Bites !

Anyone know any miracle cures for horse fly bites ?
Got 4 on my leg from yesterday and I react really badly to 'em ;my leg has swollen up nearly double ! have had anti-histamine,painkillers and put Eurax cream on,and zapped the bites with my electronic zapper thing. They look awful, weepy and red and my leg feels like it's gonna pop !

sounds like you have tried nearly everything. I always use witch hazel gel as it seems to take the redness out of bites..in fact use witch hazel for loads of stuff, sunburn, grazes, bites etc...

But sounds like your bites may be beyond that though..sorry and hope they get better soon :o

I'm allergic to mosquito bites and no matter what I put on them, the swelling doesn't go down for three days. You just have to wait I'm afraid.

Re: Bites !

If you can tolerate an oral anti-inflammatory......like Nurofen, it may help a little bit, but i think you just have to leave them alone(no scratching) and wait. If they look like they are infected get along to your GP and get some antibiotics.

lindsay ormerod 11-06-2007 20:09

Re: Bites !

Think they maybe infected ! The surrounding area of each bite has now come up really red ;about 3inch diameter around each one,and a white edge around the red ring ! Am toying with going to A & E but it means getting to Blackburn ! They have definately got worse in the last couple of hours!

Re: Bites !

It would be best to let a health professional have a look at them......phone NHS direct....they may direct you up to the emergency GP unit the Blackburn hospital.

A jaunty, prettily patterned scarf, tied decorously around the neck, can disguise, and draw attention away from, any unsightly love bites.:D

Re: Bites !

I've still got the scars from some nasty insect bites of about 3 years ago that I got in Carnforth. They went just as you describe Lindsay and I react dramatically to them too. We got some fantastic stuff when we were in Tunisia but apparently it's not available here as it doesn't meet with some regulations or other but whatever it was I wish it was available here because it works a treat, cooling, soothing, anti-inflamatory and antiseptic and everything else all in one. Have you asked advice from a local pharmacist?

lindsay ormerod 12-06-2007 12:41

Re: Bites !

My pharmacist at Boots took one look at the " Leg" this morning and packed me off to A&E ;it's now bandaged and iodine'd from ankle to thigh,I had to have a tetanus jab and a 7 day course of strong anti biotics. I have been told to go home and rest it,the Doctor drew lovely lines with a marker pen around the bite area and I have to go back tomorrow to see if it's improved ( ie that the infection hasn't sread over the lines !) and to get dressing changed !
All this caused by one lousy fly ! GRRRR.

Blumming heck Lindsay sounds bad, how did they know it was a fly? didnt think they were that bad:eek:

I had to have an emergency tetnus jab last summer after stratching my back on a rusty barb wire & came out with a big allergic reaction :( s not nice.

Hope u recover well soon.

Re: Bites !

Accymel,I know it was a horsefly 'cos I saw the little monster busy feasting on my leg! (shortly before I slapped it into the middle of next week) I have reacted badly to 'em in the past and this really takes the biscuit !

Re: Bites !

Good to hear you got some treatment Lindsay. Hope it starts to get better now.

Hope you get sorted out too Mez.

I am sure all my swollen limbs began with a bite years ago. I've never been the same since but no doctor has ever taken that seriously. I have blown up like a balloon recently.

Just been back to hospital for the doc to have another look;the infection isn't spreading thankfully but he's still not happy with a couple of the bites; re-dressed again and have to go back on friday. Can't go into work either.:(

Re: Bites !

Sorry clever clogs but I was nowhere near any horses and wouldn't be by choice anyway cos I hate the bleeding clumsy daft things !
Thought as a health care professional you would have a bit more sense than to poke fun at what could have turned out to be a serious injury; their bites can carry Lyme's disease, typhoid and various other nasties to horrid to contemplate.

Is your type of horsefly the one that looks like a housefly, but with distinctive markings on the wing? If you are allergic to those little bastards, prevention is much easier, and more effective than cure. There must be some sort of repellant you can get; "Off" makes a good one. I used to be really allergic to them, but the more I got bit, it seemed that I built up immunity. Exposing yourself to them, may not be a good idea, though. About as effective as exposing oneself to a copper. Wow, it seems like I have been absolutely no help whatsoever. Sorry.

Re: Bites !

I was biten by an horsefly last summer 3 times on my leg, it took weeks for them to heal, the scars are still visable, I was in my garden and nowhere near horses, what does repell them though is citronella oil used to use it when I were out riding and it worked a treat.

mallard 21-06-2007 20:30

Re: Bites !

Hello there it sound,s very bad and sore, why don,t you get some surgical spirit from the chemist and try that and see if it help,s i use it on cut,s and sore,s and it work,s very well.

lindsay ormerod 22-06-2007 18:40

Re: Bites !

It's all healed up and fine now thanks; but I have got scars ! Was told about citronella oil at work a couple of days back by a lady who reacts badly to bites and she said it works so it will be my next purchase and it's coming to Spain with me too just in case the mozzies fancy their chances!

WillowTheWhisp 23-06-2007 08:26

Re: Bites !

We use citronella when we're dining al fresco at the caravan - it pongs a bit though.

Re: Bites !

I am always getting bitten and have to avoid places like Greece and Cyprus as the bites swell up so much and get infected I usually end up in casualty :( I really suffered last summer in this country (horsefly bites are real nasty) and have been recommended Mosi-guard as a prevention rather than a cure.

Did go into Boots and Superdrug for this and noone had ever heard of it! Read about it in a magazine and its a herbal "recipe" which is better for you as it doesn't contain Deet which can be quite bad for you. I still haven't managed to get hold of it yet and am just using a Boots own insect repellent. So far so good...
