The Arndale Clock
I took these before photography was forbiddden and the clock was quite new. It worked properly then.

One of the workmen removing it said it may be repaired and relocated. |
Re: The Arndale Clock
Latest rumour has it it's going to be part of a giant sculpture outside the Globe Centre...very apt, considering it's design
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
that cafe idea is rubbish
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
I agree about the cafe and have you seen the prices they charge? Just somewhere to sit would have been more welcome.
I wonder if the clock will work when it's relocated? Talking of The Globe Centre - what about that fountain near there, at the bottom of Ormerod St, that thing never works. |
Re: The Arndale Clock
It has just been announced by Hyndburn Council that the Arndale Clock is to to re-sited in the middle of the mini-roundabout which has just been constructed for the purpose near the junction of Henry Street & Blackburn Road in Church.
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
Please tell me you're joking Tealeaf.
On the hour every hour this thing opens up and plays "Rock Around The Clock" Is this not going to cause traffic accidents? |
Re: The Arndale Clock
I would have thought 'massacred' the song would be more apt! Looking at those pictures of it opening (Ta Willow) gives me a good mental picture of what opening Pandora's box might look like!
By the way - just driven past the Globe Centre today - that gigantic cog is there! Don't know how long it's been there so sorry if this is old news. Why is it out of the way when it could have been prominent in the town centre somewhere? |
Re: The Arndale Clock
I thought the cog was going in front of that thing which used to be a fountain. Either way it is too far out of the way as you say and not many people will see it.
I would much rather they got the town cleaned up first before doing stuff like this. |
Re: The Arndale Clock
Yeah sorry - in front of the 'fountain' (I use the term 'fountain' loosely!). It actually looks pretty good...pity no-one will see it as we have said.

That seems to happen with Fortunecity and some firewalls. I hadn't learned how to attach them to the posts when I did that. Here they are again.

Re: The Arndale Clock
Thanks Willow, problem sorted.
I guess you either love the clock, or hate it. Whatever, it is different and unusual and you don't see many like that around the country. The children will love it I am sure. |
Re: The Arndale Clock
i for one think its interesting & my grankids love it, they stand with their mouths open in amazment, mind you i do tell them a fairy story bout it first he he he he .
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
I thought it looked cheap and tacky but our kids loved it and now it's gone I want the damn thing back!
So come on Hyndburn Copuncil if you read this can we have the clock back please in a nice prominent position but protected from the elements? Now where would be the best location? I know! Demolish that cafe in the Arndale centre and put it there. :D |
Re: The Arndale Clock
Could anybody tell me what happened to the clock and where it is now?
I want to take my son to see it, I just KNOW he'd love it as I always did ... :D Wouldn't it be great to have it returned to it's rightful place now the dreadful overpriced cafe is long gone ;) Unique x |
Re: The Arndale Clock
omg... i remember the clock! i didnt think i'd seen it.....

|
Re: The Arndale Clock
There's a campaign just started on Facebook to get the clock brought back. Someone, not sure who, seems to know where it is hiding.
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
Maybe a good vote winner for next May ;)
I am sure we must have a Councillor or 20 that read these pages. Maybe someone will pick this up and run with it. Might be as good as CCTV or bowls ;) |
Re: The Arndale Clock
Oooh Gayle can you point me in the direction of that? I've never been able to navigate Facebook. I'm OK on Myspace :D
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
if you register on facebook and pm me your name i will invite you to join the group..........
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
Aww yeah it'd be really nice to see the clock back where it should be
Don't think the kids remember it:( |
Re: The Arndale Clock
I do remember seeing the clock but in my memory it is in a much bigger arndale...... was it bigger or was it just because i was small? :D
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
You were small.
I think I'm already registered on Facebook. I'll go and have a look. |
Re: The Arndale Clock
we saved the clock last time .............why not try again?
will look for the thread about it in the archives. |
Re: The Arndale Clock

Re: The Arndale Clock
I think the Observer got a bit carried away when it claimed a local website had saved the clock. We tried, but it never came out of the Arndale cellars despite our best efforts. If I recall correctly Kipax had some correspondence with the Arndale owners about it.
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
Some rich expat may well pay a lot for it if put on ebay.
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
Perhaps if they brought it back they could alter the mechanism, so that instead of chiming the hour, it only chimed when another shop in the Arndale closed down.

