what livens you up?

when your down?
been really down for a few weeks now and the last week has really topped it off for me, a handful of you on here know why i'm feeling this way at the moment, what can i do?
i think ive got a self destruct button and am likely to press it at any moment

(the anti-depressants arent working anymore)

MargaretR 07-10-2007 17:59

Re: what livens you up?

Come off the anti depressants slowly - seek docs help to do this
It might cheer you up to know that after a short time on them, when I came off them, I was incredibly h**ny;) (for a short time:() - doesnt that give you something to look forward to?

Re: what livens you up?

Depression is awful (been there) - just think of better times ahead - they will come.
People who never have bad times do not appreciate good times when they come - I feel sorry for their life of monotony.
Intense despair will become intense joy - it is a natural restoration of balance.

flashy 07-10-2007 18:19

Re: what livens you up?

thanks for that Margaret, i just hope it comes real soon, i can be up one minute and down the next, its horrible, some people dont understand what its like and why i'm like this, trying to explain it is awful because i cant put it into words, all i say to them is .. i dont know why i'm like this, i cant explain it

Mr Aleks 07-10-2007 18:20

Re: what livens you up?

Maybe saying sorry after you have been "like this" with people would help.

Re: what livens you up?

When I get the blues I stay away from people. Having others try to help seems to make things worse ... it's like the depression feeds and grows stronger with well meaning help and advice ... So, what works for me (and this aint advice, it's an answer to the question "what livens me up?" ... pet therapy ... seriously ... hugging a cat, walking a dog. Works for me ... Cheer up hon ... The light at the end of the tunnel probably isn't a train.

Re: what livens you up?

Its a hard one Shaz cause I haven't been there I get a bit irritable about mid cycle and thats it really, dont stop the tablets without speaking with your GP if you feel tired on them maybe you need different ones, there are usually quite a few different ones all in the same classification but will have slightly different affects. Focus on whats good, take strength from the great job you do with Reece and when you feel like falling out with someone, say nowt, take 5 mins and rethink, hope your on the up soon:)

Re: what livens you up?

thanks you lot, your all stars

what you where saying about feeling down mid cycle Grego....i'm like that perminantly, i havent had a period for 2 1/2 years due to my pcos, the doctor says its not a hormone thing but my dad seems to think it is, some days i go next door and just cry on his shoulder, he knows exactly whats wrong with me when i do that and he usually cracks a joke and starts acting stupid to cheer me up...my doctor has put it down to my mum dying when i was 15, he thinks i havent come to terms with it yet and havent grieved properly...16 years on, i have so much going around in my head that it sometimes feels like its going to explode

flashy 07-10-2007 20:16

Re: what livens you up?

i'm not asking for pity, or anyone to feel sorry for me, i just need to sort my head out

grego 07-10-2007 20:20

Re: what livens you up?

I think some of it will be hormone related especially because of the pcos but maybe you would benefit by talking with someone professional about your Mums death, hope your feeling better soon.

Saying sorry and really bloody meaning it shaz is constructive. Its the best thing you can do but dont just say sorry. Tell the person WHY you are sorry. Im not being nasty but you need to say sorry first before anything.

Re: what livens you up?

You have my sympathy. I have never suffered from depression but have heard from people who have, how debilitating it can be. I am told that you can't just 'cheer up.' That would be like telling someone with a broken leg to run a marathon. Like somebody else on here said, maybe bereavement counselling would help you. Maybe you should ask your doctor to refer you. I really hope you start to feel better very soon.

harwood red 07-10-2007 22:18

Re: what livens you up?

I have been there flashy and it does get better...and due to the treatment I went through I can now recognise the signs and have learnt coping mechanisms so I don't decend into that pit and you will know the pit I am talking about.

One day at a time, but please don't just stop taking your medication:nono8:

ANNE 07-10-2007 23:03

Re: what livens you up?

Go to the health food shop and get some St johns wort flashy. But ONLY after you have come off the antidepressants. You CANT take both together.
Ask your Dr about getting some counseling, this may help but there is a long waiting list.
Visit some Internet sites about depression and find some self help measures.
An healthy diet, exercise, meditation.
At the end of the day it's down to you. Only you can stop yourself from falling down the black hole.
I often find that making a list of whats getting me down helps and start with amending the things you can do something about. if its a problem from the past, then remember what's done is done. You cant undo anything. take the good things and memories with you and move on.
Keeping a diary often helps just by the fact your writing things down and this helps remove the jumbled thoughts from your head.

WillowTheWhisp 08-10-2007 07:05

Re: what livens you up?

Recognising that it's happening is a start. You know the 'I know I'm going to shout/scream/cry/walk out of here/be an idiot but can't help it'. 'Can't help it' is the thing that other people don't understand and some will be determined not to even try. If they've never had first hand experience then it's difficult for them and all the 'helpful advice' in the world often is just the opposite when it doesn't help at all and just ends up making you feel guilty. I've got a tape somewhere called 'bounce back' which a well meaning friend once gave to me when I was suffering and after playing the first few minutes of it I could have cheerfully stuffed it down her throat! The only reason I didn't is because I knew she meant well.

I think it's so sad that counselling isn't more readily available because I don't believe that tablets are always the answer but people who don't suffer from depression often don't understand that it is a real illness and you can't just 'pull yourself together' or cheer up. It causes a chemical imbalance in the brain so I've been told and that is why the tablets help.

Now to answer the actual question, what makes me feel better - smelly stuff like Lush bath bombs, those massage bars with essential oils, aromatic candles, candlelight in general, soothing music, ice cream (ok not good for the diet but what the heck), walks in the fresh air, peace and quiet. Some people suggest reading a good book but it's not easy to concentrate on reading when you are down.

Re: what livens you up?

i'd give you all karma if i could

Mel...Fank Woo
Lilly...its exactly like that, i cant just snap out of it
Lesley...that pit is swallowing me at the moment and i need to find a way to get out of it
Anne...ive tried the st johns wort before, a few years back, it really wasnt for me, after being on it for a while it made me feel sick
Willow...i wish i had a mum like you

and Carl...please leave me alone

she was davastated,(we all were) but shes not as bad as she was, its been nearly 7 years, and even though she getting better, she still has her moments.
it does take time, and as they say... time is a great healer.

Music, try some music.....when you are angry the bang crash type stuff is good......when you feel sad some of the slushy stuff...does it matter if you weep buckets?
Hope you start to feel better soon and that the forthcoming course helps you a bit.

Find somewhere cosy, and escape into a good book.

Things are still the same when you've finished reading, but hopefully you'll feel more relaxed, and the time spent will have been worth it.:)

Re: what livens you up?

Marg i love listening to loud shouty music anyway, and your right it does do the world of good to scream at it, i usually go for guns n roses or the foo fighters

Gary cheers for that, i love reading books, although i am in need of a new one at the moment, i dont read fiction because my mind seems to wander when i read it, i like true life stuff like the kray twins, but ive read nearly all the books about them already, ive got about 50 autobiographies here that ive already read, think i'll be opening my own library soon :D

anyway today has been a better day, been out shopping with my mate, and he always makes me smile...ive decided to take some driving lessons soon, have just been talking about it with Richard, having something to focus on will help me i think

thanks again you lot xx
