I try not to reminisce, as things are never the same when you go back, somethings worse, others better, I did however remember my old Head Gardener when I went in O.H.P. he died recently.

Yes we went up, but not to the top due to the rain , we parked up on a wide bit of road as the car park was locked. I think due to all the logging that was going on.

Not really the Coppice, it is up Burnley Road just past the roundabout for the motorway there is a lay by on the right. You can either go straight up and over the style to the quarry, or take a right and do a circular walk through the woods.

Went up there today, followed the route on the map I found, I`ve lived in Accrington all my life and I never new we had a gorge!

At the head of that gorge is a waterfall, when it has rained heavily overnight can be a good photo opportunity.
Also if you go left you walk through the quarry with its walls, paths and spoil piles from when it was worked, and coming down off the quarry by the main road down the old firing range is off to the left. Check out my Hapton quarry photos on my flickr page to give you some idea of what you can find.

I feel like a newcomer, when have we had a firing range?
By the way, I thought castle clough wood a much nicer walk than hameldon wood.

Castle Clough is a wetter walk if you come back along the stream bed since the footpath washed away. Hameldon woods has two sections, the pines, then a wall, then the broadleaf trees and a stream, the same one that runs through castle clough. In summer I think Hameldon is a better walk, but shorter.

As for the firing range, I dont have any specific dates, however Retlaw has actually used it, so he should know.

gpick24 27-04-2013 22:36

Re: 3D Panoramic Pics

I found hameldon to be a bit too man made, the path was worn away and you can see the waterproofing underneath (if that`s what it is) and the trees where just too straight, like they had been planted rather than just grown there on there own.
I think i might go down castle clough again tomorrow.

davemac 28-04-2013 09:34

Re: 3D Panoramic Pics

The path washed away last summer with all the heavy rain we had, instead of going straight up, go right, it takes you away from the pines and toward the stream and the bluebells, much nicer. Did you find the waterfall at the far end of castle clough?

davemac 28-04-2013 10:03

Re: 3D Panoramic Pics

Flickr: davemac43's Photostream this page shows the stream through Hameldon woods, there is a strange bit of carved stone that I can only guess was used to dam or divert the stream for some reason.

For a first time there is nothing wrong with them apart from a bit of flare, and that is the sun and easily rectified.

We have all those thanks, they're not that big actually, mere saplings, but the roots are still going under the wall thanks to the stupid tw@t who planted them and they're very close together too. We have just topped them this year but it's an ongoing thing.

Its a common mistake when planting trees, not taking into account how big they will be in say, 15 years time and then, 20 years. The older they get the more expensive to deal with, 30 meters away from a house or wall is still a bit to close, the roots always extend past the canopy of the tree.

Cut yours off at ground level, then apply stump killer to the stump, digging out roots can damage walls and buildings, plus give you backache

Cut yours off at ground level, then apply stump killer to the stump, digging out roots can damage walls and buildings, plus give you backache

Thanks Dave, would you believe these are only a few feet apart, think he thought he was planting a hedge.

I will pass your instructions to my tame tree cutter, AKA Richard or my garden gnome. This year we have topped the trees to the height of the fence, probably about 10 ft, the run is probably about 30ft. And the trees are on the outside of the fence, which means they are impinging on the private road and our neighbours' right of way. Grrr what a ****** he was.
