Asthma and colds

i'm full of a cold at the moment and it's laying really heavily on my chest, i've had 2 asthma attacks in the last 2 days and it's doing my head in, taken my preventer as usual and my reliever but nothing is working (i'm not that bad that i need to go to hospital) just finding it really hard to breathe, tried olbas oil and menthol crystals too but nothing seems to be helping......i was wondering if our resident asthma sufferers have any hints on how to ease it :D

only got out of bed once today and that was to put the chicken in the oven, and do the veg, came back to bed cos i was completely exhausted, sitting upright relieves the symptoms somewhat but i have to sit in a quiet room just to concentrate on my breathing....or i forget to breathe (yeah i know that sounds daft but thats how it goes)

Flashy, you need to see your doctor. It maybe that the cold has caused a secondary chest infection and antibiotics may be required.
In the interim try inhaling steam.......to do this biol some water and put just an inch or so of water into the bottom of a plastic jug......put you moth and nose over the opening of the jug....the spout is an ideal place to put you nose....breathe in and out normally until there is no steam left.
Yes it will make you cough, but the steam will help to liquify the mucus making it easier to bring up.
Do this every couple of hours.
I am sorry to read that you are not well, I hope you feel better soon....but do see your Doc or at least the specialist nurse at the practice.

Sorry to hear that you are feeling grim. I have read that this summer will be a bad year for asthma and hay fever sufferers because the late spring has meant that many more irritants have been released by plants at the same time, whereas they normally release over a span of weeks.

I do not contradict the sound advice that MargaretP has given.
What I can add is info about some alternative therapy which may help to prevent frequency of attacks in the future.

I do have some breathing problems too, and have been searching for some improvement which doesn't involve pharmacuticals.

Salt Therapy for Treatment of Asthma, Sinusitis, Hayfever, Ear Infection and More::Natural Treatments, Drug Free Treatments::Salt Cave London, United Kingdom
extract-
2. Negative ionized tiny salt particles get into the respiratory system; they can even reach the deepest part of the lung (alveoli).

3. Based on clinical studies, the inhaled dry saline aerosol reducing inflammation in the whole respiratory tract, absorbing edema from the mucosa lining the airway passages leading to widening of the airway passages, restoring the normal transport of mucus and unclog blockages in the bronchi and bronchioles leading to rapid elimination of the residual tar and foreign allergens

4. Patients feel their respiratory system clean again. It can improve the quality of patients’ life, reducing the antibiotics and corticoids or steroids intake, reducing the rate of annual hospitalizations and decrease the frequency of asthma attacks.

The way to get salt therapy at home is to use a saltpipe inhaler
The Original SaltPipe: Information about salt pipe, dry salt inhaler
Salt Pipe- salt pipe helps asthma, salt pipe for better breathing

I bought one last week, so I haven't used it long enough to report whether it works.
It never needs a refill,- at that price it had better not do!

To supplement that I have bought a Himalayan salt lamp, which works like an ionizer, and also puts fine salt particles in the air.
Salt lamps Rock Salt lamp Himalayan Crystal Salt for health wellbeing

The salt used is NOT at all like table salt - it has trace minerals which you body needs to function. To learn more about salt -

Hope you are better soon

I would agree with what MargaretR has posted...my measures are for immediate use...until you can sort something else out.
I am in favour of alternative therapies too.....but it needs to be something that you decide for yourself.

Cashy, try the treatment I have outlined for Flashy...it certainly won't do you any harm and it may make you feel better as it can alleviate the congestion.
Get better soon, both of you.

The therapy I have detailed will not conflict with any meds the doc has given you - it can supplement them

Re: Asthma and colds

I had a 'gasping for breath' session yesterday.
I went with my son and family to see a house that they are about to buy (hopefully).
To present it better for viewing, the owner was using the dreaded chemical air fresheners.
It wasn't quite as bad as the Yankee candle episode at Ossy Mills, but I was embarrassed by having to sit outside on the patio to get my breath back.

Inhaled irritants differ for we 'different people' - but the effects are similar - nasty

the steam thing made me smile and reminded me of my late mum, she used to have me with my head over the bathroom sink with a towel over my head inhaling the steam as she ran a sink full of steaming hot water

Re: Asthma and colds

Yes Flashy, except with my method all of the steam goes to your breathing passages and loosens the rubbish that is causing the problem......making it easier to cough those little green devils up....and it is drug free, and doesn't cost much.
Hope you feel better soon.

i was in 'Lush' in Manchester with my little nephew on Tuesday trying to find a little something to take back for his mum, Cam picked up a huge bath bomb and made me smell it, it went that far up my nose i could taste it and was sneezing for ages afterwards, with my chest i don't often buy aerosol products, i do buy Impulse though, thats mainly to spray on smelly people if i'm on a bus and they stink, can't be doing with that Shake'n'vac stuff, i only use roll on deodorants too, having had asthma since i was a tiny child i've had to learn what to avoid...it's a bit of an arse really, sweeping the stairs sets me off (maybe thats why i've been like this, swept the stairs on Thursday) Reece usually does it for me but he was poorly so i did it

ok waffle over with

I would certainly contact your doctor shaz, and if your breathing gets worse don't mess about ring three nines. When I start with a cold it usually ends up in a chest infection, but as part of my ongoing treatment I always carry a stand by dose of wide spec antibiotics, and I increase my steroids. Its also advisable to keep a check on your temperature, which could indicate an infection
