Re: Nuisance telephone calls.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I wanted to warn folk on here about something.

I had a call last week from 'Me' Magazine, saying that a survey I filled in recently had meant I entered into a prize draw, and I had won a day at a health spa as well as various vouchers. I apparently was to be sent a free magazine which also contained some vouchers, and an information pack telling me where to book my spa day etc.
Alll I had to do was, surprise surprise-pay £1 for the postage and packing for this stuff, and for this they needed by debit card details.
I was suspicious, and asked them to email me with the details ("No no Miss we can't do that") or send me a confirmation in writing-again, (heavy foreign accent of some sort "No no Miss we can't do that") and in the end I told them to b0g off an put the phone down.
BUT, I didn't tell him this immediately. I was intrigued by it and the only reason I didn't go for it, is because I'm cute. I can TOTALLY see why somebody else would do.
What made me think it may be genuine, is this chap gave me a word that he said confirmed their genuineness, a password that I had used when filling in the survey. It WAS a password I have used in the past, quite often. No idea where he had that from.
When I put the 'phone down I searched the 'net and found this ,
BEWARE 'ME MAGAZINE' SCAM!!! - Your say! - Made For Mums
& I am 99.9% sure that this 'Me Magazine' company, is where the call was from.
I've no idea how they manage to get away with scamming people in this day and age but just wanted to let people know just in case you're next on their dialler! :)

I've just received a test saying that there is £1,900 PPI waitng for me to claim, exactly the same amount wason a text sent to my wife's phone

Re: Nuisance telephone calls.

I received a text message before stating that I could claim up to £4000 for my injuries in the car accident I had. Funny enough I don't recall any car accident. Must be amnesia

Those PPI companies use aggressive marketing to get people to claim. They aren't always scams. Just attempts to use you to try and make claim, whether or not you had PPI from anywhere.

I worked in a department for a short while that deals with claim letters from companies that try for the PPI claims. Since all the TVads etc and all the different PPI/Claims/solicitors forming the department is inundated every day with 100's of these letters from over 60 different claim companies. One PPI claim company I know of doesn't do a thorough investigation when the customer asks if they can claim. They must just say, yeah sure and apply anyway. At least 80 out of 100 letters that I sorted through never had PPI on their account. A lot of these companies aren't even registered with the ministry of justice.

Lol
I did have PPI for about 6 months before I realised (before the whole trend began) that it was probably not worth it and I stopped it. I claimed the monies back myself by just writing to Barclays. I still get all these PPI calls though.

If you think you might have some PPI owing to you just go on the Which Wed Site, they have template forms for you to fill in, heard only yesterday that 700 firms last year had their licences removed for wrong doings with PPI claims

I keep getting calls on my landline phone from an international number telling me I am eligible for a grant for cavity wall insulation, in fact I had one a few minutes ago - they obviously are working from a script and don't know what to say when I tell them I'm not interested. The Asian sounding man I just spoke to said he would take me off their list, but I don't believe him! I have the caller preferencing service but they still get through.

Quite a few of my Asian callers tell me they have English names, so I tell them my name is Abdul. I think I am doing my bit for international relations.

We got a call tonight about insulation. My wife answered the phone and was asked if they were speaking to the house owner. My wife replied " no you are talking to the dog" to which they promptly rang off.

Preference service doesn't work on foreign calls Anne that's why they use them, if you get another just say oh goody goody your doing council houses now, the phone soon goes dead;)

I used to automatically give a hostile response and hang up to any caller with an asian accent.

However there have been two genuine callers in recent months who had such an accent, so I now use a first response of 'who is calling please?' before I decide whether to engage them in conversation.

I pick the phone up....let them say 'hello' a few times, while I say absolutely nothing.......after 4 'Hello's'(that's my current maximum score) there is a click and they are gone.

I received a call today from an Asian lady, who told me there was no need to worry, she was not trying to sell me anything, it was just a survey for a consumer group. I tend not to answer the landline during the day and early evening. Most people I would want to speak to have my mobile number and it is easier to screen calls with anyway. We don't have the caller ID facility on the landline cos we're not with BT.

My latest tactic is to speak to the cold caller in a cheery, gay voice, saying I would be delighted to answer their marketing questions. I do say that I charge for the service, and once I have received and cashed their cheque for £20 I will give them 5 minutes of my time. Strangely, they decline my offer.

there is also a website called WHO CALLS ME where you enter the nuisance number if you have one and read cases of other people if enough people complain they take it up. We went through a phase of these calls if the company is offshore no action can be taken against these nuisances

There are a lot of those sites - a spam number might have been entered into other ones than whocallsme. It's easier just to google the number and see if the page summaries from all the sites give any indication of the call's origin.

Its a waste of time Michael, they never could stop calls from outside Britain anyway, in fact I'm disappointed if I don't get a call every day, I work on weird and wonderful ways to take the pee out of um, only this morning a guy rang and ask to speak to the person who paid the account for the satellite insurance, I just said NO, he had no reply and hung up:D

Your a lucky sod, I hardly ever get any calls like that, the last funny caller rang me some weeks ago, sounded like India, I just said speak a bit slower and in Enlish, they finished up nearly spelling the words, till I just said, still can't understand you and hung up.

Re: Nuisance telephone calls.

A few days ago I got a marketing call -"about the minor road accident you had...."
I said P...off and slammed the phone down.

I thought I had better check with the Telephone Preference Service that my number was still registered.
When googling I happened to land here first
Telephone Preference Service | Stop Cold Callers Flouting TPS » OptOut

I made the mistake of entering my number there and have had two 'call back' calls - both which roused me from daytime naps and both which I failed to reach the phone on time. (still a long walk - see other thread)

I did a 1471 to find the number and then realised that it was this very site that I had looked at when I was investigating stopping nuisance calls.

I have sent them a mail requesting they stop calling
- that's ironic, don't you think?;)

Incredible!!! - this company who allegedly exist to prevent nuisance phone calls have continued to make them to me:eek:

I have been roused from sleep every day for the past 5 days and the call ended before I reached the phone.

I have sent them yet another email, more strongly worded this time. I did not request 'call back' when I entered my number on their site.

If they don't stop I will report them to the (real) Telephone Preference Service:mad:

Unfortunately we can all fall victim of these leeches, even on seemingly innocent sites on the web, we rush through the agreement only to discover that a variety of messages wanting us to back up our computers, allow someone to monitor our googlies appear and it's hard to remove them.
Ask on google about methods to remove, there is always some prat that says, stop looking at porn.

Yeah right, as if I could stop looking at porn!

I had a cold caller tonight ... thinking about it I was wondering whether mobertal had managed to find my landline number from somewhere ... why ... because the cold caller was proud to tell me that she was ringing from san Lorenzo in Italy and she was representing a company that was now coming to England .... when I gave her the benefit of the doubt ...and said in this country we have something called the telephone preference service which if you don't want cold callers you register with and this phone number is registered with them ... she said well why didn't you tell me when you answered the phone ... well maybe if she gave me the chance to then I would have done ... and she hung up then ....
