Neon Socks
Today a customer was looking for table linen in a bright pink, explained we had dyed up cloth in Neon colours .. now most people would understand immediately (they glow under ultra-violet). Hard to describe colours over the phone, but think I am reasonable at this after 30+ years in the industry.
Well, ya' know like the colour of Teddy Boys socks in the 50's? Seeing as he was only 47, didn't get it. Bet some of you lot do ... :D |
Re: Neon Socks
I get it and I'm not 47 yet. Would have thought most people would understand that.
|
Re: Neon Socks

|
Re: Neon Socks

Re: Neon Socks
not sure if there is a difference between Neon and day-glo colours but both should be left to teenagers, and definetly no one with 47 year old skin or teeth should be anywhere near UV light unless its for medical reasons

Re: Neon Socks
Teddy boys' socks didn't need ultra-violet lights - they glowed on their own. They were essential on dark nights as you couldn't hear teds approaching, with their thick crepe-soled shoes on, so the strip of sock showing at the bottom of the drainpipe trousers acted as a warning light to prevent collisions and the possible entanglement of beehive hairdos in Bryllcremed quiffs.

Re: Neon Socks
Weren't they called fluorescent socks? They came in lime green, yellow, pink and orange.
You certainly didn't need ulraviolet lights to see them peeping from between the drainpipe trousers and the brothel creepers. |
Re: Neon Socks
oh those socks,,,,,,,,,,,,,,fantastic...

Re: Neon Socks
When Direct DJ was christened his God Father attended the church in his Teddy boy gear.

Re: Neon Socks
At the same time as the socks,, us girls had white plastic jackets,,
Me and my best friend Frances decided they were a bit grubby so we sponged them down with washing up liquid ,all was fine until it rained ,and we were both covered in froth ...:o |

The same thing often happened to Teddy Boys who used soap to keep the curls in the front of their Tony Curtis hairdos. :D |
Re: Neon Socks
I had shocking pink, lime green, and neon orange and full circle skirts in the same colours with giant musical note embroidered on them. My dad hated them he used to say," don't think you are leaving this house looking like that!"
so I would hide them in the shed and change where he couldnt see |
Re: Neon Socks
I know this is nothing to do with day-glo/neon socks....but it is on similar lines.
My mother tells a tale of going to a dance during wartime and being unable to get any stockings....so she used Burdalls Gravy browning to colour her legs....at the end of the evening she was cahsed home by a pack of dogs trying to lick the gravy browning off her legs....she swears that this story is true. |

Re: Neon Socks
There was a product on the market called Legtan and girls used it during the war when they couldn't get stockings. I'm told it used to make a helluva mess of the bed-sheets if it wasn't washed off - and, no, I don't remember it, I'm not that old.

Females in particular suffered from the lack of fashionable clothing. Silk and Nylon stockings were much sought after -- but were almost impossible to obtain for silk and nylon production was dedicated to the War effort -- mostly for Barrage Balloons and Aircraft Parachutes. Girls used to apply watered down gravy colouring, weak tea or commercial concoctions to their legs and draw "seams" down the back using eyebrow pencils to simulate stockings. I had forgotten about Legtan -- I shall add this to my Web site. I used to get pressed into service by one of my cousins to draw the "seams" when no one else was available (it was awkward to do by yourself) -- not bad duty, that! James |

Re: Neon Socks
neon socks made a comeback in the late 80s early 90s
along with neon cycling shorts and shell suits |
Re: Neon Socks
The brightly coloured sock "thing" for boys actually started right after the war in the late 1940s. The big deal was to have brown crepe soled suede shoes with yellow shoe laces and yellow socks.
Dennis Slater and I went on holiday to Douglas, Isle of Man, in 1947 -- we returned home to Burnley oufitted as above. My Mum and Dad "freaked out" -- as did our neighbors -- especially the retired Coldstream Guards Sergeant Major who lived across the street! We were a hit with girls, though -- we thought we were really something -- the trendsetters of Burnley! James |

Re: Neon Socks
 Neon socks eh! I liked the orange ones. I got them to match the lining in the jacket of my italian suit: three button, houndstooth check, went for about fifteen quid, I think, at Burton's. Those socks sure as hell made your feet stink. And the winklepickers!!!
