right dont laugh but....i want to go back to work

at the moment i am on £96 a week income support for me and Reece, so i need a job that is going to pay me at least £150 a week (or £96 + working tax credits) i will have to pay some rent and council tax i know, does anyone know anything about how the working family tax credits work cos i havent a clue, the rent on my house at the moment is about £68 a week, i only want to be doing about 16 hours to start with and i dont know what sort of job i want...in the past i have only ever done care work (and a bit of waitressing)which i dont want to go back to, Reece is only 11 so i'd love to do something just in the hours that he is at school


anyone any suggestions?

Can't help with the financial queries Flashy .. but how about looking for something on school dinners .. sorta' waitress .. not quite though, and you could tell the punters off for being cheeky .. :D

The best way to work it out is pretend is go to Start Calculation and input the details as though you are getting at job at minimum wage ( which a lot of part time jobs are anyway ) 16 hours at £5.52 per hour. Bear in mind you have to work a minimum 16 hours to claim working tax credits.

My guess is you won't be any better off and would probably be better spending time at college and trying to gain some skills in different things.

thanx for that Dave :) i have an NVQ level 2 in care, was one of the first in Lancashire to get it at 17, but i dont want to go back to care work

Flashy, welfare assistants dont make enough money for it to be worth doing if you want to come off benefits. you would need another job at the same time.

Why not go down to the jobcentre and they should be able to help you sort stuff out and give you advice. Also tell you what kind of benefits you would be able to claim after you had got a job and also tell you what kind of college courses you could do etc. Might be able to help with retraining etc.

If you enter the wage you think you might get at this site, it will tell you what tax credits and housing benefit you would get as extras

right ive made my mind up on what i want to do....Nursing Auxiliary on maternity

its something ive always wanted to do and i applied a few times before i had Reece but never followed it through

i love children, you know what i'm like Mel, i'll look after any child of any age, hopefully my NVQ will help, yeah i know it was a long time ago that i did it and i may have to do some other courses, but hey this is the start of the rest of my life :D

As a nursing auxilairy in any of the services you would almost certainly be expected to do unsocial hours...this is evenings,weekends, bank holidays, days, nights or any combination of.
You would have to have some pretty rock solid care arrangements in place for your son to enable you to do this.
I don't want to burst your bubble, but the reality is, that such care is a round the clock thing.
