How to keep a plastercast dry in the shower?

Has anyone got any tips on how to keep a plastercast dry in the shower/bath?

My son was pushed over at school on Monday and has broken both bones in his forearm and is in plaster from his hand to well above his elbow. We just got back from the hospital this afternoon, he had to go to theatre and have it snapped back into place

I'm going to try a bin bag and masking tape in the morning unless anyone else has any better suggestions!

Wrap it in cling film first. You can get special waterproof covers but they don't come cheap.

The bin bag was my method when my daughter broke her wrist

Bin bag and masking tape has always been my solution but take it well above the cast and make sure it's well sealed.

the bin bag is good but also try to keep arm upwards so that water runs away from the sealed part of bag

Poor thing was in agony, it happened about 3pm, the school first-aider gave him an ice pack and they let him walk home from school as normal without so much as a phone call to me! He couldn't even put his coat on or carry his bag, thankfully one of his friends walked him home.

Surely that is unacceptable. Have you spoken to the school?

Haven't really had the chance to speak to them, as I've been at the hospital since 3.45pm on Monday. I did send them an e-mail while I nipped home to pack an overnight bag for him to let them know he won't be in school and got the following reply this afternoon -

Thank you for your email. I have spoken to the staff who attended Daryl and have confirmed that Daryl's injury was the result of "horseplay" by another student. I have been informed by the first-aider who saw Daryl that she did not detect any signs that would indicate a fracture.

Obviously, I apologise on behalf of the student who caused the injury and I have excluded the individual and will arrange to meet his mother in the near future.

I have yet to speak to other members of staff who I believe may have been involved with the incident and will let you know if any further information comes to light.

Yours sincerely

B T Burke
Headteacher

He couldn't move his arm, was crying in pain, as soon as I saw it I knew it was broken, you could actually feel the bones protruding on the underside of his wrist! His form teacher rang me and left a message this morning asking how he was, I'll be speaking to them tomorrow after a good nights sleep and hope that I've calmed down a bit before then!

LOL - I have had to help him dress & undress, and promise not to look at his bits! He's gonna wear a pair of boxers in the shower!

Perhaps the first-aider needs to do a refresher course. Thanks goodness he had a friend to help him get home. Check if this was written up in the acident book or whatever they call it too because if it took place on school premises it should have been.

everything, even a scraped knee has to be written in the accident book, might be worth asking to see the comments.. they would have to cover all the other names tho for confidentiality...

Hope he feels better soon. I found that wrapping mine in cling film (which is bloody difficult when you've nobody to help), putting it into a plastic bag, with or without tape, was adequate.:)

Re: How to keep a plastercast dry in the shower?

I broke my leg doing something silly, and Jae swift laughed at me and all my friends and left me to walk home by myself because they didnt believe I had really hurt myself, even though I had busted my nose open with my other knee (yes I fell awkwardly).

I lived in accrington at the time, I was 13, and it was around 12pm when I broke my leg. It took me til 9pm that night to get home because I was too stubborn to ring an ambulance, and I didnt actually go til the day after because I was just so exhausted from the walk, bearing in mind I never actually got as far as accrington, a friends mum saw me near st marys school area and offered to give me a lift the rest of the way.

Anyway the point is, its lovely that your son has a friend who was willing to walk home with him and it'd probably be nice to reward him in some way for doing that. Obviously he wouldn't have had the same agony as walking home on a broken leg (lol) but he could've past out in the road or anything.

We only have a bath, no shower in our house, so it was quite simply for me to just hang my leg over the bath, was quite relaxing lol. Also, the school saying it was rough horseplay is to cover the students back and trying to prevent you suing him, and you wouldn't successfully sue him, but the school probably wouldnt look too favourable by failing to notice a fracture, and they should've at least alerted you.

We at Boots sell a protective bag type thing with a toggle on it ; looks pretty efficient to me and sells well. Go to the healthcare counter on back wall next to pharmacy !

Those things are great. Hubby had one when he was in plaster.

The bin bag, sellotape thing never worked. No matter how well you think you've taped it up it's never watertight and the water ends up coming through to the plaster.

I sent a card in for the boy to say thank you and put a cash reward in too. He popped round after school tonight to say thanks, I'm also going to ask that the school recognises him in some way that's if they ever return my call!

Thanks to Lindsay for the tip about waterproof covers in Boots, we got one today & only a fiver!
