Cold sores

What treatment is best for cold sores? I had some cheap cold sore cream but it didn't seem to do much, and the cold sore is right on the crease of my lip so it keeps cracking open again and it hurts :( i've resorted to TCP until I know of something more suitable.

Thankyou

Zovirax...or one of the creams that incorporates acyclovir(aciclovir - alternative spelling).

Yes obviously, although once you have the virus you always have it so it wouldn't make a different whether I had one or not surely?

Also there are two strains of the virus, and the one I have would have a low risk of spreading to my boyfriend in that way as the form of the virus down there is a different strain of it.

My friend has the worst strain of the virus. Disgusting

I'll have a look in asda later then, hopefully i'll find one that manages to clear it up.

My valentines day isn't going very well is it, i've got cold sore, my nasty rash (that clearly isn't thrush because its not clearing up with canestan)....

I give up lol

cold sores are herpes, one is herpes zoster and the other is herpes simplex, ive suffered from coldsores since i was about 4, you just have to be really careful

and believe me if you have one on your mouth i strongly suggest you dont go down on your man whilst you have it, i know someone who did that when they had a coldsore on there mouth and it ended up on her fella's manhood, so yes it does spread that way

Its rare to spread that way, most people dont get the strain of herpes thats most likely to do that, unless of course you have gone down on someone that already had the nasty strain of it.

My mates got the herps down his bits and its disgusting, thats what happens when you sleep with people that cant be careful though. He slept with a stripper, cant remember her name now, but I guess he deserves it. Never known anyone so stupid.

Also, I'm catholic, I dont DO sex. :D

Re: Cold sores

With respect to the herpes virus, you are right about them being different strains.....they are HSV 1 and HSV 2.......you are right also about them always being present in your system....however, you only pass them on when the virus is active......that is, when you have a cold sore.......and you can get HSV 1 below the belt so to speak, and HSV 2 above the belt.
In fact the cold sore that you get on your lip id more dangerous than the one you get in the lingerie dept, as the virus can retreat along nerve roots and cause herpetic encephalitis....you can also transfer the virus to your eyes....so careful handwashing is a must.

Re: Cold sores

Flashy, herpes Zoster is the virus that is responsible for Shingles, not cold sores.

there are two strains of simplex virus, which is what i thought flashy meant.

Ermmm no, I am not dirty enough to attempt to spread disease. I've had the cold sore for a week now. It hasn't spread to his face when he has insisted on a kiss, so I will resist going down on him.

Re: Cold sores

As I said in the previous post......you CAN get HSV 1 in the knicker Dept.....if you are up to naughtiness like that.......equally you can get HSV 2 on your lips,or face.......again if you are up to naughtiness of that ilk.

I don't need to know if you are right, I've spoken to the doctor about it before and been TOLD that its not likely to happen.

Margaret Pilkington 12-02-2008 13:43

Re: Cold sores

The other thing about cold sores is that they need to be treated when you first feel the 'tingle'......it is unlikely that Zovirax will shorten the course of the complaint if you have had it for so long......but be reassured your next cold sore won't hurt as much and will not last as long.

flashy 12-02-2008 13:43

Re: Cold sores

so if you've spoken to the doctor about it before then why do you need advice on which treatment to use?

Thankyou

best cure for cold sores is biting your lip and keeping your gob shut!

I am very surprised that a doctor gave you information like that.....it isn't true!

Re: Cold sores

A used teabag will take some of the discomfort away from the area.
We used to use this trick for patients with genital herpes....as well as systemic acyclovir....and copper sulphate washes.

Margaret Pilkington 12-02-2008 13:47

Re: Cold sores

If you have seen a doctor, I am surprised that he didn't prescribe Zovirax for you.
And you should have let him look at your other rash too, maybe he could have sorted out a better antifungal treatment......something like Diflucan orally.

blazey 12-02-2008 13:51

Re: Cold sores

I don't normally get cold sores this bad, and so i've normally just let them go away naturally. Hence why I'm asking for remedies.

I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow, who will be able to diagnose my rash and cold sore properly.

Flashy, whilst I understand that you may have had herpes in both places and been diagnosed yourself, I was told it is rare to spread from one type to another, not impossible, and you are obviously an unlucky person.

The problem with herpes 'down below' is that condoms wont always protect you against the infected area so you should be more inquisitive before you sleep with people or let them go down on you.

My boyfriend is at no risk though.

Re: Cold sores

try some perfume or aftershave, it has to be alchohol based, IT WILL STING but it will dry it up quickly, i used to have coldsores and my grandad used to put aftershave on them and they dried up in a day then put some vasaline or lip salve on to stop it cracking anymore because that hurts too

I'm not just surprised that a doctor told you that, I'm appalled!!!!!!!

Of course you can get both HSV1 and HSV2 in the downstairs dept.... One of the most common ways to catch it is by oral sex. I have seen loads of women who have caught it this way.

You can only get shingles if you have previously had chickenpox. After having chickenpox the virus lies dormant in the nerves, and shingles occurs when it is revitalised in one particular nerve to the skin.

it is nowt to so with coldsores, besides if ya did you would be in agony!

I'm thinking of my other rash, which yes I have had chicken pox and yes the rash did become agony.

Thankfully it wasn't, the nurse at uni was wrong about all her theories and I am now slowly on the mend :)
