that the Arndale centre can rent out.
I would like to see it in the market hall. Enough space for it and it would attract people in there, the kids used to love watching it.

There is plenty of space in the market hall for the clock now they got rid of all those silly stalls that people could buy local produce at a good price from.:D

Stop moaning.

You can still pick up a crocheted gonk in there, relatively reasonably.

A couple of thousand's most reasonable, for wooly art.

My old man used to take my kids(now 31 and 34) to see it too whenever we visited, he couldn't get them away from it, shame it went!