Is it still lying underneath the Arndale I wonder? Think it was 1987 when the Arndale opened. All that money spent on the clock. Shame, cos it could now go back in its old place. The cafe is not there now, in fact, there's nothing there now really.

I wonder how many people would really like see the return of the clock. I remember at the time it wasn't universally popular. My own view is that it added something to the centre. People use to go into the Arndale just to see the clock. Where it is now I'm not sure. I'll see if I can find out. |
Re: The Arndale Clock
I liked it. It was unique and added a bit of colour and humour to the place. Lets get it up n running and if the Arndale reaches 25 then put it back.
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
I'm having a meeting with the manager of the Arndale tomorrow about something else - I'll ask him where it is. :D
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
i always loved the clock, thought it brought character to the arndale.:)

Taggy, my sentiments too......we have barely kissed goodbye to Bonfire night, and the blooming trimmings are up for Christmas.
I think we should confine Christmas....the trees, the trimmings and everything else, to December. |

Re: The Arndale Clock
I asked the question - this is the answer
The clock was removed by the people who installed the cafe and they paid for it to be dismantled. The clock is still there under the Arndale but the cost involved in rebuilding it and reinstalling it is too great in the current climate. Unfortunately, they weren't able to say how much it would cost to put it back. Plus, if it was installed there would presumably be some running costs. All down to money I'm afraid. |
Re: The Arndale Clock
Maybe the clock could be used to inform people when the next horse race is, they won't have a problem finding a bookies

Re: The Arndale Clock
I would think if the clock is to make a reappearance it would have to be Arndale themselves who have to finance it.
I don't know what the chance's are, but it would be a nice gesture from them if they were to reinstate the clock. |
Re: The Arndale Clock
might be a suggestion all the shops in the arndale put a donation in a pot to put towards it. The clock would attract shoppers to the arndale ..can remember people used to stand and watch it ....

I think it was the quirkiness that attracted people. I seem to remember people use to wait for the clock to strike the hour. I suppose anything that brings more people into the town centre has to be welcomed |

I would have thought as someone who as business in the town centre, you could be member of Town Centre Regeneration Board. That's assuming you'd want to be that is. |
Re: The Arndale Clock
The next meeting of the Chamber of Trade (town centre shops) is on 24th Nov. I'm sure they'll have discussed it in the past.
The only people who can make the decision are the Arndale Management - and they've told me that at the present moment they can't afford to put it back. Perhaps if all the retail units were full then it might be a different story but they're not. I do have the contact details for the Arndale Management so if anyone wants to ask them how much money would need raising, pm me and I'll give you their details. |

Re: The Arndale Clock
I don't know how much it would cost to put the clock back in the Arndale What I do know is that a lot of people seem to have liked the clock when it was there.
All us want to see the Town Centre doing well. Putting the clock back would be a contributing factor in bringing people back into the town centre in my opinion. All be it a small part, but it would help. |
Re: The Arndale Clock
Anyone interested in this might want to listen to Radio Lancashire tomorrow morning.
|
Re: The Arndale Clock
I would rather poke myself in the eye then listen to Radio Lancashire, I am 40 not 140 :D
Will you be letting us know after it has been on the radio? |

Shame. Perhaps, it's something that our Councillors should putting forward for the Town Centre masterplan.

Re: The Arndale Clock
Maybe this clock could be put in the ne market hall. It might attract a few more people in. The great leader of the council could organise it and then add another brass plaque to his collection.
Right i'm off to hide. |

Good idea. It might halt plans for a more lasting memorial to himself, commemorating all the good work he's done for the town. |
The Arndale Clock
Forgot to mention, was talking to a member of the council, in the market hall on Wednesday. When asked my views, one of my comments was that the clock could possibly be found a home there. The answer was "its being looked into" - hmmmm! We will see eh.

We Hyndburn Folk should raise money to the Arndale Centre so they can afford to put the clock back.

There is plenty of space in the market hall for the clock now they got rid of all those silly stalls that people could buy local produce at a good price from.:D
