Hope its ok to start a fresh thread for photographs of Wednesdays visit by our Queen.
Between us, we should get lots of photographs showing this memorable visit to our town. Would be good if folk posted!
Was in town today/tonight, so took a few photos.

Should have taken photos down the side of the Town Hall in the Market car park. When you want a policeman in Accrington you can never find one usually, now you can't move for them

I just read the poster on the last photo, it says your car will be towed away if you park there, then at the bottom it says "Hyndburn the place to be", or not to be that is the question!

Here's one of the less glamorous sides of the visit I was refering to earlier, the numbers had increased by 5pm

Town Hall looking good Atarah -look forward to seeing some photos of the parade and HM.

Security must be quite a nightmare for events like this -hope it all goes well. A lot of people will be looking forward to this -especially the school-children.:)

A little historical note of interest - my Gt Grandfather wrote in his journals that on July
9th, 1913 he was "playing" ie not working for the King's visit - he was also "playing" a year earlier, June 21st, 1912 for the Coronation! That would have been George Vth -I wonder if any photos exist of that visit -would be interesting for a comparison -almost 100 years ago.

Glad to see it isn't raining - people don't seem to have made much of an effort with what they're wearing for the special occasion do they?!

One Dave Sidebottom, of Lina Street, at least made a bit of an effort.

If I didn't know better (and the jacket had been blue) I might have been fooled into thinking that was you Garinda - hiding behind the make-up whilst you cheered Her Maj on her way:rolleyes::D

Mobertol - The use of 'playing', ie not working, was common , probably up to 1960. Equally common was the dialect word with the same meaning - 'laiking'

I think yesterday was a 'not to be forghotten' day in the chronology of Accrington history. Well done to Atarah for starting this off.

Well, fate was NOT on my side yesterday, I went into town bright and early, 10.15am, and got the BEST viewing spot -behind the barrier, directly across from the Town Hall entrance, BUT, had to LEAVE at 2.15pm for my job (can you believe that!) and, just to make it worse, the Queen apparently went up Manchester Road, straight past where I live, and I wasn't even there! So, hope others have some good "Queen" photographs.

Thanks for that Bob, I was born in '63 so had never heard the term until recently in that sense as it had obviously dropped out of use. Always thought playing was for children!:D
Still haven't seen many pics of HM in Accy -does no-one have any?

Bloomin' heck Atarah.

That's a great shame.

I know you were eager to take photographs, of this memorable day in Accrington's history.

Hopefully there'll be lots more posted here.

I must say, Accrington did look rather magnificant on the television's coverage.

We are lucky, having such fine buildings as the Town and Market Halls, and the rare bit of sunshine we experienced yesterday helped set them off beautifully.

Would it mean something like "Larking about" or perhaps "Malarking about" - that means messing about doesn't it?

One for the Old Local Expressions thread i think...

Looked on SKY yesterday but it wasn't mentioned or shown -shame. So the only pics I've seen are the ones on here - not being able to see the BBC on TV or the web:(

Nice green outfit though and the Town hall looked amazingly clean on the photos! Most of the local yokels were dressed down though as far as i can tell. No-one wearing hats either except Her Maj, I do like the chance to wear a hat:D Unless, of course, some of the local "VIP's" made an effort.

Di this young lady from the Lancs Telegraph posted some photos on twitter
Twitter
I agree a remarkable lack of dressing up on the part of the crowd but then people don't these days do they? I like the chance to wear a hat too but don't think I would do in that sort of crowd unless it were a woolly one to keep my ears warm!

Oh I don't know Mo, there doesn't seem to be as many "trackies" as you'd expect, looks like they made the effort & put jeans on. ;)

I didn't see her in Accrington, but went with work to the Turf to see her (much to my husbands discuss, he's a rovers supporter). Had a brilliant day, the atmosphere was amazing. But have found this regarding the Queen in Accrington on you tube, hope i have managed to put the link on correct.

I don't think any photos were taken inside the town hall, while not while the Queen was there anyway. Those in the town hall were specifically told no photographs.

I think there was about 21 Mayors there from various parts of the North West. Most of the photos of the Mayors were took in the council offices. That's were they got all robed up

Why were there no photos taken of the Queen in the Town Hall Bernard was it something to do with protocol?

I think protocol. There are a couple of photos of the Queen in the Town Hall, but most seem to have been taking outside, or in the market hall.

Here is a link to the photos on Flickr that are linked from the HBC website

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II - a set on Flickr

Re: The queens visit to accrington may 16th 2012

Well now on HBC website there are lots of photos of HM in the Town Hall meeting and greeting - but none of the ones I saw yesterday of the dignitaries chatting and drinking tea in what looked like a low-ceilinged back room.

These are not of Flickr either - those in the link Neil posted look more like stills from a video camera.
