The Food Credit Crunch

can i be allowed to start a thread about special offers on food at markets and in supermarkets please? maybe we could tell each other if anything has gone down in price in certain places, lets face it, we all need to keep an eye on our money, especially with everything going up like it is doing

Iceburg lettuces...50p at tesco this week

I'll join this one Flashy

2ltr Cravendale is on roll back at Asda and is only £1 a bottle at the mo

flashy 05-06-2008 13:15

Re: The Food Credit Crunch

thats cheap considering how much milk has gone up recently, i was in tesco yesterday and i buy uht milk and that is 67p a litre at the moment, used to be somewhere around 50p a litre

lancsdave 05-06-2008 13:19

Re: The Food Credit Crunch

If you sup a lot of milk then the 6 pint bottles of semi skimmed at Asda are currently 2 for £3.

i buy 6 uht cartons of milk a week for me n Reece, its pointless buying fresh milk for the two of us in bulk because it would go off before we drank it....but thats dead cheap for a big family Dave

Re: The Food Credit Crunch

Even if you dont shop online you can compare prices at
http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/Home.aspx
You may be asked to register - no charge for it

You can enter the items you want to buy and it will compare prices for you at Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys and Avocado.

You wont be committed to complete the purchase until you get to the actual chosen supermarket's checkout page, so you can browse prices, and back out at any time.

Depending on what you are buying, it varies which supermarket is cheaper overall.
You can view special offers and bogoffs.

I go through about 10 ltrs of milk a week, but the cravendale has a longer shelf life than normal milk (i beleive that it is filtred more than normal milk so guess more of the bacteria etc is removed, but I may be wrong) Its last about 2 - 3 weeks i think when opened, never have had any open long enough to go off though lol

Tesco have a few items of fruit & veg on offer every week at the moment, as well as the lettuce i remember pineapples being a pound , it has been advertised in the paper all week. Make a list and stick to what you need, anything extra you see ask yourself `do you really need it........?`

I too buy Cravendale, it lasts 7 days once opened, but if unopened, the use by date on the bottle is about a month after it has been bought

Yes we get it to, with the little milk drinkers in ours we buy in bulk because it has great dates.

Re: The Food Credit Crunch

In the rush to dominate the food market, supermarkets have decimated the milk industry. Dairy farmers are struggling to make ends meet. Some claim to be getting less than it costs them to produce it and have to diversify to try and subsidise the product.

So I get my daily 2 pints of milk delivered by a local farm. Actually to aid in keeping the cost of delivery down, my milk lady only delivers on Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays. And she collects payment once every five weeks. But I can handle that OK.

Even though it has recently been increased to 50p a pint I will continue to support the local farmer, for two reasons. It helps to keep the milk industry alive and you still get real milk, albeit bereft of a decent amount of cream. Sadly you cannot buy ‘green top’ anymore.

OK just had my online shopping delivered (bloody chickenpox, cant wait til he's got rid of the lurgi) and we have the following offers:

Tea/Coffee 2 for £4 (200g coffee)
Cooked meats (3 for £3) (200g wafer thin meats)
Cereal 2 for £2 (asda 350g boxes)
Prepared salad 2for£1
Clover 2 for £2
Hovis bread 2 for £2
Warburtons fruit loaf 2 for £1.50
Bernard Mathew Chicken breast 2 for £2 should have been £5

So now you all know whats on my shopping list lol

Actually seems quite good this time, got about 15 bags worth of shopping for 70 quid so either my spending habits have changed or Asda have sent me a sympathy 'cant get out the house' thing, like red cross sent the prisoners of war.

ok bad simile, am very bored.....going now

You can freeze lots of stuff that you wouldn't think of freezing. When my sisters hubby was in the army they were quite a way from the shops and she used to buy milk and freeze it. I have also boght cheese when it was on special offer and put it in the freezer:alright:

i save a lot of money by freezing stuff, we dont use a lot of bread in our house, i only buy 1 loaf a week cos we hardly eat it, i keep the bread in the freezer and take out a couple of slices when we need it, it saves it going green before we've used it all :D

thanx for the karma Nicki :D

How about adding the cost of actually cooking the food costs to here? I make two dinners at a time to save fuel. ie. one chilli and one shepherds pie.Cook the mince and onions together then split the mix into two and carry on with other ingredients. Cook both in the oven, saves fuel again. Have one dinner today and fridge the second to be heated in micro next day.Roast one day and casserole cooking at the same time ?

Re: The Food Credit Crunch

I have a small paperback book called 'Will it Freeze?'
It is a valuable source of info when avoiding food waste

You might not know that bananas should be kept away from other fruit because as they ripen they emit a gas which causes other fruit to ripen faster, and, rather than throw away overripe bananas, you can freeze them pureed for future use in smoothies and cakes.

Overipe tomatoes can also be pureed and frozen for use in sauces and soups

PS - dont throw away limp lettuce -make soup

emamum 25-06-2008 08:31

Re: The Food Credit Crunch

i freeze milk cos i dont have a fridge.... if you freeze butter defrost it in the fridge cos it seperates if you dont...

anyone like smoothies? its not a special offer really but you can get tropical smoothie mix (bag of frozen fruit lol) for 39p at farmfoods and they are selling 2 cartons of fresh orange for £1.... one bag (mixed with orange) made a pint and a half of really nice smoothie :D

Also if ya freeze ya milk make sure ya take a cupfull out beforehand, because it expands when freezing:D, oh and check it aint got any cracks in the bottle before ya defrost too otherwise ya will get it all over:eek:
If it has ruptured it's better not to use the milk.
defrost in the fridge too;)

Pet food from supermarkets has been an expensive item for me, but today I found this site-
Pet Supplies, Pet Food, Pet Accessories at zooplus
If you order over £29 worth you get free delivery, and a discount on first order.
Most well known brands are stocked - if you have space to store it - well worth the outlay on getting in several weeks supply.
